This year started out lackluster but the last few months made it the best year since 2021. Best since at least 2015, if not 2012. 2020 and 2021 were good years for the charts

2023 was the year during which it felt like music industry became completely irrelevant. No new artists and the established artists kept flopping. It was also the year that AI generated content became a thing, which only made the outlook on the future more pessimistic. Only country did well on the charts and even then... I feel like 2022 showed us early warning signs but despite being barren it still had enough memorable hits compared to 2023
I'd say, from best to worst 2024 2021 2020 2022 2023

can't believe Cruel Summer will be #11 or #12, I really thought it was a sure top 5.
Lose Control at #1 is so.......idk, it's such a non-event of a song. I think it'll be a fight between Lose Control and I Had Some Help and maaybe A Bar Song.

Every year we have the same hand-wringing over songs that don't seem like "events" getting to the top of the YE. It's not that complicated; events don't give chart points. Social discourse doesn't give chart points. What does? Streaming, radio, and sales during the wacky BB YE period that now ends about three months before the year does.
It may seem a surprise that Cruel Summer isn't going to hit the top ten, but when we see the way that streaming picked up in the late spring and early summer and see that Cruel Summer didn't manage to stay on the charts long enough to rack up the weeks it would need to hold off those hits, it isn't really all that surprising after all.

I mean, Lose Control does feel like an anti-climatic number 1, I know there were some opinions about Last Night's run at 1 but at least it felt like the biggest hit of the year.
I thought Cruel Summer for sure would have been a top 5 lock but the explosion in the Spring-Summer will now force it out of the top 10 all together.

^Cruel Summer had its second chart run (52 weeks) split over two YE Hot 100s with 21 weeks counting toward the 2023 one and 31 weeks toward the 2024 one. Over the last few YEs, most top 10 YEs needed more than 30 weeks to make it.

If I had to rank the 2020s so far, this is how it would go.
1. 2021 2. 2024 3. 2020 4. 2023 5. 2022 (this was such an irrelevant year even with RUTH, FC, ADT and AIW)

Again, the projection for Lose Control is probably high, as it will go recurrent once it falls below #25. at present, that may cut off the song at 8640 points, whereas Lovin' On Me may fall off sooner by dipping below #50, but his current lead may be enough to give him the victory. If I was a betting man, my money would be on Harlow.

So with just 14 weeks left, how realistic is it that a song debuting now will have a shot at making the Hot 100 year end chart?
Will it have to enter the top 10 region and remain there for the next 14 weeks?

Will it have to enter the top 10 region and remain there for the next 14 weeks? i'd say debuting in the top 25 and staying there for the next 14 weeks should be enough. totc has the cutoff set at 1400 so a song debuting now would need to average 100+ points until october in order to make it. of course, there will always be outliers. a song can debut like really low then explode in popularity and clinch a spot in the year end.

^There have been songs this year that have managed to pass the cutoff that has been used in as few as 4 or 5 weeks.

Regarding Cruel Summer, I too am surprised it might not make the top 10, but not too much, as Shake It Off, her current biggest Hot 100 hit, also never made the top 10 in either of the two year-ends it charted, #13 for 2014 and #18 for 2015. Coincidentally, if Cruel Summer finishes at #13 this year, it will have those same rankings switched for the 1st and 2nd years, which would still be very reflective of its gigantic success. I was honestly a little surprised it made it as high as #18 last year with only 21 weeks on the chart, 15 in the top 10, and none at #1 yet. This year, the points competition is just a little fiercer, so it sort of balances out.

Could this be the first year-end Top 10 in a very long time where no artist appears twice?

