I hope we get an early projection from HITS tomorrow. In the meantime, they posted this:
Friday, October 27, 2023
The music world is once again abuzz with the release today (10/27) of Taylor Swift’s fourth album re-record for Republic, 1989 (Taylor's Version), which includes five previously unreleased vault tracks produced by longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff. Kendrick Lamar (pictured with Tay) has even re-recorded his verse from the remix of “Bad Blood” for the deluxe edition, a turn of events Swift described as “surreal and bewildering” in a social media post.
The original 1989 was released in 10/27/14 (yes, exactly nine years ago) and was produced and written with Max Martin. It won both Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2016 Grammys.
The vault cuts begin with the oddly punctuated “’Slut!’,” on which Swift opines, “If they call me a ‘slut!’ / You know it might be worth it for once” atop a sensual, synth-y instrumental bed. “Say Don’t Go” is a heretofore unknown collaboration with songwriter extraordinaire Diane Warren that deftly balances a ballad feel in the verses with a more propulsive chorus, while “Now That We Don’t Talk” is another Taylor top-shelf kiss-off (“I don’t have to pretend I like acid rock / or that I’d like to be on a mega yacht / with important men who speak important thoughts”) enrobed by sleek pop production.
“Suburban Legends” imagines returning to a class reunion with a man who is “so magnetic it was almost obnoxious,” and on “Is It Over Now?,” Swift calls out a paramour for a romantic indiscretion or two while also taking blame for her own.
1989 is available in umpteen formats sure to be snapped up by Swifties worldwide, including four different colors of vinyl and Target-exclusive editions on CD and LP. Boosted by the box-office-busting numbers for her The Eras Tour film, the new 1989 should easily equal if not surpass the 500k+ opening week vinyl totals for the last two re-records of Speak Now and Red. Swift’s most recent new studio album, Midnights, debuted with an astonishing 1.57m units in late October 2022. Could her latest Version top that?

For the sake of reference, Midnights ended up with 419k SEAs from 549.26 on-demand million weekly streams and 1.140 million pure sales, which means it that 1989 TV would probably need very close to 1.3 million pure sales to have a great chance surpass Midnights' first week equivalent albums (the actual number reported was 1.578 million).
I would expect Billboard to post almost daily update about 1989 TV's cumulative numbers as it with Midnights if it ends up having a chance to actually surpass the latter's first week numbers.

“After one day of sales and streams, we can project a first week total of 1.45-1.55m. This includes over 400m projected streams for an SEA of 300-350k. 1989 (TV) will become Swfit's sixth album to debut north of 1m. The original 1989 opened with 1.29m in 2014. Swift’s last album to open over 1m was 2022’s Midnights, which debuted with 1.59m.” m.hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=338202&title=SWIFTS-LATEST-VERSION:-GIGANTIC-OR-MASSIVE

Those early numbers suggest pure sales in the 1.15-1.2 million range.

Woah… 1.5m range is insane.
I know she still has to re-record her debut, but this has to be the most successful of all the ‘Taylor’s Versions’ and it’s no surprise. 1989 is a defining album… not only one of hers, but one of that decade. This was her true venture into pop and many of these songs still resonate on the radio everywhere. True landmark.

I hope when they announce Reputation (TV) she releases the pre-orders and immediately releases Getaway Car (TV) as a single with MV so it can have a 2 month chart run while the pre-orders are happening. Then upon release a Vault single gets released as a single. That’s the way I wish all of these re-recordings played out. Give an old album gem a chance at single-status and give a vault song a chance at single-status too.

Does BB still do the articles where they list the artist's album pure sales? If so, Ima need them to do that real soon so I can see all of taylor's actual sales (and lowkey wishing that BMR will toss some money out for some updated album certifications lol).

1.5 million sounds unrealistic considering Drake has top 2 on AM right now. The streams will not acccumulate more than 300k in sales. But it's Taylor so we'll never know.

Is it wise of Taylor to release 1989 now and hold off arguably the two least popular of her albums as the final two TV releases? Taylor has been making ALMOST flawless marketing decisions throughout her career, but I think I would have held off 1989 TV for the final TV release to finish off the project with a bang.

Apple Music hasn't combined 1989 TV and 1989 TV Deluxe yet which is hurting her chart placements. Sl*t! is at both #3 and #67 with the different. Same for other tracks. Once the versions are combined her placements should improve. 1989 TV is doing about part with midnights on apple music for day two despite drake being greater competition compared to those during midnight.

I think so - she’s at the peak of her fame (maybe, that’s been said like 5 times already about her lmao), and she’s doing 1M pure with an album everyone already bought 9 years ago, outselling the original week one. The other two are still inevitably gonna get a week at number one on the Billboard 200 whenever she releases them but she’s able to maximize her success right now with 1989

Genuine question. This is going to come across as hating, and that's not my intention. It's been super cool to see the success that Taylor Swift has had, even though I'm not the biggest fan of her music personally.
Why are the "Taylor's Versions" counting as separate albums? Shouldn't she only have 9 #1 albums? (Still fantastic!) I understand they're re-recorded versions but it does feel...off.

I believe Billboard said they would count separately because they're completely new recordings. Edit: I agree that it does seem like double dipping, but who else but Taylor would even be able to get a re-recorded album to debut at #1, let alone four times so far?

It would actually be better for Taylor's statistics if the albums were combined chart wise. Without the rerecording, 1989 was likely going to become the top female album of all time on billboard but it's run will now be cut short. Red and Fearless were also albums high on the all time chart that no longer chart because of the Taylor's version. Taylor's not the first artist to rerecord music and Billboard have always counted it seperately.

Hey, for any other artist in any other era of time, re-recording an album would seem like a terrible career move... and yet, only Taylor can pull this off in triumphant fashion.

Well... technically, only the Blue album and 1 were chart-topping hits packages for them. Anthology is a bunch outtakes, rarities, alternates...

Do we know what Taylor’s 1st week numbers are excluding pre-orders. ? Well, this first day Billboard article for 1989 TV only mentioned over 250k SPS compared to Midnights' 800k. So either Billboard did not count preorders for the former or those simply don't exist. I didn't get a chance to look a TS' webstore to see if she had them there, but I assume for other places selling vinyl versions they probably had them.

Maybe they haven't been reported yet to luminate.
