Mediabase - Top 40/Mainstream - 2023 Year-End Chart

Another year, another year-end chart. The 2023 chart year has come to a close. The year ran from November 6, 2022 through November 4, 2023 (a tracking period that includes the Sunday published charts from November 13, 2022 through November 5, 2023). As always, I'll make adjustments if I have it wrong.
As usual, Mediabase counts ALL spins, including recurrent play. Mediabase's only requirement is that a track must have spent at least one week as a "current" during the tracking period to be eliglble for inclusion in the year-end rankings. Year-long recurrents don't count. But if they did, I've shown where they would have landed within the top 100. Artist spin-weighting divides spins amongst the performers credited on each track with a greater weight given to lead performers over featured performers. As I only have access to the top 50 currents and recurrents on All Access, this won't be an exact match to Mediabase's official year-end rankings. But, my projections are usually pretty close. The official charts will be released in early December.
This year's method of chart tabulation was, thankfully, business as usual. Though, we had some scares. Back in July, it was announced that All Access would be shutting down the following month due to a dire financial outlook. Thankfully, leveler heads prevailed and, instead of shutting down, All Access stripped down their web site to a smaller set of features that they could continue to offer. Fortunately, the Mediabase airplay charts remained in the "keep" pile. Just last month, we learned that All Access (Or just one of its businesses. Not entirely clear.) had been acquired by Mediabase. Will this impact how we do this in the future? We don't know, yet. So far, All Access has been chugging along as usual. Hopefully, that will continue.

The Weeknd claims the #1 song of 2023 with a song that was, originally, released in 2017: “Die For You”. The Weeknd is no stranger to the top of the year-end chart. He, also, topped the 2020 year-end chart with “Blinding Lights”. This makes The Weeknd only the fourth act in the, combined, R&R/Mediabase chart history who can lay claim to multiple year-end #1s. The other three acts to pull this off have been Mariah Carey (#1 of 1990 with “Vision Of Love” and 1993 with “Dreamlover”), Bruno Mars (#1 of 2013 with “Locked Out Of Heaven” and featured on the #1 of 2015, Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk!”), and Dua Lipa (#1 of 2018 with “New Rules” and 2021 with “Levitating”).
The race for #1 was a close one, as the year wound down. “Die For You” had a, commanding, lead for most of the year. “Calm Down” steadily narrowed the gap, but couldn’t quite close it, falling short by just over 8,200 spins. “Calm Down” did, however, set a new record for chart longevity by remaining in the top 40 for over a year. And it doesn’t look like it will be leaving for several more weeks.
16 songs could lay claim to being #1 hits during the 2023 chart year. The longest reigning of those was Miley Cyrus’s “Flowers”, which spent 10 weeks in the pole position and finishes the year at #3. “Flowers” is the longest running #1 since The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber spent 12 weeks on top in 2021 with “Stay”.
At the bottem end of the top 10, “As It Was” by Harry Styles, does something that has never been done before. It’s the first song to finish in the top 10 for two different chart years. “As It Was” was #4 for 2022 and is #10 for 2023, owing to its incredible longevity. The song hit #1 in May of 2022 and was still in the top 10 as the 2022 chart year closed. It, finally, fell out of the top 10 and went recurrent by the end of January of this year.
Still think pop radio isn’t kind to veteran artists? 2023 saw quite a few comebacks from acts who haven’t had a pop hit for a prolonged period of time. Some, more than a decade. Among the artitsts we said “welcome back” to were Aqua, Madonna, Fatboy Slim, Timbaland, Nelly Furtado, *NSYNC, Usher, Kylie Minogue, Chic’s Nile Rodgers, Ciara, and Diddy.
2023 was, also, a particulary strong year for country crossovers. Morgan Wallen and Luke Combs both had big top 10 hits on the pop chart. Kane Brown, Jelly Roll, Zach Bryan, and Parmalee also left their mark on the pop top 50.
On the artist chart, it's clear that 2023 was the year of Taylor. Taylor Swift ranks in as the year's most played artist by a mile. Between her 11 charted singles, during the chart year, she racked up over 1.1 million spins. The Weeknd lands in as the top male artist. Metro Boomin ranks as the top new artist and top new male artist, and Coi Leray, the top new female artist. Fifty Fifty are the top ranking group.
As usual, Mediabase counts ALL spins, including recurrent play. Mediabase's only requirement is that a track must have spent at least one week as a "current" during the tracking period to be eliglble for inclusion in the year-end rankings. Year-long recurrents don't count. But if they did, I've shown where they would have landed within the top 100. Artist spin-weighting divides spins amongst the performers credited on each track with a greater weight given to lead performers over featured performers. As I only have access to the top 50 currents and recurrents on All Access, this won't be an exact match to Mediabase's official year-end rankings. But, my projections are usually pretty close. The official charts will be released in early December.
This year's method of chart tabulation was, thankfully, business as usual. Though, we had some scares. Back in July, it was announced that All Access would be shutting down the following month due to a dire financial outlook. Thankfully, leveler heads prevailed and, instead of shutting down, All Access stripped down their web site to a smaller set of features that they could continue to offer. Fortunately, the Mediabase airplay charts remained in the "keep" pile. Just last month, we learned that All Access (Or just one of its businesses. Not entirely clear.) had been acquired by Mediabase. Will this impact how we do this in the future? We don't know, yet. So far, All Access has been chugging along as usual. Hopefully, that will continue.

