I think for some artists a relatively forgettable number one (at least by their standards) can ultimately add to their legacy: MJ's "You Are Not Alone", Taylor's "Cardigan", Mariah's "Don't Forget About Us", Drake's "What's Next", Ariana & Bieber's "Stuck With U"...these songs show how popular and powerful they were, that even these less iconic songs in their catalog could go to number one. It certainly doesn't take anything away from them, it's just extra sprinkles on the sundae. I understand your point, but Cardigan doesn’t belong on this list to begin with. It has more than a billion streams and is still doing 1 million daily streams for 1 year straight, and Still charting on Spotify global 200 right now. It’s not like some of those 10iq twitter stans would like to pretend, that it is a song which has no business being #1 other than the artist forcing it by using gimmicks. The whole folklore era was huge. It is gonna be #9 on the BB200 this upcoming week. It is one of the top 10 best selling album of the 2020s and IFPI year-end #2. So those twitter stans trying to portray Taylor and her whole folk era as not being super successful are just stupid. It is still a more successfu era than their fave’s peak probably, most definitely has more longevity than them, and cardigan has about enough streams to debut #1 anyway. Certainly right now in January where the competition is only 260 points it would’ve been #1 with no sales.

I posted that KNOWING someone was going to chime in "nOt taYloR!". That's why I said "by their standards". When most (non-Swiftie) people think of classic, iconic Taylor Swift singles they are never going to name "Cardigan". Folklore and Evermore as albums absolutely, but not "Cardigan" and "Willow" as singles.

It was a legit hit but seems pretty minor stacked against all of Michael's other classics. It also probably hasn't helped the song's legacy that R. Kelly wrote it......

Good point about the chart manipulation! Didn’t think about that. Although I would probably say that his most forgettable #1 hit is probably “Ben”, which I feel like a lot of the younger crowd don’t really know about.

Dua Lipa is a good example of longevity. She's never hit the top spot but has multiple songs that are still radio staples and have billions of streams. Wouldn't be surprised if Houdini even got another random wind of traction given her history. Imagine if it’s levitating 2.0 and becomes a year-end #1.

Question: Why does an artist need to release that many versions? Is it because there's a limit on purchases per user?

Yeah Levitating was already in the Top 10 at this point, while Don’t Start Now was climbing inside the Top 20. She should just drop the next single.

Question: Why does an artist need to release that many versions? Is it because there's a limit on purchases per user? you can only buy one of each version. after that, itunes will just tell you 'you already own this' if u try to buy it again. and billboard did away with webstore sells few months ago. youll basically need 14 new remixes to match the buying power of 2-3 same point last year.

1st weeks on US Spotify: 7 Rings 28.2 mil Break Up with Your Girlfriend 22.7 mil Thank U Next 22.5 mil
Nasa 14.9 mil Needy 14.6 mil Bad Idea 13.2 mil Yes And 12.9 mil Positions 12.7 mil No Tears 11.7 mil
I'd forgotten precisely how big she was that one era. Over 4 million daily average for 1 song, over 3 million for 2 others.

"yes, and?" down to #4 on U.S. Spotify.
More so I'd like to note "I Remember Everything" is still top 5, despite no real airplay or other promotion. It has to be one of the most organic hits we've had in a long time ("Cruel Summer" is as well, of course, but it's at least by a known hitmaker whereas "IRE" is not so that makes it even more impressive to me).

IRE could’ve been a 10 week number one with country radio support and promo. I believe radio should be a key chart component but it’s crazy how disconnected radio, especially country, can be from songs people are actually streaming and how slow they catch on to hits. It’s not surprising why nobody under 25 listens to radio anymore.

A chart figure is only one aspect of how successful a song can look in the long run. It’s all in the label’s marketing. If a song reaches #1, that’s an easy point to work with. If it doesn’t, there are always others ways to paint a song/era as successful. The data nerd in me wishes I had access to radio, streaming, and sales data for as far back as I can to track the performance over time of songs regardless of recurrent and gold status.

1st weeks on US Spotify: 7 Rings 28.2 mil Break Up with Your Girlfriend 22.7 mil Thank U Next 22.5 mil Nasa 14.9 mil Needy 14.6 mil Bad Idea 13.2 mil Yes And 12.9 mil Positions 12.7 mil No Tears 11.7 mil I'd forgotten precisely how big she was that one era. Over 4 million daily average for 1 song, over 3 million for 2 others. Yeah, but it also seems like streaming numbers I'm general in the last year or so have gone down tremendously. I don't understand why?

