Chappell, charli, and Billie all have an embarrassment of riches right now.
Billie has two hit songs all around, with wildflower and guess looking like viable radio singles to be pushed
Charli has her first radio hit in year but also has Apple and guess showing momentum.
I could see hot to go, red wine supernova , and pink pony club all being radio hits as well.
I hope many of these songs get their chances to be fully pushed singles, it really helps with longevity.
I wonder if Sabrina will have a similar dynamic when her album drops.

Charli XCX’s ‘Guess’ Aiming for Big Hot 100 Bow After Streaming Boom
Among the many tidings of Brat Summer has been the return of Charli XCX as a fixture on the Billboard Hot 100, a full decade after she helped engineer top 10 hits like Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy,” Icona Pop’s “I Love It” and her own “Boom Clap.” Brat hits like “360” (No. 44) and “Apple” (No. 66) have been climbing the chart after achieving varying states of virality, while the Lorde-assisted remix of “Girl, So Confusing” powered the song to No. 63 upon its June release.
Those tracks have yet to crack the chart’s top 40 – but “Guess,” which is featured on the deluxe edition of Brat, almost certainly will next week. That’s largely thanks to Billie Eilish hopping on the track for the bonus cut’s remix — capturing the attention of the Internet with lyrics like “Charli likes boys, but she knows I’d hit it,” as well as for Eilish joining Charli on a mountain of underwear in the new version’s official music video (10,000 pairs of which were donated to the charity I Support The Girls following the video shoot).
Following the release of the song and video last Thursday (Aug. 1), streams for “Guess” exploded: in its first four full days of tracking (Aug. 2-5), the song scored 12.27 million official on-demand U.S. streams, according to Luminate, after earning just 651,000 streams during the same period the previous week (July 26-29) prior to the remix release. Meanwhile, Eilish’s “Guess” appearance is pumping up the other Brat songs around it, with the album (minus “Guess”) up 12% in streams over that same period (from 23.3 million streams to 26.2 million). Don’t be shocked if “Guess” crashes the top 20 of the Hot 100 next week — and if Brat stays strong in the top 10 of the Billboard 200. – JASON LIPSHUTZ

is it just me or does it really feel like it's the beginning of a post-Drake world? Nothing he released since the beef did any numbers whatsoever, and he's been on a couple of songs since then, and it feels like FATD just completely came and went. Obviously we'll be able to assess his situation only once he releases a new project but I'm seriously starting to doubt that it'll be near his previous releases. While the Drake fans are still his fans it seems as though everyone else turned away from him and the regular listeners aren't going to be as eager to check out his new stuff as the used to be

Drake just put this 100gigs for your headtop website up which has three new songs on it. We'll see if any of those hit general streaming soon.

Deadpool & Wolverine resurrecting this song is just one of the crimes the MCU must pay for.

I'm sorry but rebranding their iconic #3 hit into “Bye Bye Bye (from Deadpool And Wolverine Soundtrack)” is still so lame and funny lmaoooo. EDIT: Whoops, apparently it only hit #4 lol. Feels much more like a #1 hit than their actual chart topping single. From what I remember, the song was never physically released and charted solely on airplay. Otherwise it would certainly have topped the chart.

Otherwise it would certainly have topped the chart. Yeah it was a 10 week #1 on Top 40 radio, but it wasn't released commercially. I am sure their rabid fans would have bought enough singles for it to be a huge #1, but a lot of labels at that time wanted to drive fans to buy the album instead. Maybe the sales of the album would have taken a big hit if "Bye Bye Bye" was available as a single. It's still odd to me they didn't at least release like 400k copies of the single to get it a week or two at #1, though. There were a lot of limited singles at that time. For the record, the #1 songs when "Bye Bye Bye" was top 5 on the Hot 100 were "Say My Name" and "Maria Maria," so those songs would have been its main competition. Both had commercial singles, of course.

As someone who wasn't around at this time, how sales for a commercial single work? Did they have just that one song in stores or did you buy a whole album?

Buy the single or the whole album if it was available. Back in the day you really could only buy the current top 40 and once a single dropped below the store would stop selling it

Or would they just stop restocking after a while? I never saw singles in stores too often but I also didn’t live near a record store until 2002 so when I did see them stocked, they never had a lot of selection or a lot of copies for a single. But yeah, typically a single would be available on a CD with another track (the b-side) or several tracks, a couple live recordings, or if it were a maxi-single, a bunch of remixes. I really miss CD singles.

