I'm not mad he felt like experimenting a little, but why did his label waste his American radio budget on this song instead of waiting for any of the next 4 singles? I hated "Brazil" when it was out but grew to really like everything else he's put out. This was a huge step back.

Whoa what was going on with the first 2016 Alt rankdown for Brazil to be that low? Not shedding any tears for this year's Declan McKenna song, though. I've heard some people call it experimental for him, and yeah for his standards it's a different sound, but I definitely still categorize it as basic indie pop schlock.
AJR is overhated online in general (I mean every single song of theirs so far ranked in the bottom four? That's so dramatic. Bottom twenty would make more sense.) but I won't disagree with the sentiment The Dumb Song is them with finally some real creativity and passion behind them. Production just still really falls flat for me.
Cannot believe I'm seeing Dummy escape the bottom twenty both here and on TOTC. Hell, to reference above, the "duh-duhhhh" part sounds like everything that was once so hateable about AJR, except with utterly soulless production behind it.
I always knew I'd be among the higher rankers for the Beach Weather songs but geez I didn't expect this low and certainly didn't expect Sex, Drugs, Etc. to be higher. I think this singer is really good at hitting those high notes.

messy in heaven would've probably been my #100 rank here, why are a good amount of the biggest drum and bass songs this decade also the worst ones?

Playing catch-up because I couldn't get started right away.
100. BoyWithUke ft. Oliver Tree - "Sick Of U" (my rank: #99) More like "BoyWithPuke ft. Oliver Pee amirite" ha ha ha got 'em.
99. Falling In Reverse - "Last Resort (Reimagined)" (my rank #93) Honestly I think this had potential but this desperately needed to explode into metal at some point for this cover to work, especially with Ronnie Radke's screams. Radke doesn't have the voice for this electro-orchestral thing FIR was doing and they didn't have the budget to make it work either. Overall just a total misfire.
98. YUNGBLUD - "Lowlife" (my rank: #96) Just when I thought the guy was starting to turn the corner he winds up making bottom-of-the-barrel garbage again, and he pulled a kid's choir into it too. I just don't know what he or anyone else involved with the track was thinking.
97. Giovannie & The Hired Guns - "Overrated" (my rank: #84) I feel like this was a halfway decent song derailed by the grating vocal delivery. There's some good ideas here with the instrumental - especially with the unorthodox choice of involving a tuba! Can't say I've heard a butt rock song pull a tuba into a song before. But the opening chorus and the verses desperately needed to be sung more clean and the grizzled delivery needed to be saved for the heavier choruses later. The song makes a poor first impression and doesn't recover. It's a shame because the band actually isn't half-bad but they picked the worst song from the album to be the second single.
