Yeah, and “Like I Love You” was a decent hit as JT’s first solo single. He just happened to outperform it with his next.
The first example that came to mind for me was Janet’s Velvet Rope era. But nearly 30 years ago isn’t always great to use as a comparison to something happening now. Then you have early 2000s examples like Usher’s “Pop Ya Collar” and Monica’s “All Eyez On Me” where the first single flopped so bad the albums were delayed (though it might have also been a result of them leaking too - but in both cases, they were intended as first singles and they flopped. Monica’s was a jam though. Undeserved flop)

The song was basic as hell (but those garage remixes were cute).

That happened a lot to Pop stars in the early 2000s. Dirrty -> Beautiful MATM -> Toxic Sweetest Sin -> With You It’s Like That -> We Belong Together Like I Love You -> Cry Me a River What You Waiting For? -> Rich Girl Don’t Tell Me -> My Happy Ending Breakaway -> Since U Been Gone Stupid Girls -> U+Ur Hand Not sure how some of these are examples. "It's Like That" did really well considering where Mariah was at in her career; it went top 10 in downloads and top 10 in some airplay formats, and it peaked at #16 only because its peaks didn't align. "Stupid Girls" was coming off of the 'Try This' era which could have potentially been career-ending for her. "Stupid Girls" got her back in radio's good graces and helped set up the crazy run she had for years afterward. A lead single not charting as high as its follow-up doesn't mean it was a flop; sometimes you don't get the bigger follow-up if the lead didn't do its job and set the stage. You have to look at what the expectations were...no one was banking on Mariah and P!nk getting top 20 hits after the failure of their previous albums, and those songs led to a solid course correction.

Please let this #2 debut ≠ flop shit go🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Plenty of songs have either re-peaked, or hit the summit in time.(and obviously there were some that didn't and, that's okay!) Yeah, and “Like I Love You” was a decent hit as JT’s first solo single. He just happened to outperform it with his next. The first example that came to mind for me was Janet’s Velvet Rope era. Not sure how some of these are examples. "It's Like That" did really well considering where Mariah was at in her career; it went top 10 in downloads and top 10 in some airplay formats, and it peaked at #16 only because its peaks didn't align. It gave Mariah momentum and helped set up "We Belong Together," and I don't see how it was a flop considering Glitter. In terms of actual impact, it was actually her biggest single with her as a lead artist since "Heartbreaker" over 5 years prior. "Breakaway" definitely wasn't a flop. It made #6 on the Hot 100, which was higher than "Miss Independent" and certainly a good peak coming off the last two singles from her debut. It really helped set that era up as a multi-format success. An interesting era that could apply is Usher's Raymond v Raymond era. "Papers" flopped, and then some other singles underperformed before "OMG" then went to #1 on the Hot 100. I think that's true with the P!nk example too.
Maybe not a flop, but I think songs like It's Like That and Like I Love You can definitely be called under-performances and overall not measuring up compared to how their follow-ups did and all of the biggest hits from those stars, regardless of how their most recent previously-released singles performed. The disparity between a moderate top 20 hit and a major #1 or top 5 is very great, and a top 20 hit, unless it has huge longevity (or sometimes even a top 10 hit if it has poor longevity), can obviously not set the stage on its own for a major pop era and add to the major chart legacy of a huge pop star of their caliber. I'm assuming we're mainly talking about major pop stars here, but of course it's all relative. For someone with no history of charting hits at all, a top 20 hit could be considered a major breakthrough and a major success.
Some other interesting examples no one has mentioned yet include:
Not just Gwen Stefani's 1st, but her 2nd album: Wind It Up - The Sweet Escape Beyonce's B'Day: Both Deja Vu and Ring The Alarm - Irreplaceable Chris Brown's Exclusive: Wall To Wall - Kiss Kiss Rihanna's Rated R: Russian Roulette (and maybe Hard as well) - Rude Boy

But, all of their second singles were smashes and outperformed the leads.

Even if Ariana gets #1, the second week is gonna be rough. Depending on the streaming losses we'll probably see it go 1-4, and then fall even lower week 3 and beyond. I don't really see it being above Jack, Taylor or Tate in week 2.

I’m not a big Ariana fan but I think her new song is fire. Don’t get the disconnect if it’s not a big hit.

Radio will probably be there, and I don't think it'll fall below 500k on Spotify just yet, I can see it being in the #5-10 area for 10 weeks or so (it depends on the album), numbers similar to Agora Hills (top 10 radio, top 20 streaming).

