It's not silly, it's totally understandable.

Although for me I would consider an industry plant to be someone where their label manufactures a fake "person who started from the bottom and accidentally became famous" narrative for an artist, like with Ice Spice who was in fact heavily promoted from day 1. Or Lizzo where they decided to make her famous (when Juice came out) and got her on big talk shows, etc. Juice flopped, but then Truth Hurts went viral and her label pushed the narrative that it was a mere accident when in fact they'd been trying to make any song in her catalog go viral. I think people don't like this kind of thing because it's deceptive.

I think deception is the key word here in regards to being an "industry plant." In some ways, being "inauthentic" is similar, but really a lot of our best pop stars have a stage persona that of course is different from how they were before being famous, and that's a good thing. I think Lady Gaga didn't get as much hate for being inauthentic because she was clearly putting on an act, even when she insisted that that was how she really was. I remember people calling out Lana Del Rey back when Video Games came out, but in the end she proved she is a true artist.

The best recent example I can think of that would fit the industry plant label is Gayle (sorry) because of the TikTok video where she was asked to write a song using the alphabet, and the video makes it look like it's a random fan when it's actually a literal industry employee for her label. That was just messy. Especially because the video was made before the single came out and they made it seem like she just wrote this amazing song because a fan made a random request.

On first listen, I like this so much better than "Greedy" (I know it's a hot take, but the chorus of that song is a bit whiney to me and it's never clicked for me). Hoping this is as big of a hit for as "Greedy" is becoming!
