βOf 748m total units U.S. YTD, Taylor Swift has 14.7m, including 1.5m for the first week of 1989 (Taylorβs Version), which amounts to a 2% overall marketshare. For perspective, Morgan Wallen and Drake are at 1% and 0.9%, respectively. Global marketshare is valued by the investment community at roughly $1 billion per percentage point.
Weβve spilled plenty of ink detailing what a force of nature Taylor is and how her domination of the marketplace from every conceivable angle is next-level. But she just seems to get bigger, and to rule every area she entersβ
Swifties call her the music industry, it is actually true at this point lol

I'm not a Swiftie and I'm sorry but I do feel the re-release strategy has been a bit much and may end up doing more harm than good. I get that she's trying to make a point but with how successful they've been, it would be silly to deny that this is going to have long-term effects on the music industry. We're already seeing it with movies and television; rather than release new stuff, production companies are rebranding and relaunching older shows. Will we see artists like Adele, Eminem, Timberlake, Mariah, Britney, etc. start to simply re-record and re-release old albums instead of releasing new ones? At what point will artists just stop releasing new music and rely solely on touring and their back catalogs with the occasional re-release, since that's where most of the money is made for them anyway?

I think many would agree with your point if she wasn't also still releasing new albums and unreleased tracks.
It's very likely that by end of 2024, she'll have released 11 original albums and 6 re-releases (which would include ~30 new "vault" tracks in total).
All that in under 20 years of working professionally. That's quite a bit more prolific than the other artists you mentioned (with MC being the exception).

Idk. I feel like labels have been taking the easy/lazy route in recent years with developing artists that new music is just lacking unless youβre lucky enough to come across an artist that isnβt making hits because they donβt scratch the TikTok itch. Artists have been relying on re-releases and anniversary editions now for a couple years and seemingly are working in their favour. Until new music can simply be better than a quick fix for a 2:30 tiktok song, music buyers will continue relying on older music and re-releases for music worth their time.