So, regarding Ariana's new lead single "Yes, And?", I have to say that I find it pretty creative and original. I feel it pays homage to the big, lush, campy early-90s Diva House tracks but with a more ambient aura. To me, it feels like a chill, restrained version of the early 90s discofied-house classics released by Martha Wash, CeCe Pattison, Crystal Waters, Deee-Lite, Robin S, Kym Sims, Cathy Dennis etc.
I personally enjoy its more toned-down production. I understand why some people find its presentation to be a little "crude", "unpolished", "unfinished" and "demo-like" (especially given Max Martin's involvement) but I feel like it was intended to sound a little more understated. At the end of the day, if she released a big straight-forward electro banger it would sound dated and too early-2010s imo. She kind of took the Beyonce Renaissance route, adopting a relatively more cutesy, melodic sound than Beyonce's rawer House sound. Glad both these great vocalists embraced the beautiful 90s house sound, I just love rich soulful vocals set against a solid house production. Also, love the nods to Madonna's early 90s House sound, particularly apparent in the Vogue-like rap of the bridge.
Yes, the song might not sound like an instant classic but it could become one of those subdued streaming darlings. It kinda has a cutesy Spotify-ready relaxed vibe. We'll see, it's way too early to tell. But I certainly enjoy the track, it's just so beautifully simple and melodic to me. And Ariana's vocals sound gorgeous as per usual. I feel like it's a step in the right direction, I'd like to see her explore deep, soulful disco-house in the future, she has the potential to deliver even more striking house tracks imo.
As far as her chart performance goes, her opening Spotify streams seem solid, as expected (3M+ on day 1 and 2M+ on day 2 in the US). Let's see if she stabilizes, which she'll need to score a #1 debut. On radio she's at 12.74M on day 2, which is good enough. I feel like Pop and HAC radio will, at least initially, support this track. However, maybe a more R&B-tinged follow-up single would become a more effective radio staple. The chill-dance nature of "Yes, And?" is technically compatible with the various top 40 radio formats and recent dance numbers by Dua Lipa and Bebe Rexha have performed well on the airwaves, so Ariana does stand a chance for radio success with this track, but that remains to be seen.
Also, given the song is currently occupying more than half of iTunes' top 10 (including the #1 spot, obviously), I could see this selling 30k+ this week. That could technically boost her points ahead of Jack Harlow's. It will be a very narrow race, which will mostly depend on how Ariana holds up in streaming.
Oh, and let's not forget the YouTube video, even though I know this factor has been relegated to secondary status in the US and Europe. It's done 14M+ in 2 days globally. I wonder if the US YT streams will make any difference. And let me just add that I loved the music video too! I loved the Paula Abdul "Cold Hearted" homage. Everything from the hat, to the outfit, to the dance moves, to the set-up, to the audience observing her were such cute references to the classic Abdul video! One of her best and most visually striking videos imo! She looked stunning too and her dancing really showed off her Broadway background!

All of these first singles did well in some way. None of them were bombs or flops. But, all of their second singles were smashes and outperformed the leads.
Breakaway - Since U Been Gone is particularly the poorest example though, and doesn't belong in this group. Breakaway was on the Hot 100 for as long as SUBG (46 weeks), and spent 10 weeks in the top 10. They were both so big, ranking in the year-end top 10 (or at least Breakaway would've ranked in the top 10 if it all counted towards one year), that the fact that SUBG performed a little better is immaterial. Was Boom Boom Pow an underperformance and a letdown because I Gotta Feeling went on to outperform it?

If Bad Idea right charts that current week it will be its week 20, last week that will be dated February 20, the song is predicted to fall from #80 to #88 to a nineninth week. I'm sure it will fall less than that, we'll discover after tomorrow. The problem with that current weeks is guy that released an album, but streams is similar to last week, and the song keeps with some radio points, I think it will chart in 90-100 region next week. If Olívia released deluxe, probably could surpass Traitor weeks om hot 100, not just BIR but Get him back too, that last one is going easily to more than 20 weeks, radio is loving better than BIR. I think it's impressive in a supposed flop era, she archive all singles with +20weeks on hot 100.

kworb's Billboard Radio Songs Estimates « 2024 » / « 01 » / « 15 »
1(=) Taylor Swift - Cruel Summer 76.60(-0.10) 2(=) Jack Harlow - Lovin On Me 67.02(+1.92) + 3(=) Tyla - Water 62.41(-0.35) 4(=) Doja Cat - Paint The Town Red 61.83(-0.59) 5(=) Tate McRae - greedy 60.50(-0.19) 6(=) SZA - Snooze 50.90(-0.66) 7(+1) Nate Smith - World on Fire 50.07(-0.23) 8(-1) Rema & Selena Gomez - Calm Down 50.06(-0.31) 9(=) Luke Combs - Fast Car 49.76(+0.01) 10(+1) Doja Cat - Agora Hills 48.73(+1.32)
43(+1) Nicki Minaj - Everybody (feat. Lil Uzi Vert) 22.69(+2.09)
81(+13) Ariana Grande - yes, and? 12.74(+2.55)
-(-) Lil Nas X - J CHRIST 4.01(+0.89)
-(-) Nicki Minaj - FTCU 2.65(+1.08) + -(-) Zhamira Zambrano - Estrellita 2.51(+2.25) + -(-) Luar La L & Ozuna - Otra Vibra 1.11(+1.02) +
As soon as Jack displaces Cruel Summer on Radio, he’ll have that #1 spot for himself as long as he wants especially with LOM’s first challenger absolutely failing to debut atop. Won’t be surprised if LOM is still at #1 in mid-March at this point…ugh.

I’m surprised they’re starting to drop Water from radio already, I get urban (it went #1), but I thought it would wait to fall until at least March.

'Water' already topped Rhythmic and Urban, and if I recall correctly, it had two seperate runs at #1 on both formats. It's not surprising to me at all if those two formats are done with it now, and the Pop airplay gains aren't big enough to offset the losses.

I forgot it was also #1 at Rhythmic, was really hoping that Pop would increase its spins on it. But right now, it’s only real gain at the moment is on R&B.

Jack Harlow should release tons of remixes too. that only works when you're Taylor, BTS, Nicki or Ariana.

Jack Harlow should release tons of remixes too. that only works when you're Taylor, BTS, Nicki or Ariana. Let’s not forget that Jack’s first hit “What’s Poppin’” got a significant boost to its #2 peak for several weeks because of a remix that added verses from other rappers. Obviously it wasn’t a full version blitz that these campaigns usually do, but it shows that there is room for something to give the songs gas mid-run.