The pop star scores her ninth AC leader, extending her mark for the most this century.
Surely continuing to spark warm thoughts amid winter, Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” climbs to No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart, dated Jan. 27.
The song, released on Republic Records, becomes Swift’s ninth AC leader, extending her mark for the most among all acts over the 2000s, ‘10s and ‘20s. In that span, Adele, Michel Bublé and Josh Groban rank second with six No. 1s each.
Meanwhile, “Cruel Summer” halts the record 37-week No. 1 run on Adult Contemporary of Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers.”
Here’s a recap of Swift’s nine Adult Contemporary No. 1s:
“Cruel Summer,” one week to date at No. 1, Jan. 27, 2024 “Anti-Hero,” three weeks, beginning March 25, 2023 “Delicate,” 10, Sept. 15, 2018 “Style,” two, July 11, 2015 “Blank Space,” four, Feb. 21, 2015 “Shake It Off,” nine, Nov. 22, 2014 “Mine,” one week, Dec. 11, 2010 “You Belong With Me,” 14, Oct. 31, 2009 “Love Story,” six, June 6, 2009
“Cruel Summer” was originally released on Swift’s 2019 album Lover. Republic began promoting the song as a single last June, after Swift began performing it on her The Eras Tour, her first in which she’s been able to spotlight songs from Lover, which was released shortly before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The song also adds a new milestone atop the Adult Pop Airplay chart, where it logs a 20th week at No. 1, becoming just the fourth hit to have reigned for at least that long since the survey began in Billboard’s pages in March 1996. “Cruel Summer” trails only the commands of Santana’s “Smooth,” featuring Rob Thomas (25 weeks, 1999-2000), and The Calling’s “Wherever You Will Go” (23 weeks, 2001-02) and ties the rule of The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” in 2020.
Among other chart honors for “Cruel Summer,” it became the landmark 10th of Swift’s 11 career No. 1s on the all-genre, multimetric Billboard Hot 100, reigning for four weeks, and her record-breaking 12th No. 1, and her longest-leading (10 weeks), on Pop Airplay.
Plus, “Cruel Summer” is Swift’s sixth song to triple up with No. 1 ranks on Adult Contemporary, Adult Pop Airplay and Pop Airplay, joining “Anti-Hero,” “Delicate,” “Style,” “Blank Space” and “Shake It Off.” She now solely boasts the most such leaders, one-upping Adele’s five at each of the three formats (“Rolling in the Deep,” “Set Fire to the Rain,” “Hello,” “Send My Love [To Your Lover]” and “Easy on Me,” in 2011-22).
As for yet one more Swift chart feat this week, her “Is It Over Now? (Taylor’s Version) [From the Vault]” jumps 11-8 on Adult Pop Airplay. It becomes her record-extending 30th top 10 on the tally, further distancing herself from Maroon 5, second with 27, and P!nk (20).
All charts dated Jan. 27 will update on Billboard.com Tuesday, Jan. 23.

"Cardigan" is still charting on most worldwide streaming charts and is well above 1 billion streams. I would say it's an example of a song that seemed to underperform initially but legs have been amazing, even if the Hot 100 doesn't reflect that because they stop adding points to recurrent songs for some reason.

I don't understand why? yeah, the average streams for #1 streaming songs in the last 5 years: 2019 - 65M (OTR had 9 weeks above 100M) 2020 - 43,9M 2021 - 36,7M 2022 - 30,7M 2023 - 33,7M (Last Night and Flowers saved this year) these numbers don't tell the whole story ofc, it doesn't mean people streamed more in 2019, just a lot fewer different songs and artists, the era of 20-30 huge hits per year is over.

I feel like US Spotify streams at least have been mostly the same since 2018 even with decreasing overall streams. #1 around 1.6m and top 10 around 800k has been the standard. More Spotify users balances out hit songs reaching less people in general.

The only thing that matters since 2019-2020 is weeks spent in the top 10-20. I thought the fervour over #1 debuts would have dissipated by now but people are still obsessed with em. This one is looks very important but it contains one condition I don't agree with. To make this list of best longsitters in top-10/20, a track has to dominate airplay charts. If a song doesn't have high numbers on radio for a long period of time, it may have Sunflower longetivity and missed that list or be much lower than it should. And it looks like that IRE will goes that way no matter how well this track holds up in streaming.

It's important to note that Billboard removed UGC from theor streaming totals in 2019, which makes the 2020 numbers look much lower compared to 2019 then they probably actually were. I imagine On Demand Streaming totals look substantially better.
