The first song from the band that really impressed me, tbh. Ranked it very high on my list for the 2023 Alt rankdown. #48: Nothing but Thieves - Overcome

My favorite song from the most recent Corinne Bailey Rae album is, unfortunately, one of the shortest. Ngl, I think I would've appreciated the album more if it had more songs like this. #47: Corinne Bailey Rae - New York Transit Queen

Certainly not the best thing CHVRCHES has done, but it's earned a spot on my top 50 due to be one of the songs I've re-listened to most that year. #46: CHVRCHES - Over

The HIRS Collective was technically my introduction to grindcore. Their collaboration with Melt-Banana, a Japanese band whose last major release was all the way back in 2013 before announcing their newest album for August 2024, was the album's main highlight for me. #45: The HIRS Collective featuring Melt-Banana - XOXOXOXOXOX

Sorry Taylor, but it looks like the competition was too fierce for you to snag an instant spot on the top 10. May not be a big loss for any of the rankers here, but it actually is a big loss for me, surprisingly. #44: Taylor Swift featuring Hayley Williams - Castles Crumbling

Ending the set with another big loss from me, and it's a purely instrumental rock song. Despite Rolling Stone's disputable top guitarists list (Matt Bellamy got robbed), Covet quickly became one of my favorite discoveries over the course of 2023 (and their most recent album would be among my top albums of the year as well). #41: Covet - firebird

Corinne Bailey Rae going punk is unexpected & weird & like...technically not GREAT, but I still think New York Transit Queen is a fun track, I do like it.
We're Still Here was one of my most listened to albums of 2023, so it's cool to see here (and XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO is my favorite song from it, so it's really cool that was the pick).
Love Yvette Young & Covet, so I guess I'm a bit partial to Firebird even though it's far from the best thing they've done (I think this is the one I charted for the period of like 2 weeks I had a chart last year lol)

#50: hard rock and heavy metal can be very enjoyable but I'm struggling to enjoy Metalcore when it involves a lot of shouting and screaming
#49: this song has good moments and other moments that don't really hold my attention and sadly I haven't seen the movie
#48: this was in Summertime Madness last year when I was co-hosting and I prefer NBT's other recent singles
#47: this song could have stood out more if it lasted longer
#46: this was in March Madness last year and it's on the low end of being enjoyable
#45: Grindcore is a genre I haven't taken seriously but I have heard songs by Melt-Banana that I really enjoy
#44: this is a pleasant Tay-Tay song and uh... what happened here Swifties?!
#43: not a big fan of MUNA but I do enjoy this more than other MUNA songs I've heard in Pulse games
#42: another song that was in March Madness last year and one that grew off me slightly
#41: I am happy to support good instrumental music and while there are pleasant guitar sounds on this I think it's missing a more catchy and memorable melody

HONORABLE MENTIONS EXTRAS #1:
The National - Space Invader
The band's two most recent albums in general didn't really interest me, but I was impressed with one of the songs they've released that year. Would've actually been my #50 if I didn't choose to swap it out with "Ceilings."
Allie X - Black Eye
Definitely one of my most painful cuts from my list. Would've put it in there if I had discovered it before I finalized it.
Chappell Roan - Red Wine Supernova
But of course, while I'm still on the topic of painful cuts, here's this song.
Armand Hammer featuring Cavalier - I Keep a Mirror in My Pocket
billy woods had released under album, but under the Armand Hammer duo (alongside Elucid). Diabetic Test Strips was one of my AOTYs for 2023, but I figured one billy woods song was enough for my top 50 songs list.
Ruston Kelly - Michael Keaton
Ruston Kelly also had one of my favorite albums of the year, but I wasn't able to make room for one of his songs on my list. "Michael Keaton" is the best track IMO.
Queens of the Stone Age - Paper Machete
This song was ranked as my #1 on the 2023 Alternative Airplay year-end rankdown. Surprisingly not my absolute favorite track given that "Negative Space" is on the rankdown instead. Would've included this on my list if it weren't for my 'one song per artist' rule.
Metro Boomin, A$AP Rocky, and Roisee - Am I Dreaming
My favorite song from Across the Spider-Verse was a toss-up between "Hummingbird" and this one in particular.
TesseracT - War of Being
One of the contenders for the list was, of course, an 11 minute long progressive metal song. TesseracT also released one of my favorite albums of 2023.
FIFTY FIFTY - Cupid
At one point, a K-Pop song had a chance in actually making my list.
Sufjan Stevens - Will Anybody Ever Love Me?
Finishing this set with a critically acclaimed song from an otherwise critically acclaimed album & artist that I will admit that I respect a lot more than I enjoy.

So, interesting little fact: I found out about slowthai's abuse allegations while I was listening to his third album, which certainly left a sudden bad taste for me. I would give it a second listen because I felt like there was something I'm missing and I'm glad I did that, because the album would actually grow on me, with "Yum" being his most harrowing performance to date (Still doesn't quite undo what he did outside of his music though). #40: slowthai - Yum