96. Thirty Seconds To Mars - "Stuck" (my rank: #100) I feel like I ranked this one dead last despite some songs arguably irritating me more like "Lowlife" because I still hold a marginal amount of expectations for 30STM that I don't have for the likes of BoyWithUke or Falling In Reverse. Clearly they are misplaced. Anyway this song sucks donkey balls and sounds like Maroon 5 if Jared took over for Adam Levine.
95. Matt Maeson - "Cut Deep" (my rank: #69) Very basic indie rocker tune, honestly I didn't feel like it was that bad, just rather generic. He had more interesting songs on the album.
94. Dirty Heads - "Rescue Me" (my rank: #95) I've never liked these guys and this did nothing to dissuade my opinion of them. What good there is on this is because of the RHCP interpolation.
93. Blue October - "Where Did You Go I'm Less Of A Mess These Days" (my rank: #92) Second near-miss of a perfect in a row, dang. Anyway, there's a nice flow in the chorus, but the lyrics are just awful. Some of the worst that Blue October has ever recorded. Also, wow, look at their history, talk about a hit-or-miss band.
92. Koe Wetzel - "Creeps" (my rank: #85) The "grunge if it came out of Nashville" sound is pretty unique, but the clumsy lyrics dragged this one down for me. Wouldn't mind giving him another shot one day though.
91. lovelytheband - "sail away" (my rank: #64) This is basically a rewrite of "Broken" but less annoying and with more maturity in it. I get why people tanked it but I didn't think it was that bad.
90. blink-182 - "EDGING" (my rank: #83) I would have been more forgiving of it (the song is intentionally stupid and I have no problem with that if it's entertaining) but the production on "EDGING" is just bad. Very cut-rate. If it was produced as well as typical blink singles this would have gone up a few points, though honestly, as far as silly blink-182 songs go, this would be bottom-tier anyway.
89. Highly Suspect - "Ice Cold" (my rank: #76) This band has fallen off so hard, man. The aftershock of the absolutely atrocious MCID annihilated their fanbase overnight and the new album got virtually nothing in streams and sales. Highly Suspect are cooked, and while "Ice Cold" isn't terrible, it feels forced and uninspired. You can just kinda tell that Johnny Stevens is going through the motions throughout.
88. TALK - "Run Away to Mars" (my rank: #91) I was more forgiving of this song when it came out but in the context of the rest of the list it kinda hit me how boring it was. Feels like I'm too harsh on it but I genuinely could not elevate this out of my bottom 10 due to how uninteresting the song tended to be. TALK has done far better, so I know this isn't due to lack of talent.
87. The Struts - "Fallin' With Me" (my rank: #88) Another near-miss for me lol. Anyway, I've never cared for The Struts but this one was more aggravating than their usual for me.
86. little image - "OUT OF MY MIND" (my rank: #89) I would have been more forgiving towards this if this showed up in 2018 or 2019, but for 2023? This sound has been done to death and this particular song has nothing interesting to offer me. I can tolerate it once in a while but it's not something I'll ever seek out again.

