I’ll say it again: this era would have been insane with proper hit bait like all of her other pop albums. Radio absolutely still wants to give TSUs to her songs, they’re just waiting for her to release something made for the charts and it’s shooting to #1.

Bring back pre-release singles please!!! With MVs and proper promo. I really miss these days. I get that not releasing any singles does wonders for her first day/week numbers but it's definitely less engaging for the fans in the long run. Perhaps she will go back to this strategy for her next album, since she probably won't top the astronomical debut of TTPD. Come to think of it, Lover had a great rollout, songs aside. And that's why it felt like a proper era, although it lasted less than a year.

She will never recapture that level again though, and I do think TTPD era has brought her back down more to super star level from supernova in terms of the general public. She will need to rely more on the songs themselves hitting next era.

I'm of the strong opinion that there is nothing wrong with TTPD's material or that it isn't catchy enough for it to have had better singles performance, YET (remember a couple more songs could still be released that could do well. It's been six months since the album was released, the same time after which Midnights was released and before Karma hadn't yet fully taken off). It might not be as catchy as say 1989 or much of her previous work, and a bit more album-oriented, but it's still solidly a pop record and there are definitely at least a few tracks that would work well at radio.
The problem is the timing and choice of singles they released so far, the fact that there were no album pre-release singles, and the fact that the marketing focused heavily on album performance for pretty much the first three months. And then in terms of the first single choice, most people can definitively say that Fortnight is NOT one of the catchy or even one of the better songs on the album, so that first and foremost is a head-scratcher why they even chose it as a single at all, let alone the first, and it only did decently because the first single from a Taylor Swift album always will. ICDIWABH was actually a very good follow-up choice, the problem was that they simply waited too long to release it - three months after the album release, by which time many, many people had either already bought the album or streamed it, along with all the other album tracks, to death. Thus, all other songs will face this struggle if they choose to release them as singles, but like I said, the focus was more on album performance this era, so if her team is ok with that at the cost of lower-performing singles, I guess that is the decision they have made.

I know everyone is craving a docuseries about the Eras Tour and the rerecordings, but I want one where she and her label unpack how decisions around an album are made. How do you decide if a song makes the cut or not? How is the track order chosen? Who designs all the lyric videos on YouTube?
And most importantly, why is the first single almost always a spice pick? Me? Fortnight? We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together? I've convinced myself they want something jarring or meme-able on purpose to capture attention, but I feel like there's always a better song on the album if they wanted to go that route.

In reference to the "spice" pick for leads, people have noted that Taylor loves to go in the opposite direction of what people are expecting from her. Which, imo, is sometimes disheartening when you just simply want more of the same pop bangers. lol

Which, imo, is sometimes disheartening when you just simply want more of the same pop bangers. lol That isn't what she does. Instead she just usually just picks the most catchy song, radio friendly even if it's annoying to be the lead. and it was pattern from red until lover and got ditched after me! flopped so hard it that it endangered her career. with streaming being more important to her than radio, her strategy has shiftesuccess.d drastically. now she can release less catchy, slower songs as her lead singles since she knows releasing the album all at once will cause massive hype and the lead single plays a much less important role towards her TTPD really didn't have one of those songs so we got fortnight. TTPD wasn't an album designed to have smash singles and that's fine. it's performance has still been ridiclous for Taylor with it doubling the units of it's nearest competitor. I love "I can do it with a broken heart" but its sound and energy is too different from the rest of the album to work as a lead single. releasing any of the songs before the album would have just severly reduced the album's opening numbers because of how non smashy all the songs are. singles are intended to promote the album not vice versa. neglecting the singles for the album is the right choice.

If Taylor went back to releasing a pre-single on her future albums, she'd likely get 2 Number One singles on the Billboard Hot 100. One pre and one the week of her album releases. It would be an easy way for her to get 2 new number ones back-to-back. Not that she needs to get them, but she is a chart lover and doing this would get her more #1s.

There really is not accounting for taste, but I find it puzzling that some people find "Fortnight" to be a 'bad' song or towards the bottom of the album. Same thing for "Slut!", when people here said it was one of her worst songs *ever* (are you smoking cr*ck?). Just because it's an odd single choice doesn't mean it's not a great song.
That being said, this woman has always struggled with single choices (no need to rehash specifics, as we've all done many, many times). I do think after a break (feels like maybe one is coming?), she is still in a good position to have a strong launch for the next album's first single. Whatever backlash there was for TTPD is probably 90% Twitter complaints. I doubt she will ever go back to a pre-release single model, since it boosts first week hype so much to wait and that seems to be her ultimate priority.

I think ‘Anti-Hero’ is wildly radio friendly! I think Anti-Hero is that rare combination of radio candy, as well as super smart and intense. Cruel Summer is another example. Most artists only get one song on that level in their careers. Taylor has been lucky enough to have several, but certainly not each of her albums have one of these types of songs.

Saying Me! was catchier than CS is one of the most bizarre takes I’ve heard in a hot minute…
Catchy does not equal annoying and grating for the record. Those are two different things entirely.
As for her other leads since 1989, she’s done a decent job with the choices that weren’t Rep and Lover I suppose. So mostly I guess she does ok, really just those two eras. And 1989 TV if we count the fact that fans ended up picking the lead single when she was clearly leaning towards Slut (lol what a radio bomb that woulda been).

Yeah to deny the fact that "Anti-Hero" is an catchy, infectious earworm from the first listen is kind of weird.
Me! on the other hand looks and sounds like one but the more you listen you can't help but dislike it. Like on first listen back in the day we were all relived it was kind of happy and lively after reputation got a relatively muted response. But the minute people actually started paying attention... ew.
There are no songs on the level of AH radio readiness on folklore, evermore or TTPD, which is also why it's the three eras were she and her team clearly gave little to no fucks about CHR.

Where was this listening party, because I remember a lot of people being horrified upon initial listen and slamming it immediately, myself included. I'll never forget being on the phone with my fiance at the time watching it as it premiered and me just watching in stunned silence. 😂
