This will be a chart of the 30 lousiest songs last year. First I will have the 30 most overrated songs that didn't make the chart:
30 Jason Mraz "The Remedy"
I eventually got to sort of like this song, but still it was overplayed.
29 Outkast "Hey Ya"
Not a bad song, it's attention-catching and different from the others. But a great work of art it is not, and does not IMO deserve all the accolades and chart topping weeks it's been getting. Still I can't help but be impressed with the huge, nearly 2000 point lead it had on R&R Pop, and the success of this song that doesn't really fit any category on so many formats: Top 20 on Alternative, where it was first played, #2 on Rhythmic, Top 20 on Urban and still rising fast, and just entering the Top 20 on Hot AC. Why not on AAA? How about Country? Why aren't Jazz stations playing it? AC? Surely it would make the Latin charts if they did a Spanish version...
28 Eminem "Lose Yourself"
Not bad, but didn't deserve to do as well as it did.
27 Kelis "Milkshake"
I'm starting to like it a bit...
26 Ataris "The Boys of Summer"
Passable version of Don Henley's song, but shouldn't have been as big as it was.
25 Matchbox 20 "Bright Lights"
A favorite of many on the boards, but I find it quite bland and boring
24 Michelle Branch "Breathe"
Another favorite of people around here, but it seems to me rather bland, forgettable and hard to distinguish from a number of other songs by similarly sounding singers.
23 Nelly et al "Shake Ya Tailfeather"
Actually one of his best efforts so far; the only one I can think of that's better is "Ride Wit' Me", but it's still far from being worthy of #1. I was thrilled when his followup, "Iz You" collapsed. Maybe if we're lucky, he'll hopefully join Ja Rule, whose miserable "Clap Back" failed, too, slipping into obscurity where they both have always belonged.
22 Missy Elliott "Work It"
Interesting piece of work, perhaps deserving of a short run on the Pop charts. So might the same be said of her followup, "Gossip Folks", but they both hung around longer than I'd like.
21 Clay Aiken "Invisible"
Sounds like so many other bland songs. I'm usually not much affected by the lyrics of a song, but the first verse comment about wishing to be a fly on her wall bugs me.
20 Santana/Kroeger or Band "Why Don't You & I?"
I liked this song when it was occasionally played on the radio before it became released as a single. Now I'm sick of it.
19 Fountains of Wayne "Stacy's Mom"
Sounds too much like junk rock bands such as Good Charlotte and Simple Plan.
18 Liz Phair "Why Can't I?"
Still another example of a woman trying to sing with an attitude in an attempt to liven up an otherwise nothing song, and evidently some people are still falling for it. The other day I heard Avril Lavigne's "Complicated" followed by this song and I never noticed the change from one song to the other. A little later I heard Michelle's "Breathe" and I was thinking "give me a break!".
17 Hillary Duff "So Yesterday"
Perhaps an even more pitiful song.
16 Celine Dion "Have You Ever Been In Love"
One of Celine's worst efforts to date, it hardly deserves climbing to the top of the AC chart and staying in the upper reaches of that woeful chart for so long along with a bunch of other boring and irritating songs. "Stand By Your Side" is much better, but naturally is being virtually ignored.
15 Ja Rule/Ashanti "Mesmerize"
Typical song resulting from the combination of an unimpressive female singer with an overrated male rapper.
14 Christina Aguilera "Beautiful"
Routine ballad, similar to Kelly Clarkson's "A Moment Like This" and so many others before that. Of course, Kelly is copying Christina in so many instances herself.
13 Simple Plan "Perfect"
Maybe as close to perfect as they'll ever get, but still lousy.
12 Eminem "Superman"
Kind of clever, but quickly tiresome.
11 Dixie Chicks "Landslide"
How many times does this song have to be regurgitated? Let's just stick with the original by Fleetwood Mac.
10 Chingy "Right Thurr"
Listenable, but barely; very childish. "Holidae In" (did I spell it right/wrong?) was just as bad.
9 Ludacris "Stand Up"
Seems to be the latest no-talent who can put out whatever junk and for reasons that completely escape me, it becomes a huge hit. Ludicrous indeed!
8 Amanda Perez "Angel"
For some reason, I thought I liked this at first, but the more I heard it the sicker of it I got; might not be so bad if someone with a better voice sang it
7 R Kelly "Ignition"
Another song I thought I liked in the beginning, but that was probably before the remix that unfortunately caught fire.
6 Matchbox 20 "Unwell"
An okay song, but not one I'd want to hear daily for a whole year. It overachieved on all these formats: AAA, Hot AC, Pop, and AC.
5 Fabolous "Can't Let You Go"
Run-of-the-mill rap song.
4 Nickelback "Someday"
I'm so tired of Kroeger's voice. I liked "How You Remind Me", as overplayed as it has been, and "Hero" wasn't bad, but this sounds like a rerun with nothing new or interesting.
3 Ashanti "Rock Wit U"
Didn't like this song.
2 50 Cent "In Da Club"
Not much to this "song"; how it became one of the biggest songs of the year is beyond me.
1 John Mayer "Your Body Is A Wonderland"
I despised this song from the beginning, and unfortunately it got played over and over for months. Actually it would have easily made my Bottom 30 if I had thought of it in time.
It is well past midnight here and I'm getting sleepy, so I'll quit for tonight, and hopefully present my Bottom 30 tomorrow.