Not Like Us' reign is over and for once not by a big debut. After 18 weeks of slow building momentum, Chappell Roan tops the charts with Good Luck, Babe!, which was up 3.6% from last week. Congratulations are in order for Chappell's first ever #1 as a lead. And not far behind it is BIRDS OF A FEATHER which also reached a new peak of #2 as it was up 0.82%. Not Like Us fell back all the way to #4 with a 15.99% decrease in streams. Who actually held better and whether you think its legitimate or not, it only saw a miniscule 1.99% drop from last week. But we've also got a new song entering the top 10 and with a bunch of hype and collaborating with a big pop act, Charli XCX finally has another proper global smash as Guess debuts with 11.5M in America. And the good times continue for pop fans as Chappell Roan's HOT TO GO! re-enters the Top 10 with a 23.6% boost in streams.
Royel Otis' cover of Linger fell 18.5% as Iris dropped 15.58%, the latter just doesn't seem to have the momentum that Bye Bye Bye has off of Deadpool & Wolverine. And Ice Spice's Did It Again had a harsh fallback of 19.82%. The biggest drop however came for Guy for That which collapsed with a 26.62% fall, showing more and more that Post's pivot into country has really only hit with I Had Some Help. It's a bit concerning considering his album drops in a few weeks.
Surprisingly, even with a day late release, Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign's second album this year completely BOMBED. With only four songs making the weekly charts totalling to 14.9M on first week, this is by far the worst debut for a Kanye album. It seems like the backlash has finally caught back up. And what's equally ironic is that Charli XCX's BRAT managed to outstream him even with just 3 songs, not even counting the Guess remix.
Besides Kanye's album, and the continued hype for Charli and Chappell, we got a unique collaboration between A$AP Rocky and singer-songwriter Jessica Pratt, and a comeback single for NAV underperform. In terms of gains, Big Dawgs continues its momentum with its continued virality, as does Bye Bye Bye although it looks like it's slowing down, WILDFLOWER actually is seeing a ressurgence off of a live performance by Billi, august expectedly saw a boost seeing as we're in its titular month, and the continued hype for Charli and Chappell has extended to their deepcuts, with Chappell scoring a new peak week for The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.

You'd have the option. Buy the single or the whole album if it was available. Back in the day you really could only buy the current top 40 and once a single dropped below the store would stop selling it Would they? Or would they just stop restocking after a while? I never saw singles in stores too often but I also didn’t live near a record store until 2002 so when I did see them stocked, they never had a lot of selection or a lot of copies for a single. But yeah, typically a single would be available on a CD with another track (the b-side) or several tracks, a couple live recordings, or if it were a maxi-single, a bunch of remixes. I really miss CD singles. I used to buy CD singles, and from what I remember, all of big general stores here (Big W, K-Mart, Target) would have a dedicated section for CD singles in their entertainment department. Same for dedicated music/entertainment stores like Sanity and JB Hi-Fi (and those places would have the largest selection on offer because of the nature of those businesses). If they had stock, it was on the floor. I have to imagine the way it worked here would be pretty similar to how it worked in the States, but no there was no cap on what singles were available based on where they charted. Just imagine something being only available for a week because it tanked upon release, and then just became unavailable with no chance to improve because its opening position sucked. I mean this was the era where songs would typically start low and build to their eventual peak rather than today's model of trying to shoot as high as possible and keep everything crossed you stick the landing. The one difference I think you would find between the US vs. other territories would be that CD singles would exist for songs that were airplay-only in the US, because international charts (like ours) were purely sales-based with airplay a chart non-factor. That is, if those singles were even released internationally.

But yeah you'd have to be able to buy singles below the top 40 otherwise how would they be able to climb the chart

I'd imagine the availability of physical singles (and albums) would be based on the simple laws of supply and demand, and for singles only, combined with deleting them from the market after a certain time if they wanted to increase album sales and thus the bottom line.
Obviously, it would seem supply and demand would be easier for an up-and-coming artist because they would start off really low and only make incremental increases most of the time (unless there was maybe some major precipitating event or major promotion that made them burst onto the scene really strongly). It seems with established artists, especially with first week numbers, it's much harder to determine how many copies to ship out. Sometimes there would be an over-calculation, and a million or so units would be shipped out initially and go platinum right away, but actually end up selling far less than that million.
Interestingly, with physical singles, I kind of got into popular music at the tail-end of when they were still available, and would often get the urge to buy a certain song I became familiar with, but because I was usually a few months behind the curve, they would often be unavailable when I went to the store due to low stock or complete deletion from the market.
