I am having a problem. I have decided that every song that enters my chart from now on will count towards 2004 because i really think it's unfair for songs to have split chart runs in between two years. My dilemma is that i don't know if i should count Outkasts "Hey Ya" towards this year, or next year. If the song stays in my top ten for 13 weeks then it goes Recurrent and so far it's on Week 3, meaning if it stays on it will go recurrent in early January. Do you think i should wait until that song finishes it's chart run so i can post my year end chart in early January, or do most of you guys have December count towards next year and end up posting your year end chart in December? I would like to know what the majority of you do. Does your Year end count from January through December, or December through November?

I count any song that hit my chart in my 52-week period, and don't hold songs that haven't peaked yet over to the next year. In 2001, the first year of my chart, my 52 weeks all fell in the calendar year, but in 2002, I decided to cut the year short to 49 weeks so I could use a December-November year this year (2003).

My chart runs from the first Saturday in January to the last Saturday in December. My year-end chart is compiled right after the last chart of the year.

I usually cut my chart year off a couple weeks before the end of the year. This year, I'm going from December 29, 2002 to December 14 or 21, 2003 (haven't decided yet). I don't hold over any points into the following year for songs that are split between the 2 years; as a result, some songs miss out.

If you're going to count points from both years, it's not a year-end chart. It's a two-year-end chart. I go from January to December. I'll probably post my year-end chart on Christmas Eve this year.

I always calculate my year end chart after the 3rd week in december. So I only miss out one week. Songs unfornuately can make a year end chart one year and the next too because of their chart run being staggered between two years.

My chart runs from the first Friday in January to the last Friday in December (happy Kwanzaa!!), with my yearend chart posted around New Year's Day. May or may not freeze the last chart of the year, depends on how busy I am.

Agreed with Rebirth. Doesn't make much sense of making a yearend chart if you aren't going to make it reflect the year, does it?
I make mine usually when there are two Saturday's left for the year. Those two weeks are frozen so I can have time to make and post my yearend chart. This year, my last chart will be made for the week dating December 13th and it will be made December 6th (or sometime thereafter). The next two charts will be frozen based on the 13th chart but the points will be included in the yearend chart, which will come out in two parts on the weekends of the 20th and 27th. The first chart of the new year will be released on the weekend of the 27th. I do my chart one week in advance from the date so that's why there may be a slight confusion.

My chart year runs from the Friday after the winter solstice to the Friday after the winter solstice the next year. For the 2003 chart year then, the weeks will be from December 27, 2002 to December 26, 2003.

My year-end chart goes from January to December, and only the part of the chart run existing in a given calendar year is considered for the year-end chart.

I do it from first week in January to the the last week of December. But I don't carry points over to the next year the points that the song would have currently would only count for the 2003 year end chart. Every song on the chart from the first week of January starts over with 0 Points and gets new points for that week and so on for the 2004 year end.

My chart runs from the first Saturday in January to the last Saturday in December. My year-end chart is compiled right after the last chart of the year. Exact same situation here, except my year-end is compiled as the year goes on.

Exact same situation here, except my year-end is compiled as the year goes on. As is mine. I have absolutely no patience to go through 50+ charts of 50 songs each and give out points at the end of December.

As is mine. I have absolutely no patience to go through 50+ charts of 50 songs each and give out points at the end of December. Nor do I (I did that last year and it blew). Still, I like keeping the element of surprise somewhat, so what I'm doing this year is keeping a list of every charted song, with their weekly positions listed below them (updated weekly). I still have to add up all the points come December, but it's not as tedious as having to look through a year's worth of charts for every song.

I also enter my charts in the week I make them... it's double efficient since the template I use to update my website is in the same spreadsheet as I use to tally up my cumulative totals.

Thanks you guys! I have decided to count Outkast towards this year, and my year end chart will run through Early Janaury (The week of December 29th-January 4th will count towards 2003)

Exact same situation here, except my year-end is compiled as the year goes on. I should clarify it then as I create the year-end chart after the last chart of the year. I keep track of each song's chart run and compile points after the song falls off the chart. The only songs I compile before the year-end chart are the ones still on at the cut-off date. I'm definitely with you guys in that I wouldn't have the time to go through all 52 weeks at once.

For my chart, I've giving up on the year-end chart concept.
I was thinking of doing an year-end chart all year long but it's too tedious to one for my chart (note: I have a 200-position chart). Also, it was to find a fair system that I could wholeheartedly support.
If I went by points, songs that have a lot of weeks could outweigh those songs with higher peaks. For example, a song that has been on for the whole year but stayed at the lower echelon of the chart will outweigh a song that went to #1 but was only on the chart for half the year.
If I went by peaks, I would feel like I have the same problem. Peaks will outweigh weeks. A #1 song that was only in the top 40 for 10 weeks could outrank a #2 song that was in the top 40 for 30 weeks.
Also, there is the problem of songs that fall into multiple year-end chart periods. If a song starts going in the later part of the year and continues on into the next year, it's like the song is penalized for arriving at the wrong time.
I can't find an efficient system that I think I would approve of so I decided not to do one. So, to compensate, I'm gonna focus on providing chart stats of all of the songs so people can judge for themselves which songs were the best performing. I have a crazy chart anyway which songs go through fast and songs stay on a long time. Therefore, it's really impractical for my chart to have a year-end chart and to be fair at the same time to all songs.

I do one after the 50th weekly chart is released, and to address the problem of songs being dissected by the year-end cutoff, I make an all-time chart every year in July (the month I started recording personal charts).

[quote author=The Rebirth Experience As is mine. I have absolutely no patience to go through 50+ charts of 50 songs each and give out points at the end of December.[/quote]
I love that process! I wait til the very last Saturday in December before I start compiling the points. Not tedious at all for me and takes me one evening. I love the element of surprise even tho some years it's pretty obvious what's going to be on top.
This year I thought was going to be an easy guess but suddenly there are a few contenders for #1 but I won't find out til the end of next month.
As for those unfortunate songs that straddle years...too bad..lol. But I also have an ongoing all time chart that I update at the end of every year that would address that issue, at least in terms of comparing them to other songs.
And obviously, I haven't got the quoting thing down either..lol
