I understand the complain about double dipping because it's the same album twice reaching #1 but I also find it hilarious because I'm certain Taylor Swift is the only act right now that could send covers of her own material to the top again, let alone outselling the original.

^Technically, those would need to actually have shipped to actually count toward the Billboard 200.

RE: double dipping
Re-recordings are always new entries. One big reason is they are often recorded and released on a different label than the original. Up until now, they've usually been collections of re-recorded hits, not recreations of studio albums, but the same rule applies.
Back in 1990, the Righteous Brothers "Unchained Melody" (original recording) re-entered and peaked in the Hot 100's top 20 as a single from 'Ghost' - and right alongside it was a newly recorded version released on Curb Records. It also peaked in the top 20, albeit a little lower, at the same time. Their voices were noticeably aged and different from the 1960s original, obviously, but the original single was only available in a limited run. People bought the re-recorded single, and many mostly likely were unaware it wasn't the original. The wording on the single's cover art was a little misleading, probably intentionally.
Taylor's are very clearly new recordings, and like others have said, not many artists have that kind of pull to chart a re-recorded album at all, let alone is such massive quantities. Hats off.

I forgot to mention *with a re-recording* The biggest artists today (Drake, Bad Bunny, Beyonce, Billie, Olivia) arenโt even sniffing 1 million debuts and Taylor is casually doing it with a re-release. Not even the behemoth Adele could break a million with her last release.

That situation with "Unchained Melody" was so bizarre. The original recording, which was huge on radio after 'Ghost', was only re-released as a 7" vinyl single (which wasn't a huge-selling format in 1990). The re-recording, which radio wasn't interested in, was released on the more popular cassette single format. The original version reached #3 on the airplay chart with no sales and the new recording reached #4 on sales with no airplay. Without that split the song likely would have outpaced its original #4 peak. As it is those Hot 100 peaks (#13 for the original and #19 for the re-recording) don't really reflect just how popular that song was in the fall of 1990.

In the last month sheโs had a number one album, two number one singles, and a number one box office smash. I wish she would have released an autobiography or a book of poetry just to really change the game ๐

1.5 million sounds unrealistic considering Drake has top 2 on AM right now. The streams will not acccumulate more than 300k in sales. But it's Taylor so we'll never know. For what is worth, her streams on AM are split between the normal version and the later released deluxe version. Drake might even still have the #1 spot on AM given heโs so stronk there, but at least we know her streams arenโt combined.

Of 748m total units U.S. YTD, Taylor Swift has 14.7m, including 1.5m for the first week of 1989 (Taylorโs Version), which amounts to a 2% overall marketshare. For perspective, Morgan Wallen and Drake are at 1% and 0.9%, respectively. Global marketshare is valued by the investment community at roughly $1 billion per percentage point.
Weโve spilled plenty of ink detailing what a force of nature Taylor is and how her domination of the marketplace from every conceivable angle is next-level. But she just seems to get bigger, and to rule every area she entersโthe rerecorded albums, the massive tour, the blockbuster movie of the tour, the NFL games where her mere presence changes the center of gravity (even if the Chiefs have gotten off to a less-than-spectacular start to their season at 6 and 2). Thereโs been some conversation that a live album from Tayโs Eras Tour could be next to be announced, perhaps around the time of the 2/4 Grammys telecast, which she is also expected to rule. Will Travis Kelce be attending, or will he be preparing to defend his Super Bowl championship in Las Vegas?
In any event, now comes her biggest rerecording yet, along with a fresh avalanche of merch. What will she sell us next? And while weโve just had news of her net worth hitting $1b, what is the valuation of Taylor Swift Enterprises? How many billions is she really worth, at a multiple of, say, 15-20 times earnings?

1989 TV first week SPS projected by HITS would have Midnights Billboard 200 first week equivalent albums by about 9k, with about 140k more pure sales but 119k less SEAs and 13k less TEAs. We'll see how it actually pans out.

According to our final projection, with 1989 (Taylorโs Version), Republic force of nature Taylor Swift lands the biggest first week of 2023.
Swiftโs rerecording of her 2015 Grammy Album of the Year opens with 1.58m units on the HITS Top 50. Vinyl sales account for 600k of that total, breaking the record for sales of vinyl in a single week (again) while posting 300k in SEA.
Our chart gerbil advises us that there is a +/- variance of 1% in this projection, but if it holds, the new release edges past Swiftโs previous set, 2022โs Midnights, which logged what was previously the biggest debut of her career. 1989 (TV) also surpassed the 2014 opening of the original album, which premiered with 1.29m units.
The "new" set amassed nearly 400m streams its first week. On 10/27, the album earned the most global Spotify streams in a single day in 2023 (so far); the megastar also earned the most total artist streams in a single day on the platform.
The rerecording also becomes 2023's 18th album to cross 1m units in total activity. Swift has six of those titles, including the original 1989. Since 2010, six of the eight albums to open with activity north of 1m units in their first week belong to Tay.
We note that she has three albums in the current Top 10, with Midnights at #7 and Lover at #9. Proving that other acts exist in the universe, PLEDIS/Geffenโs SEVENTEEN scores a #2 debut with SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN, which moves 98k.
Streeting this week are titles by BIGHIT/Geffenโs Jung Kook, CoJo/Warner Nashvilleโs Cody Johnson, RCAโs Kevin Abstract, Sony Latin/Joytime Collectiveโs Marshmello, Broken Bowโs Jason Aldean and Mailboat/Sun Records' late, great Jimmy Buffett.
