I'm just starting to form a personal chart and am wondering what y'all do about songs that were released a long time ago but you just discovered them.
It would be good to chart them because then it would be an accurate representation of what I was listening to at the time....but then it would affect the contintity of the chart.

If I like it enough. I have many songs from the second Harvey Danger album, which was released 3 years ago. However, it's just way too good to ignore. Whereas, no songs existed on the first one that I liked enough to put on the charts 5 years after the original release.

In the end, it's really up to you. I tend not to debut songs that are older than a few months, unless it's gaining popularity on a national scale. Of course, this doesn't keep songs from staying on my chart as they grows older (the record for a song staying in my top 50 is just over nine months).

It depends. Usually I look to see if the song is still hanging around on any charts around the world. If it's not on any chart, I won't chart it. So if it's still on the Club Play chart or the UK chart, I'll chart it.
Songs that I won't chart are songs that were released in the US a long time before they were released in another country. I feel like I missed my chance.
Finally, if it's on a chart but isn't a radio single, I won't chart it. The only time I will is if it's an artist that releases songs exclusively to the clubs. For instance, I did not chart Whitney Houston's "Love That Man" because she had radio singles and that was a club only single. My other side rule is if it's not a single but still makes the Hot 100 on a lot of radio play [Missy's "Pussycat"], I'll chart it though those songs usually won't peak as high as they would have had it been an official single.

Usually if I discover a song late, I won't chart it unless it's on some official chart.

Depends. I charted Sophie Ellis Bextor's 'Murder On The Dancefloor' in May 2003 because I didn't want to miss out on it.
Basically though, if you discover a song late and chart it late, it still represents your music listening at the same. So I suppose I would say, yes I do. I wouldn't if a song was over a year old but if the situation arose, I probably would chart it... unless the artist had a new song already released that I liked too.

If a song is new to me and I like it, I'll probably chart it, even if it's been around for awhile. However, if it gets to a year old or so, or has been off all charts for several months, I probably won't, though there are exceptions. Obviously an exception was made for songs from Blue's first album, All Rise, but I rationalized that it was probably new to most Americans, anyway, since it was never available in the US to my knowledge. I was considering charting some songs from Donell Jones' last album that I bought a few months ago, but it was already close to 2 years old, and thus seemed out of place.

As a rule, I usually don't... earlier this year, though, I charted Taproot's "Poem" for two weeks because I heard a friend of mine sing it karaoke and I really liked it.

I don't care how long a song has been out. I am still charting "HIt The Freeway" by Toni Braxton because I missed out on it when it was first released.

It doesn't happen often but it did happen with my current #1 www.geocities.com/tunedon/tunedontop30.htmlThe last time it happened was in 1999 when Chris Isaak's Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing was revived due to inclusion in the movie Eyes Wide Shut. It got to #2 on my chart (though I loved it back in 1995 when it was originally released, I wasn't doing an Internet chart then).

Depends on how old the song is, and how popular it is at the moment...I recently added "Get Low" to my countdown, which isn't exactly a new song, but is still getting decent airplay on the radio (especially Z100) and is still pretty much a current song...
If I were to suddenly become a fan of say Simple Mind's "Don't You Forget About Me", that has no chance of charting because, well, it's just about two decades old...

Four months at most. One exception, though, was my charting of Jennifer PeΓ±a's "Entre El Delirio Y La Locura," which I didn't know was released nearly eight months before I charted it. I charted the original version of Angie Stone's "Brotha" four months after it was released. I also charted Dido's "White Flag" two/three months after it was released.

My Charts

Yes. Just look at my personal chart. And I also did this last year. (Prozzak) The only reason I will is if I tend to listen to the song in question on a consistent basis. Otherwise I won't bother. I tried charting In Your Eyes late, but it bombed out at #18 after I stopped listening to Fever for a few months.

I try to follow a couple simple "rules", but they are not set in stone.
1) An album track can chart as long as the act hasn't issued a new album since. This would also apply to a single that I missed the boat on.
2) An older song is receiving some kind of new promotion is eligible, too. Examples would include a movie released on DVD that I am just hearing a song from the soundtrack. That seems to be happening more frequently on my chart.
Another example would be a commercial. After using Paps Fritas ("Way You Walk") in last year's Dentyne Ice commercials, I started to chart down the song even though it was released in 2000. "Way You Walk" is #22 for 2003 on my chart.
Like I said, nothing is is stone. There are probably numerous exceptions that I am not thinking of.