Billboard Year End List Predictions 3/4 edition 3/4 of the year will be done next week so let’s make a preview ahead on what’s to clinch 140,000 is projected cutoff for now (I could see this rising to around 147,500 with how strong the charts are 150,000 is a no questions asked will be on the year End list Euphoria 100% Passes cutoff next week and locks week after Good Luck Babe! 100% Locks Next Week Please Please Please 100%^ Down Bad 40% This might seem like I’m lowballing here but it might not even survive next week with Zach Bryan’s Album Bomb and then the week after is no guarentee it’ll stay on either it has to remain stable Gata Only 100% Locks In 2 Weeks Cowgirls 100% Locks In 2 Weeks Pink Skies 100% Locks In 2 Weeks Slow It Down 80% Will Def pass 140,000 and prolly just make 150,000 Lunch 95% Barring a major collapse this’ll lock In early August Scared To Start 5% This is possible for it to dodge recurrency but not looking likely Houdini 100% Eminem’s album next week locks up a spot Miles On It 95% With Nashville radio on board it’ll have no issue making it Bulletproof 70% As long as radio peaks normally for this it’ll prolly make it
Top 50 Predictions 200,000 Is Cutoff
Here’s Songs with no shot at top 50 I Like The Way You Kiss Me Where It Ends Whatever She Wants All of These are nearing the end of there runs with no feasible way to lock
Birds Of A Feather 100% With radio on board this lock in a month Wanna Be 75% On pace to lock before week 20 I Can Do It With A Broken Heart 95% With radio bout to come on board should have no issue Austin 85% This has enough of a cushion to where it’ll prolly be in the 40-50 range Get It Sexxy 60% Getting a 21st Week essentially locks it for top 50 Type Shit 50% Will be very close by the time it gets to Week 20. A 21st Week locks this as well Yah Glo! 80% Only needs around 3 More week and I think it’ll get it End Of Beginning 50% Locks if it charts next week but not guaranteed to
Top 25 Cutoff 340,000 Is Cutoff We Can’t Be Friends 50% Needs around 800 More points which idk if it can manage Fortnite 65% I could see radio dropping this fast but I think it’ll make it but lower part of top 25 Saturn 65%^ Feather 60% Needs around 500 more points but radio could drop this quick with Sabrina pushing 2 more singles to radio Espresso 100% Locks Next Week
I already went over top 10 A few days ago so to just repeat here’s what I Think will be the top songs of 2024 1.Lose Control 2.Lovin On Me 3.Beautiful Things 4.I Remember Everything 5.I Had Some Help 6.A Bar Song 7.Not Like Us 8.Million Dollar Baby 9.Espresso 10.Too Sweet 11.Stick Season 12.Cruel Summer 13.Greedy 14.Like That 15.Agora Hills
Here’s The part where I discuss the remaining songs I think have a shot at the Year End Chihiro -Absolutely needs 20 weeks but I could see this doing it Wind Up Missing You-Will buck recurrency with the radio it’s going to pick up eventually but will radio get on fast enough to clinch is an open question Ain’t No Love In Oklahoma-Luke Combs is a radio daring and a giant for Country Streaming but how much relevancy will this gets after the hype for the New Twisters movie dies down? Pour Me A Drink-Depends on how fast country radio gets on board and how big posts album is Whiskey Whiskey-Is This another Stand By Me where it’ll miss or Another Broadway Girls? High Road-Seems Like it has a strong shot but how long will streaming keep up and will radio get on board? TGIF-Off to a strong start but is it a little late for it to made it? I Am Not Okay-^ Devil Is A Lie-Depends On how much relevance Tommy Richman will have Hot To Go-Chappell Roan is in now but there is questions on if her momentum stays after Pride Months over You Look Like You Love-Probably not needs radio to explode and streaming to stay as strong as it is.Not impossible though Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido-^ Dirt Cheap-Needs a normal Country radio run plus a 21 week prolly Stargazing-Prolly needs to break into top 30 to be in the discussion more Band4Band-Needs to stabilize and not fall off like it is right now The Boy Is Mine-Needs to have a slow run on radio and hope streaming dosent dip too hard Think I’m In Love With You-Needs to regain its streaming peak it had and hope radio starts to get on board fully (Nashville don’t fuck this up) Lies Lies Lies-Prolly makes it and is assured a spot if Wallen Drops an album but what if he flops? 28-Zach Bryan’s Streaming is legendary good but he needs to keep it up for all 14 Week this’ll chart to hope this makes it

Taylor is definitely going to be the top artist this year, which will the be 4th time she’s achieved this (after doing so in 2009, 2015, and 2023), making her the artist to have been the artist of the year the most times.
She’s undoubtedly going to also be the top albums artist this year, which will be the SEVENTH time she’s achieved (doing so in 2009, 2010, 2015, 2021, 2022, and 2023), and the fourth consecutive year alone.
Not sure who the top singles artist of the year will be.