The Weeknd claims the #1 song of 2023 with a song that was, originally, released in 2017: “Die For You”. The Weeknd is no stranger to the top of the year-end chart. He, also, topped the 2020 year-end chart with “Blinding Lights”. This makes The Weeknd only the fourth act in the, combined, R&R/Mediabase chart history who can lay claim to multiple year-end #1s. The other three acts to pull this off have been Mariah Carey (#1 of 1990 with “Vision Of Love” and 1993 with “Dreamlover”), Bruno Mars (#1 of 2013 with “Locked Out Of Heaven” and featured on the #1 of 2015, Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk!”), and Dua Lipa (#1 of 2018 with “New Rules” and 2021 with “Levitating”).
The race for #1 was a close one, as the year wound down. “Die For You” had a, commanding, lead for most of the year. “Calm Down” steadily narrowed the gap, but couldn’t quite close it, falling short by just over 8,200 spins. “Calm Down” did, however, set a new record for chart longevity by remaining in the top 40 for over a year. And it doesn’t look like it will be leaving for several more weeks.
16 songs could lay claim to being #1 hits during the 2023 chart year. The longest reigning of those was Miley Cyrus’s “Flowers”, which spent 10 weeks in the pole position and finishes the year at #3. “Flowers” is the longest running #1 since The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber spent 12 weeks on top in 2021 with “Stay”.
At the bottem end of the top 10, “As It Was” by Harry Styles, does something that has never been done before. It’s the first song to finish in the top 10 for two different chart years. “As It Was” was #4 for 2022 and is #10 for 2023, owing to its incredible longevity. The song hit #1 in May of 2022 and was still in the top 10 as the 2022 chart year closed. It, finally, fell out of the top 10 and went recurrent by the end of January of this year.
Still think pop radio isn’t kind to veteran artists? 2023 saw quite a few comebacks from acts who haven’t had a pop hit for a prolonged period of time. Some, more than a decade. Among the artitsts we said “welcome back” to were Aqua, Madonna, Fatboy Slim, Timbaland, Nelly Furtado, *NSYNC, Usher, Kylie Minogue, Chic’s Nile Rodgers, Ciara, and Diddy.
2023 was, also, a particulary strong year for country crossovers. Morgan Wallen and Luke Combs both had big top 10 hits on the pop chart. Kane Brown, Jelly Roll, Zach Bryan, and Parmalee also left their mark on the pop top 50.
On the artist chart, it's clear that 2023 was the year of Taylor. Taylor Swift ranks in as the year's most played artist by a mile. Between her 11 charted singles, during the chart year, she racked up over 1.1 million spins. The Weeknd lands in as the top male artist. Metro Boomin ranks as the top new artist and top new male artist, and Coi Leray, the top new female artist. Fifty Fifty are the top ranking group.
