Personal Charts for the Pulse 100: 3/9/04

I've decided to try something different this week, so please read the following guidelines:

Sunny (BlahBlahBlah) has devised a program for help in compiling Pulse 100 charts. Once the kinks are worked out, I expect this to decrease the time needed to make the Pulse 100 every week.

One thing you might have noticed is that charts that are posted directly from Microsoft Excel now show two spaces between every field instead of one. This is so the program will recognize a certain artist, title, or position number and input it into the spreadsheet.

The program isn't perfect, though, so I did some trial and error first. With a few guidelines for posting charts, I think it can work very well.

First, you can still either post from Excel or type it out manually.

If you are posting from Excel:

• (Recommended) Put the LW position (if you are posting one) in the column before the TW position. This way I don't have to manually put two spaces before the TW position. Actually you can still post LW position anywhere else on the line instead of directly after the TW position. The program ignores that column anyway.

• Don't post "2W" (two weeks ago) positions.
• Place any other data such as Weeks On Chart, Peak Position, etc. off to the right of the Title/Artist. That way the program doesn't try to recognize it as a position.

If you are typing out your chart manually:

• Place the LW position directly before the TW position.

Important for all:
If it's not too much trouble, type the title before the artist. That's the order it's in on the Pulse 100 spreadsheets, and a title/artist combination won't be recognized unless they're in that order. (fixed by Sunny)

Revisions to the program include an option that asks if the LW or TW position comes first, and if the Title or Artist comes first. So now it doesn't matter which way you type them out, as long as there are double spaces before TW, Title, and Artist (if you're pasting from Excel, there should be double spaces before LW, TW, Title, and Artist, but that's how the output is formatted anyway).

A sample chart format that works perfectly when placed into the Pulse 100 compiler (Sunny's ):

There are too many spaces before the position, and that hyphen character doesn't seem to be recognized. Just use a dash there.

Just hit space twice. There's a double space between these two sentences. :)

Lostprophets regain #1 for a fifth week, unbulleted, but they're just a placeholder until next week when "Maps" is almost sure to take #1. Blink-182 regain their bullet, but it's unlikely they'll set a new peak.

After getting enough album-track love to rank as my #5 song of 2003, Switchfoot's "Dare You to Move" finally enters Matt's Top 50 at #15 upon its single release. This might be too played out in my mind to hit #1 though.

Below that is a logjam of epic proportions. Between #17 and #41, just two songs are unbulleted out of 25. It sends Kanye West down 4, and Usher, Muse, Twista, Brand New and the Ying Yang Twins down 3 -- all bulleted. The only ones I can see losing their bullet next week are Usher (in his second straight week with a backward bullet) and Muse, but Muse hasn't even gone for Alternative adds yet, so even that may rebound.

Nickelback's rebound back into the top 50 appears short-lived, but "Figured You Out" may be getting a second wind itself. Jet might be headed back to the top 50 too.

The Anberlin song is another one from Tooth & Nail Records (see Mae), but this one I'm sure is a single, because I just watched the video for it online... not that great. Two of their other songs, "Glass to the Arson" and "Love Song" (yes, a remake of The Cure just like 311's), are really good but aren't singles. One or both would be top 10 on my most-played list this week though.

Jay-Z comes in nicely at #67. "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" should make the top 50, where "Change Clothes" missed and "99 Problems" just dropped out. The Strokes might get their biggest hit yet with "Reptilia". Their only previous single to make the top 50 was "Hard to Explain", which hit #23.

And for those of you complaining that I didn't follow the format I set... I can always just pull up my spreadsheet and input it the right way there.

Chart Notes
***After working its way up the chart for 5 weeks, "I Miss You" by Blink 182 make it to #1.
***3 Doors Down's "Away From the Sun" falls to #2 after having a healthy 4 week stay at #1. Expect this to have a lot of longevity, similar to Evanescence.
***Currently bombing up Ted's Top 20 is Avril Lavigne. "Don't Tell Me" will really struggle to get to #1, while Blink 182 has come in strong, and won't be losing their bullet anytime soon. This could have the longest #1 run of the year. Last year was "Here Without You 1(6)" and "Addicted1(7)"
***Fefe Dobson tumbles all the way to #5, after peaking at the dreaded #2 for 3 weeks. It's too bad she didn't make it to #1, because then she would have had two back to back numbers 1s.
***"Toxic" holds steady in the Top 5. This isn't good enough for number one, but it peaked at #3, and has had longevity inside the Top 5.
***"Hold On" by Good Charlotte slowly works its way down the chart, after being the 2nd highest peaking single (peak#4) from this band. "The Anthem" spent 5 weeks at #1 last year.
***Just like on the CHR/POP chart, Fuel has been rising forever, and continues to move up at a steady pace. This is at #7 and could make Top 5.
***Black Eyed Peas "Hey Mama" is going to need something special to get it going again. It doesn't look like it will get any higher than 14-15 anytime soon.
***Three Days Grace, Five For Fighting, J-Kwon, Enrique Iglesias, Beyonce, Hoobastank, and Kanye West are all heating up. Find out to see which songs explode, and which songs are put out.

I think this will peak right around #20. An average, ordinary song, from the loser of American Idol. It's ok.

Jennifer Lopez f/ R. Kelly - Baby I Love You C
Um, no J.LO, this isn't going to be a success. No one will like you better because of this. Face it, you're a failure. No one cares about you. This will peak lower than the original. Stop trying to ruin R. Kelly's career by having him featured in your song! R. Kelly, wtf?

THEY DID IT! Nickelback get one last week on (at #20, no less!), and in doing so, establish themselves as my chart's biggest charting song to date since the chart became a Top 20.

BUT THAT'S NOT THE ONLY STORY THIS WEEK: Meanwhile, at the top of the chart, there's a new #1. Britney Spears sends Beyonce packing (and all the way down to #4!), and also passes Evanescence to take over #1.

AND LASTLY, BUT NOT LEASTLY: Sarah McLachlan manages to re-enter the chart at #19 with "Fallen". Whether or not she'll get a full 2nd run remains to be seen, but the fact that she re-entered is something in itself.
