I like IIDLY a lot more, I do think this song kind of has a weird structure and never takes off, but hearing Carrie’s low register was really pretty and I enjoyed that. Still hoping this does become a hit
The structure is interesting!
I feel like most writers would have put the guitar interlude after the second chorus instead of before and then lead into the last verse before a final chorus (where there would be more room for “bombast” or “a vocal moment” — I’m actually fine with this song not having a standout note or moment, because I find their voices to sound so rich and emotive in each line they sing and it gives the song a sweet, quiet sincerity.)
Yeah, I like the structure because having the instrumental break where it is actually keeps the song from being too stagnant for me. That break comes as a release, then we get back to the chorus. Then the third (well, really fourth) verse has the production drop back so it stands out more. I understand people who want 'a moment' (especially from Carrie), but the understated nature of the duet makes it feel like people reciting their wedding vows or something.
My one (minor) complaint about the song is that the melody of the verses is stronger than the melody of the chorus. I get the verses stuck in my head more so than the chorus, and I like the lyrics on the verses better, too. In other words, I wish the chorus hit harder.
I really hate how slow country radio moves these days. I hope this is a hit for them, but I don't have the patience to wait around and find out. Plus, country radio hits don't feel genuine anymore regardless. This one consistently being higher on Country Songs than in airplay tells me the audience likes it.
