Just because you want an artist thats had a #2 song for many weeks to get that #1? I don't and don't think I ever would.
For example I really liked matchbox twenty's "Bent" but it only managed to peak at #2 for a long 6 weeks behind VH's "Everything You Want" and Matthew Good's "Load Me Up". It would have been easy to get them in for a week but to me that wouldn't have been accurate.

Sometimes I do. Savage Garden, for instance, spent 5 weeks at #2 with "I Knew I Loved You" before sneaking in a week at #1.

Both " Deepest Blue" by Deepest Blue and "Crush (1980 Me)" by Darren Hayes spent a number of weeks at #2 and ended up getting to #1 for one chart appearance. But there have been others that have remained at #2 because the #1 song was too strong. www.geocities.com/tunedon/tunedontop30.html

Nope If a song gets to #1 than it deserves to be there. "If You're Not The One" spent 12 weeks at #2. But it was my #2 song for 2003

Sometimes. Usually they do deserve #1 though, but a lot of times if a song gets 5 or 6 weeks at #1, it does go to #1.

a lot of times if a song gets 5 or 6 weeks at #1, it does go to #1. Clearly...! LOL, what a way to put it. I have quite a number of 1-weekers at #1 every year, and they usually fall pretty fast after hitting #1. Ashanti did it with her past 2 singles. "Baby Boy" sneaked in a week at #1 too. I always have a big problem deciding #1s, but when I do decide that a song really really deserves #1, it'll spend 5+ weeks there, assuming no strong competititon from another song.

Only if I think it's better & has more current staying power than the current #1 at the time.

I don't think I have ever snuck a song in to #1. Top 100 and Top 40 and probably Top 10 sneakers but no #1s as far as I remember!
