Those are the primary influences that i could think of but, personally I use a combination of Personal Airplay and Favoritism.
Probably about 85% airplay and 15% Favoritism, for those of you who like detail. :)

100% favoritism, because that's a catch-all that is influenced by airplay, radio and video play, concerts, etc.

Favoritism.Β I keep my entire Top 100 on Winamp and I move them up and down the playlist as I like.Β Then on Tuesdays, I compile the chart with what I have. I don't like letting airplay influence anything. My #1 last year was Jody Watley's "Whenever" which was released exclusively to the clubs. I never once heard it on the radio and I'd hate for it to not have been a hit just because I never heard it on the radio. I sure overplayed it in my CD player and computer.

Favoritism for positions 1-39.
Position 40 goes to the song with the most airplay that has not yet charted.Β Sort of a "free pass".

For me, it's favoritism, but the song has to be charting at the time. For album cuts that I like, but aren't even released for airplay, the album has to be popular at the time (although for Supertramp's LP "Breakfast In America", I did stretch the rules, as songs from that were charting into the fall of 1980, a year after the last track was released from it. The LP cuts I charted were: "Oh, Darling", "Just Another Nervous Wreck", and "Lord Is It Mine".

i'm surprised... i didn't realize it was so ARBITARY for almost all of you! lol.
i'm the only one so far who's 100% personal airplay. I chart how many times I play each song, using iTunes, from week to week. On a week that I'm around my room a lot, the #1 song could have as many as a couple dozen plays, and #20 could have like three. On a normal week, it's about ten plays for #1.
So ties are a problem because a lot of songs will have, say, five plays. The ties are broken by whichever song had the highest position the previous week. So if songs X, Y, and Z all have five plays, and X was at #10, Y was at #3, and Z is a debut, then they'll be ranked in the order Y, X, Z.
It works out really well because it keeps songs from being at #2 with ten plays, and then the next week if there is a seven-way tie, it won't fall to #9, it'll stay at #2, which is appropriate.

I've been trying to figure out how to track weekly airplay using Winamp, but no luck so far. I do have a rough estimate of what my most-played songs of the year are so far, though. About 90% of the time I play my mp3s through Winamp, and it's been tracking since January 3. 46 - Lostprophets "Last Train Home" 44 - Story of the Year "Until the Day I Die" 43 - OutKast "The Way You Move" 40 - Incubus "Megalomaniac" 38 - Maroon 5 "This Love" 38 - Britney Spears "Toxic" 34 - Trapt "Echo" 34 - Muse "Time Is Running Out" 34 - Ataris "The Saddest Song" 32 - Jason Mraz "You and I Both" I might be missing one or two if different mp3s of the same song were played - for example, the mp3 I downloaded of "The Way You Move" has received 25 plays, and the version I ripped from the CD has 18. I'll make sure everything is counted at the end of the year though.

I'll make sure everything is counted at the end of the year though. each week when I go to make the chart, i sort the playlist (which only contains songs played in the last week, thats how i know when its gone recurrent, and i mark the genre of the song "R&B single" or "Pop single" also, that's how i make the playlist automatic) and then go to Excel and time in the number of plays its up to. so one week its 47 plays say, the next week its 56, so its 9 for the week. of course its not EXACLTY one week, sometimes i may do the chart on wedn. sometimes on thursday, but it works out. The most PLAYS so far this year (I'm doing a different process for year-end) are: 1."If I Ain't Got You" - 90 (since release; actual total is 143) 2."U Should've Known Better" - 85 (that's just since it was released; since I had this song even before "After the Storm" the full total is 320, wow) 3."I Want You" - 66 4."Ooh Boy" - 55 5."Yeah" - 54

95% I use personal airplay. I use iTunes which counts how many times you have played a song. Other 5% I must allow for adjustments, like music video influence.

I've been trying to figure out how to track weekly airplay using Winamp, but no luck so far. I have Winamp and use the Listen-To plugin to track my weekly, daily & 24hour airplay. It's pretty reliable.

My #1 most played mp3 on winamp is 'Surfacing' by David Usher with 108 plays since late last year. #2 has 96 plays but I forget what song it is.
My chart is pretty much based on favouritism with alittle from computer airplay. I can be influenced by what I hear on the radio or wherever but only enough for me to give the song another chance (like Usher's 'Yeah' that I'd hear at a club. Thanks to hearing that, I gave it another chance and now I like it again).

Favoritism is part of it, and I'd say 75% has to do with that and personal airplay, those usually help songs do really well on my chart. I would include personal video play, but Launch doesn't like my computer apparently.
However, I need more exposure to a song to be able to get it to stay on for a regular amount of time.
Favoritism/personal airplay is responsible for VAST having the first non-single #1 in my personal chart history.

My Top 30 Chart
My chart is made up by a point system.
However many points each song has in one week will determine where the song is placed on my chart.
The number one single on my chart usually has 130 points or more.
The points on my chart usually look a lot like Billboard's Audience Impressions.
50 Points = No.30 60 Points = No.20 65 Points = No.15 75 Points = No.10 90 Points = No.5 130 Points = No.1
Songs that aren't released to radio, chart solely by personal airplay.
My chart is compiled with the following components:
75% [Personal Airplay]
Winamp Chart CD player Car CD player
I take the total spins in one week from all the music players and multiply them by four to get the Personal Airplay points.
Usually the No.1 song gets 32 spins, if the song gets more spins it gets higher points.
25% [Billboard]
I take the position the song is on the Billboard Hot 100 and use my point system, when I plug in all the numbers.

Is there anything that'll track the total time a track's been played in Winamp over a certain period of time, as opposed to just number of plays?
I'm so fickle with my listening habits - most of the time I don't listen to a song til it's over, and right now I have all my songs in a big playlist and I'll shuffle through it, skipping a bunch of songs and stopping on something that sounds good at that moment for a few seconds...then skip to another....and on and on.