I feel like I should dislike Snap much more but it’s sorta not bad?
idk if I overranked The Dumb Song or something but it definitely was the best AJR song I’ve heard probably.
Sympathy wasn’t Declan’s best but it didn’t need to be *this* low

85. Beach Weather f/Pale Waves - "Unlovable" (my rank: #78) The jokes write themselves with this one. While there is a hook, this song just has an overall clumsy feeling that drags it down. It's just not a song I particularly enjoy hearing.
84. All Time Low - "Calm Down" (my rank: #57) What is with Alternative artists and choosing their worst songs from their new albums to be radio singles? "Calm Down" isn't unlistenable by any means but it's just missing a lot of what makes ATL an engaging pop-punk band to listen to.
83. Milky Chance - "Living in a Haze" (my rank: #62) Honestly this wasn't bad by their standards. I enjoy the chorus and the hook somewhat. It doesn't have anything special to elevate it but it's definitely not something I'd complain about hearing on a shuffled playlist.
82. Weezer - "Records" (my rank: #86) Weezer's cooked. The band has had an insanely prolific run the last few years but they're burned out at this point and need a couple of years off. They are capable of doing far better than trying to recycle the Blue Album glory days again... and this doesn't even make it to the standard of Red Album.
81. Panic! At The Disco - "Don't Let The Light Go Out" (my rank: #87) Quite possibly Brendan Urie's most uninspired song (I hear many, many songs of old being interpolated in uninteresting fashion in this one) and it's laden with his signature oversinging. Honestly in conception I think Brendan chose the right direction for this project but it got bogged down with Brendan's Brendan-ness and without anyone reining him in it just becomes annoying. Unfortunately, we won't see a course correction as this is Panic!'s final single.
80. Chad Tepper f/DREAMERS - "I Wanna Be Your High" (my rank: #72) Lyrics are bad, but that chorus is a total earworm. It's still stuck in my head. I had to give it a few brownie points for that.
79. Portugal. The Man - "DUMMY" (my rank: #98) I knew I was going to be a mild outlier on this one. While yes, the "duh-DUH duh-DUH duh-DUH" hook activates the rage epicenter in my brain, there's more to my loathing of this track than that. I actually kinda like PTM and I've featured them on my personal year-end top 50 lists multiple times. If this had just been a uninspired indie tune like "What, Me Worry?" was I would have been disappointed but accepting, since the band was clearly going through a dreary rough patch the last few years, and the album a whole feels forced and made purely out of contractual obligation. "DUMMY" isn't remotely like that, though. "DUMMY" is so low-effort it actually pisses me off. Six years of waiting and the best lead single choice they could come up with was a song two minutes long with the two verses being near total clones of each other, a lazy counting-up chorus, instruments that sound borderline out-of-tune, and a good 10% of the song being made out of "duh" noises? This was goddamn insulting to my ears. That's why I hate it so much. I hope I never have to talk about it again.
78. half·alive - "Did I Make You Up?" (my rank: #54) This is the closest the band I tend to call "AJR if they didn't suck" has been to being as bad as AJR. It's still better than AJR's entire discography to date. A nice, light little bop, even if it's nothing special.
77. Neon Trees - "Favorite Daze" (my rank: #74) Speaking of lazy and uninspired, we have this from Neon Trees. They've done far better than this. While it's not a dumpster fire like some other disappointments, this feels like something that needed more time in the oven before it would have landed like they had wanted.
76. letdown. - "Crying In The Shower" (my rank: #67) I feel like this song is slightly misunderstood, as I read the lyrics as being from an intentionally flawed protagonist and not a personal narrative, but I could be wrong. It's still not great but I found it pretty listenable, and there's a pretty good, if generic, hook in the chorus.
75. The Revivalists - "Kid" (my rank: #63) Perfectly adequate but nothing special. They've done better in the past, but this new era for them in general feels like a step down overall. I'm not ready to write them off yet, the third album for an artist can be tricky and many stumble, but this doesn't bode too well.
74. I Prevail - "Bad Things" (my rank: #40) I just kinda knew this would be the first of my top 50 to make an exit. I actually like this one a decent deal. Great hooks throughout and while the rapping is a little raw, I feel like all of the pieces and influences come together to make something pretty memorable. I still headbang to this one every once in a while.
73. Rosa Linn - "SNAP" (my rank: #81) Inoffensive but boring. I don't really have much else to add.
72. AJR - "The Dumb Song" (my rank: #71, I'm just gonna keep nearly missing those perfects aren't I lol) The best thing AJR's ever done, even though that's not saying a whole lot (and I do rank "Sober Up" higher than the majority of Pulse). Of course it flopped, but this was legitimately a pretty decent indie pop song with a bit of ska influence in it. The horns are overprocessed and the lyrics still have some of the clumsy AJR-isms, but overall it came out to be a pretty average-y song that I didn't mind hearing! I hope they get back to working on this kind of sound because they have potential with it.
71. Declan McKenna - "Sympathy" (my rank: #90) This song was a failed experiment. I didn't find it to be among the true dregs of the Alt chart, but it wasn't appealing to me nevertheless. Just felt strange for strangeness' sake, not out of a focused vision. Not something I'll ever be returning to, but I don't regret the few times I've heard it completely, either. It's nice to hear something different even if it doesn't quite work.

