Pulse Rankdown: 2023 Year-End Alternative Chart (complete)

You know how these OPs are usually really flashy? Well, since nobody stepped up to host this other than me, you're not getting all that glitz and glamour this year. No time for it! We're already late, so we just need to get this show on the road.

---

1) PM me (singingrulebritannia) your rankings of the top 100 Alternative songs of 2023. Rank the songs by your preference from #1 (best) down to #100 (worst).
2) An inverse point system will be used to determine the point total for each song. Song #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points... all the way down to #100 which gets 1 point.
3) The due date for submission is Tuesday, March 5 at 11:59PM ET.
4) ALL songs must be ranked.
5) To avoid sending me a list with extra lines, please click BBCode below the text box before you paste your list.
6) The rankings of each participant will be posted when a song is revealed during this Rankdown.
7) Please just copy & paste the formatting of the songs in this OP to make your rankings--if you don't I'll either demand you re-send the list or I'll reject it outright.
8) You can make changes to your list but try not to do so excessively. Edits will not be accepted after reveals start.

this was a much better year of songs for the Alternative rock format. There is even a Swedish Metal song that DIAMANTE covered on this list. My favorites Alt rock songs made the chart ,and I don't feel compelled to wanna squeeze 30 songs in my bottom tank.

The ancient scrolls foretold they would return one day...and that day has arrived. I have a BALLOT UPDATE for you to read! It's been 4 days since the rankdown opened, and 6 submissions have been counted: my own, as well as those of narp, zaclord 🌈, Steel Sponge, wheatsquares33, and Daryl the Beryl (Anthony / Eliza sent a mere minute before I hit post on this, and I prefer starting with an even 6, so her effects will be detailed in the next ballot update). Let's check in on how the results are progressing.

~ Only the bottom 6 have less than 100 points. Songs with 200 points start at #71, the top 50 all have least 300 points, the top 31 have 400 points, and 5 songs earned 500 points.
~ The only songs to never leave the top 10 are the top 2 and #7. Two songs have been #1, and the current #1 only just now jumped ahead of the initial #1 after Daryl's ballot. It leads #2 (the former #1) by a measly 2 points, but #2 has put 31 points of distance between it and #3. I'd usually mention one more fact in this line, but I'll save that for later.
~ The bottom 6 have been in every iteration of the bottom 10. Two songs have been last place--the song that started at #100 with NARP and I left that spot after Zaclord came in and is currently #98. #100 is 27 points behind #99, and already 122 points behind #90. #91 is a lot closer to #90, at 5 points away.
~ The three highest standard deviations are #6, #86, and #30. #100, #54, and #14 are the three lowest SDs.
~ And now, let's hear it for Pulse's favorite part of the ballot update...


As could be expected for the early stages, a large number of positions--11 of them--are resulting in ties. Ties can be found at #86, #82, #77, #74, #61, #44, #37, #32, #17, #13...and a pretty significant instance which we must SOUND THE ALARM for, as it comes at #10!

The "grr AJR" mantra doesn't apply the way it usually does for this rankdown. Truly demonstrates how wild of a year 2023 was, if seeing Metallica, I Prevail, and Ghost sharing space with 100 gecs, Hozier, and The National doesn't tell the story on its own.

And on top of a reminder, here's a fresh BALLOT UPDATE! I've attained 3 new submissions since the last update. I probably won't always be updating after 3--with as much participation as this rankdowns gets on average, that might result in Ballot Update overkill, and plus I might not always be at the computer every time the third list comes in, so more might arrive in the meantime and have to be covered. But 3 is the minimum, and if something particularly interesting has happened within those 3 submissions, that will give extra incentive to write about it.

Anyway, I mentioned Anthony / Eliza barely missed the last update, and she is now joined by Red and razorshark.

~ We're down to just 5 songs with less than 100 points, and even 1 song in the bottom 10 has at least 200 points. The top 55 have 400 points, the top 30 have 600 points, and the top 2 have 800 points.
~ Those same top 2 are also now the only songs to never leave the top 10, as the #7 from last update has fallen to the lower end of the top 20. We still have only had 2 #1 songs, but the first #1 took back its crown by 16 points after Razorshark's list. The lead #2 has over #3 has shrunk to 26 points. #10 is just 6 points ahead of #11.
~ The same 6 songs have never left the bottom 10, but they are now the bottom 5 and #93. The last place song has remained constant this update. However, the old #100 has now situated itself at #99 and is only 20 points ahead of it. #100 is 160 points behind #90, while #91 is only 1 point away.
~ The three highest standard deviations are #67, #48, and #9. The 3rd highest SD is the song that was the highest SD last update, but the other two are entirely different songs from the former 2nd and 3rd. #100, #1, and #96 are the three lowest SDs. The lowest SD is the same song, but you can probably tell from the positioning that the other two songs are not the same.

Haven't been following the charts since a year ago, but I still really want to do the rock rankdowns since it lets me catch up a bit. Plus I do get quite a few nice discoveries.

Knowing me, I'll probably get this in at the last minute. Gonna comment here to sorta commit myself regardless.

In the meantime, what are some of the big trends and happenings of 2023 regarding rock radio formats? Acts that had a glow up? acts that flopped hard? Assume I woke up from a year-long coma lol

The latest and greatest in BALLOT UPDATE-est will detail the effects of lyhom, gooberdude, wrip, and Gonza'90.

~ 2 more songs crossed the 100 point mark, leaving only 3 that haven't. The top 85 all have 300 points, the top 53 have 600 points, the top 25 have 900 points, and the top 6 have 1100 points.
~ Still 2 songs have never left the top 10, but the long-standing #2 in the early going fell to #4, and the current #2 only reached that spot after Gonza's ballot. The stable #1 is ahead of this new #2 by 34 points, and #2 is beating #3 by 21 points. #10 is 15 points ahead of #11.
~ The 6 songs to never leave the bottom 10 are the bottom 5 and #94. The battle between #100 and #99 remains close, as just 19 points separate them. #100's chances of making a miracle run out of the bottom 10 dwindle each update, as it is now 231 points behind #90, while #91 is 7 points away.
~ The three highest standard deviations are #69, #53, and #49. The highest SD is the same song that was the highest SD last update, but the previous 2nd highest SD moved to 3rd, and the 2nd highest SD is a new song. Meanwhile, the 3 lowest SDs are all the same songs--the only difference is that 2nd and 3rd place swapped. They are positioned at #100, #97, and #1.
