everything is on her side, all the major social/streaming platforms and radio stations are racing to suck up to Taylor and her fans - which is understandable, but still... Are we insinuating this wasn't the exact same case for Adele after the biggest album of the 21st century? I'll say it was a monumental moment for Adele, but Tay was still consistetly carrying.(she was on her 2nd million opening album at that point lol) 30's opening showed the fans were still there, but that break definitely showed the effect. Tay is just more consistent, and the fans show up everytime. Even more now with streaming and such lol.

I think what she did was miraculous, as I have alluded to many times, but I'm just not gonna sit here and pretend she wasn't absolutely huge going into 25 and wasn't set up for a monsterous opening given 21 had sold more albums than any other in the last 15 years at that point. She was a PHENOMENON going into 25 and was absolutely going to be embraced in all facets with open arms. Many were arguing she was bigger than Taylor at that stage, so I don't know how now Taylor had the advantage. lol Feels revisionist to me at least.

Can Taylor Swift do the impossible? Could her latest Republic rocket, THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT, soar into the rarefied air of 2 million+ in first-week activity? Numerous data-watchers are prepared to say she can.
In the streaming era, even a 1m+ debut is incredibly rare (yes, Taylor's Midnights bowed with 1.6m in 2022). A 2m opening is unheard of. But expanding the notion of what's possible has been La Swift's stock in trade over the past couple of years.
As you probably know, the new set was expanded to 31 tracks mere hours after its arrival in an "ANTHOLOGY" edition that will inevitably supercharge the already-frenzied consumption underway by Swifties. POETS quickly blew past Spotify and Amazon Music records for single-day album streams; expect more records to be set very soon.
For the time being, we'll content ourselves with reiterating that this thing is big. Very, very big.

Are they repeating themselves to stir up clicks or are people just re-posting the same thing?

A 2 million opening would not be surprising, and I'm expecting it to be higher.
I don't know if this project will have the longevity of Midnights or some of her other eras, but this should definitely be her biggest opening.

I mean if the Eras Tour continues to be the biggest cultural behemoth on pop culture, I can't see this album just dying; worst case scenario it doesn't reach the overall numbers of Midnights but it's still easily the biggest selling album of the year. It's not just gonna fade away. Look at folklore, which had no radio smashes and still can sneak up into top 15 with ease.

I don't think the album is particularly great, but it definitely has a handful of single options. And she has a dedicated, obsessive fan base that keeps her albums afloat. Will this be a Midnights/Cruel Summer reign? Nah. But I don't think it's gonna fly down the charts either.
It's about to be double platinum in week one, lol. It's already a hit quite frankly.

Are they repeating themselves to stir up clicks or are people just re-posting the same thing? HDD is making it as clear as humanly possible that doing 2M in today is its whole separate tier of achievement, and that it is not something comparable to the record set ~10 years ago when people still picked up CDs while doing their groceries. im sure the "failed to touch 25" comments will still appear in some segments of the internet, even though the music market under the CD era vs in the streaming era might as well be two different universes at this point.

I doubt this will have insane longevity. It’s not considered a masterpiece like Folklore nor does it have catchy songs to listen to separately like Midnights. It’s more like an epic poem to be read once than a playlist to be continuously consumed.

It’s more like an epic poem to be read once than a playlist to be continuously consumed. All Taylor albums have at least pretty good medium to long term longetivity since each album has millions of swifties whose it's their favorite album. evermore is constistently charting in the top 50s on billboard despite it being an album that underperformed. I don't think it will have a year long residency in the top 10 like Midnights but it still should hang around for awhile.

The total unit numbers might not be technically unprecedented, but the streams look like they will be. It averaged over 10M per track on Spotify Global, for a 31 track album...

DATE: With massive first-day numbers (313m global streams), Taylor Swift's TTPD now holds nearly every streaming record on Spotify. Tay now holds the biggest day for an album, song and more on Spotify. The platform announced on Saturday morning that TTPD became the first album ever to cross 300m streams in one day.
"Fortnight" f/Post Malone now holds the crown for the biggest global streaming day ever for a song on Spotify, with 25.2m streams. "Fortnight" also set a record in the U.S. with its #1 debut of 10.875m streams, surpassing the record held by Tay's "Anti-hero." 15 of Swift's 31 new songs opened with 10m+ global streams.
For those wondering, TTPD debuted with 127m more streams than Midnights' opening day.

Sorry for the double post, but does anyone know when billboard will post first day total units? I seem to remember we heard something about midnights' first 24 hours the next day but wasn't sure when

Its to early to predict SEA. TTPD should have a big drop bigger than Midnights since those high streams are unsustainable.

Insane numbers, I hope she manages to pass 2 miliion!
I assume she'll do 1.3-1.5 pure sales with 2-2.2 million total depending on streaming. It'll be interesting to see how big of a drop the album has in the coming days on streaming services and also how the order of the album tracks changes.

Yeah really wild numbers, so fun to track! Getting similar feels to that week 25 dropped, seeing the numbers trend up all week ha.
I think she knows this one may not be as consistent over time as Midnights (and potentially her other albums), so set all sights on a huge first week. That's my thought anyway.

Are we… even sure that Adele’s record is safe? Cause these numbers are… no words Yes because record breaking streams don't quite translate into a full million units yet. Even if it sells 2m pure copies, streaming fan't quite make the remaining gap into Adele's number. Still outstanding numbers.

I think HDD is afraid to predict a number or they're holding back their actual prediction. Didn't she do 2 million in pre orders alone?

Complementing this:
With expectations already sky-high for Taylor Swift’s THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT, the Republic megastar upped the ante when she decided to drop a secret double album at 2am on Friday. Based on first-day activity, it is clear that TTPD will debut north of 2m units, surpassing incredible opening weeks from 1989 (Taylor’s Version) and Midnights to become Tay’s biggest debut of her career.
By even the most conservative projections, TTPD will shatter the first-week streaming record held by Drake's Scorpion for nearly six years. The 31-track Anthology is projecting to more than 800m first-week streams, with upside. Scorpion opened in July 2018 with 746m on-demand plays. All-in first-day U.S. streams for TTPD topped a quarter of a billion while the album set a global record at Spotify with 314m opening day listens.
TTPD will be Swift’s seventh album to open at 1m+ and the third over 1.5m—the latter figures all occurring within the last two years. Not too shabby.