100. Not good. I liked Hurt from Oliver Tree at least. Maybe time to get new friends too, the girl keeps fucking all of them because he keeps making music that goes to the bottom of the rankdown. 99. Didn't like it much - this one felt pointless, and at least Zombified didn't cross over 98. At least Yungblud had "I Love you, Will you marry me?" and Tissues is decent 97. At least Ramon Ayala was fun 96. Shocked it wasn't bottom 3. 30STM last 2 albums were weak, especially comparing them to anything 2013 and earlier 95. This song tried causing a ruckus here and only caused the equivalent of a toddler throwing a toy on the ground 94. I used to like Lay Me Down alot, and its practically a ripoff of Dani California, only slightly better than that Joe Walsh cover 93. DEPRESSING AS FUCKING FUCK 92. Jelly Roll 2.0 91. Weak compared to their last era, more similar to their broken era 90. Tom Delonge making out with a rabbit 89. What's cooler than being cool? Ice Cold 88. It's ok, just wanted to make a "This song can run away to Mars and stay", but not the worst Mars song from the last 10 years on here, but David Bowies Mars song outsold 87. Weak for these guys. Don't jump on the rooftop from the sides 86. Overhated, it probably would have been my first top 50 out also
85. The verses on this sound like Maybe (Sick Puppies). The only part I cared much about was the instrumental part past the chorus 84. Preferred Sleepwalking, but I just used the kittens from this video for my new pfp. At least I prefer this over 83. Preferred it over Colorado at least 82. It's ok, average for current Weezer 81. Thought it was fine, surprised this wasn't on the 2022 YE instead since it spent barely any time in the actual 2023 year. 80. Sounds cool, but the car shots - just why 79. This one is fun, but it feels like they're appealing to pop in order to create another "Feel It Still" level hit. 78. Okay 77. The verses sounded better than the chorus 76. "Running out of pornstars" lyric lol 75. That music video was really cool 74. Watching I Prevail go from debuting with a Taylor Swift cover to being a band with major staying power on active is kinda neat. Also don't think that the Blank Space cover would go bottom 10 in the 2015 Active rankdown if it was redone. This Bad Things is still better than the one from MGK and Camilla 73. Not terrible, sounds kinda reminiscant of Ho Hey, and the singer is kinda cute 72. Definitely the best thing from AJR 71. Kinda ok, just odd
Tomorrow: I'm guessing Raw Raw, More Than Machines, ALL CAPS, Hollywood Baby, Down Here Waiting, Blame, Lost (BMTH), Sex Drugs Etc, and maybe Stick Season or Dial Drunk (or both), Sleepwalking, Those Eyes, Supernatural, Daytrippin, and In My Head could be eliminated.

85. Unlovable - Beach Weather/feat. Pale WavesThe original version is God awful. Let me explain my High Ranking for this version. Pale Waves. 84. All Time Low - Calm DownI liked it once it got more obnoxious and louder. 83. Milky Chance - Living In A Haze. These guys that sound like this don't have a chance on my list. 82. Weezer - RecordsThis fell drastically down my list from when it first came out. I even charted this, but the name dropping sounded worse and worse with each listen. Now I wish I had slotted it in my 70's. Rihanna, Lana and Nirvana. Right. Three acts that overcrowd my playlists. 81. Panic! At The Disco - Don't Let The Light Go OutI Knew you guys would let this light go out , so I'll quietly take a bullet for Brendon Urie's overthetop singing. 80. Chad Tepper/ feat. Dreamers - I Wanna Be Your HighPoor man's grunge music. This guy ranked higher than any Brendon Urie Over singing is just ridiculous. 79. Portugal. The Man - DummyDadadadadadada... .I rest my case. 78. Half * Alive - Did I Make You Up?Honestly I don't recall anything this band has done before, but based on this wonderjam I didn't care to search. 77. Neon Trees - Favorite DazeI guess refuse to step out of my 2000's music comfort zone. This is catchy, radio friendly and melodic, and one of my favorite songs of 2023, and that's that. 76. Letdown. - Crying In The ShowerThe guy's vocals are not my thing, but I really loved the Poppunk-like musical composition. Definitely a song I would upgrade if it had a better singer. 75. The Revivalists - KidI really liked "Wish I Knew You". I even have a fond memory of it, but I haven't cared for the music direction they have taken since. Including this borderline "Wilderness" jam here. 74. I Prevail - Bad ThingsA poor man's Linkin Park. If I'm not a fan of that band, can you imagine what I think of these guys? 73. Rosa Lin - SnapI prefer these kind of songs when sung by females. They just sound a lot more pleasant. 72. AJR - The Dumb SongI have always hated this guy's vocal tones. Needs some testosterone. I tried my best to drown it, but came across 14 songs I hated even more. 71. Declan Mckenna - SympathyI like this one. Reminds me a bit of those good "Clown" vibed songs The Beatles would put out. Still waiting for Noah Kahan "wilderness wonderjams" to appear.

If you tell me in 2021 that Weathers is going to have a top ten hit that lasts for 37 fucking weeks, I wouldn't believe it.
