She was not a 1 hit wonder to begin with regardless. Fancy and Black Widow were all top 5 hits. Beg For It was also a minor hit as well. |

"Thong Song" by Sisqo, a huge career-defining hit obviously. But nobody could take him seriously after that, even Dru Hill went down with the ship. And don't come at me with "Incomplete," nobody remembers that song. It rode on "TS"'s coattails and was largely a hit because "TS" was the b-side and had never previously been given a physical release.

I don’t really like that the term one hit wonder gets thrown around so much. There are many acts out there who truly only had one hit, one and done. The term should be reserved for them only.

I completely agree, it's frustrating. Many "one hit wonders" had two, three, four, five or more hits! Some of them just as big or almost as big as the hit most people remember. I hate when people justify calling these people one hit wonders because "Nobody remembers their other hits". Whether or not the other hits are remembered isn't relevant to the fact that they were hits and shouldn't take away from that. |

A variation of this thread comes up every once and a while and every time it does, people list songs that really don't apply, as if every artist who's had a downturn or slump in their career can be lumped down to one song and it really can't. "Intuition" can certainly work. "Blurred Lines", "J Christ" even "Unholy" potentially. But "Filthy"? "Big Hoops" Any Iggy song? Nah. Popularity is going to fade. A song can not catch on or be a hit, sure, but to say they wrecked careers? Bit of a stretch. "Hello Kitty" could have worked except it came when she was already pretty much done having hits anyway. Plus, after that album Avril caught lime disease and didn't record for years. She had a decent era a few years back and is on a fairly successful Greatest Hits tour so it couldn't have ruined her career that much.

Ashlee Simpson - it was the SNL debacle, not the music. A variation of Billy Squire's downfall - it was the video to 'Rock Me Tonight' not the song.
Katy Perry - 'Chained to the Rhythm' dug the grave ... Bon Appetit/Migos/Video was the dirt.
Black Eyed Peas - 'The Time (Dirty Bit)' Yes, the rush-released follow-up 'Just Can't Get Enough' was major, but that was the end.
Gwen Stefani - 'Wind it Up'. Another rush-released huge follow-up:'The Sweet Escape' but that probably had a lot to do with Akon, who was hot at that exact moment. Done.
Garth Brooks maligned Chris Gaines project really did end his days as the King of Country radio.

I think we need to wait for Lil Nas X's next "era" before we declare "J Christ" to be a career killer, or even a "jump the shark" type moment. (Five years ago some were speculating that "Old Town Road" would make him a one hit wonder.) Same for Sam Smith and "Unholy"--and let's remember that he's been a big name for a decade now, so even if that is so he's had a good run, and at least that supposed wrecker was a massive hit. Jewel's "Intuition" maybe--while I can see her wanting to diversify from her image as a folkie poet, going all the way into dance pop may have seemed too much like commercial bandwagon jumping.
And I agree with those who criticise the redefintion of a "one hit wonder", which increasingly seems to be "one hit that the big radio and media conglomerates keep playing a lot", even if they had several other major hits at some previous time.

Kiiinda...his reputation took a big hit, but also, he has been on The Masked Singer, which has been running for ELEVEN seasons and counting. I feel like Blurred Lines was his biggest hit, at least on the pop charts. Robin was never a massive artist anyway, as he was content being one of the best modern R&B singers and having the respect from the Black community. |
