Espresso up to 2.6m. Could definitely challenge for #1 after Fortnight or Too Sweet and has a clear path to #1 on pop.

Also does anyone know why daily streams are so much higher this year? Last year the only songs consistently around 2m for a few weeks were Flowers/Kill Bill/Last Night which were year defining hits. Now every week there is a new song easily crossing 1.8m. I think autoplay has gotten stronger this year.

I think "Guilty As Sin" was the projected #10 but "Too Sweet" overtook it yesterday on spotify and has extended its lead on spotify today. Which will likely increase again tomorrow. Along with meditations on past relationships featuring thinly veiled lyrical subjects, Taylor Swift’s blockbuster new album The Tortured Poets Department includes multiple tips of the cap to other recording artists, with Swift either expressing admiration or remembering a pivotal musical exchange. The most memorable name-check arrives on the title track, on which Swift sings, “You smoked, then ate seven bars of chocolate / We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist.”

As The Tortured Poets Department barrels its way toward the biggest debut sales of the year — and one of the biggest of all time — it’s worth wondering: is Swift’s Puth shout-out actually about to make the “Attention” singer a bigger artist? Yes and no, based on the early streaming returns. In the first three days of release of The Tortured Poets Department (Apr. 19-21), Puth’s catalog earned 3.26 million official on-demand U.S. streams, according to Luminate. That’s an increase from the previous weekend’s streaming total for Puth, but only slightly: from Apr. 12-14, his catalog earned 3.13 million streams, meaning that Swift’s stamp of approval bumped his streams a little under 4%.

While Puth was already scoring seven-figure streams prior to the lyrical reference, two artists that also received nods on the album saw their smaller streaming totals skyrocket. The veteran Philly pop-punk group The Starting Line enjoyed a hefty catalog bump after getting shouted out on “The Black Dog,” with 234,000 streams from Friday to Sunday representing a 55% uptick from the previous weekend (151,000 streams).

And when a Swift song starts out with the lines “Drowning in the Blue Nile / He sent me ‘Downtown Lights’ / I hadn’t heard it in a while,” as “Guilty as Sin?” does, chances are that streams for “Downtown Lights” are going to explode. Indeed, the Scottish pop-rock group the Blue Nile’s 1989 single “The Downtown Lights” rose from 3,000 streams from Apr. 12-15 to over 48,000 streams from Apr. 19-22 — a whopping 1,400% increase from one four-day tracking period to the next. – JASON LIPSHUTZ

"Too Sweet" is down at #20 on Apple Music, though, behind "Guilty As Sin." Also, "GAS" led by 3 million Spotify streams on Friday alone, so "Too Sweet" needs to lead by a lot the last few days of the chart week to even just make up for that 1 day. So, no, I don't think it will be close.

not an expert, but Hello debuted with around 1800 points, so I don't think Fortnight is close. Yes, 600 wasn't THAT MUCH back in the day, but Hello debuted with 61.6M streams (20M was the norm for #1 in 2015), 1,112,000 copies (when #1 songs had 200k-250k on average) and it was already #9 on radio.

You can’t look at charts from the last decades as a reference to how much ___ amount of points means in todays chart, cus Too much has changed:
1. iTunes sales is completely dead. It was normal to get 300k-700k downloads 10 years ago, now it’s it’s at 10-15k.
2. The points from sales was nerfed many times, as recently as last year and a half.
3. Radio stations’ impression reach has been reduced by as much as half
3. Radio points are several times nerfed also, as recently as one year ago.
4. Billboard used to count background noises player in TikTok videos as well, which could lead to a song racking up hundreds of points without nearly as much streams on Spotify and such.

The best way to determine how much a certain points is worth by today, is by looking back at 2020/2021-2023. Anything predating that might as well have been a different universe.

As far as I know, there are only 3 songs that have reached 600 points organically. (Excluded BTS & anti hero’s mass buys)

To complement this, 35.4M streams were from YouTube and 18.7M streams from Spotify. This was before Billboard instituted streaming tiers, which made YouTube video views count 2/3 of paid streams (as an ad-supported tier), with Spotify streams counting depending of whether they came from paid or ad-supported tiers. Also, the Hot 100 relative value of each component was quite different then, so it is quite hard to compare.

Yeah, agreed! Single sales in the late 80s and 90s would likely have been higher (maybe closer to 70s levels) had labels not progressively restrained their quantities. And regarding the TGIFY discussion, you are right that wider physical releases would have altered many singles' chart runs for sure.

On a mildly relevant note, just wanted to say that all this Rainbow-era talk made me re-add the David Morales remix of Can't Take That Away in heavy rotation, it's just gorgeous. And, really, one of the reasons Mariah sold so well with her physical singles is that most of them were events for her fanbase, as they'd feature high-budgeted remixes with completely re-recorded vocals and new, imaginative melody arrangements. In particular, her collaborations with David Morales spawned several masterpieces from the classic remixes of My All to the spectacularly dark Dreamlover remix. And let us not forget the all-time-classic O.D.B. remix of Fantasy. And she has so many more, she really revolutionized remix culture in the 90s. Wish contemporary artists would adopt a similar approach tbh!!

And to get back on topic:

Taylor's Fortnight gained another 3.65M AI to reach 24.31M, great numbers. I'd like to see how this will rise after the rolling effect. I feel it will definitely be a Pop #1 given the high publicity that Taylor is experiencing right now. HAC and AC should follow suit. But what I really wanna see is radio picking up ICDIWABH.

To me that’s proof that they saw the chart in a certain “prestige” light, or wanted it to be seen that way anyways.

I feel like before the chart was always setup in a way that you go back and look at a week in say, August 2007 or whatever, and you can look at the top ten and have a decent idea of “ok, these were the popular songs “of the time.” Not just of that one weekly moment in time. Obviously exceptions, but again I’m not arguing for billboard to find away to entirely eradicate flash in the pan songs either. I know those will always happen no matter what. I’m not even arguing for a return to some kind of “singles only” policy.

Just to me, there is very much a feasible way that the chart can be somewhat “one week wonder” proof’d again that would return it to being more of a representation of “what were the most popular songs of their day” sort of chart again. If Billboard and others don’t agree that’s what the chart should be now and think one single weekly instance is all that matters in popularity representation, then obviously my suggestion is no good at all.

…how is this sus? It's a moderately popular artist who's song is getting a lot of TikTok power slightly outstreaming the biggest non-Taylor song. That's like the modal path for a song rising to number one these days.

It's been a while since a popstar not named Taylor Swift popped up like this that some people think it's weird.
