ok, time to 'fess up...
anyone else chart a song out of sheer sentimentality/laziness/desire to give it a #1, etc....or any other reason other than that it actually earned the slot?
way back in 1979, i charted abba's "does your mother know" something like this...7-6-5-4-3-3-2-1-1-4-6-off
...and i listened to the song about 3 times!
i don't know...i guess i was being sentimental because i didn't really like the song, but i had such fond memories of abba as a kid.
i only did that one other time...and i hesitate to reveal that it was with...(gulp!)...On the Shelf by Donnie and Marie (ouch!)
just a thought...is it possible to accept payola...from yourself?

I don't think I understand...
But sometimes I buy into hype instead of choosing what hits #1 by my own preference. For instance, when "SexyBack" hit #1.

I have had a lot of songs debut real high and then they drop very quickly because I listened to them a lot in the beginning then I just totally stopped. I have such a high turnover rate that it's going to take me a few weeks to do all the tallying for the year-end chart.
And then I'll do re-entries for some songs that have started getting more spins again after dropping, but then I won't go back in and see how many weeks the song had been on the chart before. Chances are if it had dropped so quickly, it probably only had at least 2 to 5 weeks already.
And I still have Madonna's "Hung Up" on my chart. It's been on for 54 weeks now and the lowest it has dropped was 40. It debuted at number one and stayed at number one for 20 consecutive weeks. Now that's scandalous! In the time HU has been on the chart, "Sorry", "Get Together", "Isaac" and "Jump" have all been on the chart (not all at the same time).

One time I dropped a song from #10 off my chart, completely by accident. Making matters worse, I then also forgot to include that song on my year end chart. Talk about a song getting the shaft!

I know that I have only listened to some of the songs on my personal chart a couple of times. Artist favouritism also skewers my judgement on a song a little.

LOL @ the idea of personal charts having "scandals"

I know! it busts me up... i will say that when my indiscretion was discovered, I amended my year-end chart totals at the time and "penalized" abba and donny and marie accordingly. i, of course, got off scott free after giving myself a stern warning to never chart anything by the osmonds again.

LOL! I never thought of it before. I'm sure my chart has had scandals. I've charted a few non-released songs recently (my chart is released-songs only) because of the artist and I wanted them on my chart, LOL, but the songs didn't do as well as if they were official so in the end I guess it probably hurt their string of hits.
Despite what some might think, the 17-week run of 'Nobody's Home' by Avril at #1 I still stand by as being authentic.

Only thing I can thing of for me is when year-end charts come.
I keep a stat sheet of point totals for my chart, but I never actually use them to determine the year-end list! I do consider them though, and so its a mix of the points and overall preference throughout the year. Usually songs that hit #1 do pretty well, though.

I often fudge year-end point totals if two songs are extremely close and I've grown tired of one over the other. I figure that the year-end chart is there to represent my taste for that year, and if I don't like a song much by the end of that year, no harm done.
The only blatant ridiculousness I can think of occurred during the first few months of the chart's existence in 1997. I re-entered "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone" at #1 after it had fallen off the chart a few weeks earlier just because I wanted it to have eight weeks at #1 rather than seven.

This thread is hilarious!
I don't think I've had any personal chart "scandals", but even I'm occasionally influenced by the masses... I gave "Gallery" a 2nd chance a bit ago when it received a HUGE push from the record label after it had charted in the lower 40's of my chart... now it's around #20...
I also thought about (but didn't) recharting Bo Bice's "The Real Thing" and Kelly Clarkson's "Walk Away" after they had fallen off my charts - actually the latter may actually reappear soon...
One thing I try to do to prevent burnout is not to overplay songs or listen to them too much when they are becoming hits... and this helps keep the chart fluid an pretty devoid of weird up and down movement... For example, if my favorite song is playing on the radio, I may change it simply to avoid burning myself out on it too fast... this is probably why stuff like Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" still sounds fresh to me... I also listen to Carrie Underwood's songs frequently, but I don't burn them to death...
One last thing... I will gladly take Payola to help your favorites on my charts within reason. ;)

I base my charts of iTunes/WinAmp/DJ plays and every time around christmas "My Only Wish (This Year)" by Britney somehow makes its way back into the Top 10.
Back when it was released, it spent 14 weeks at #1 lol

my charts are based on itunes/z100/personal playcounts and i am having trouble letting hips don't lie fall off my top 40 so i keep "boosting" it......but keep that on the low.....
and last year i hated Mariah's "We Belong Together" and i had the song but I never listened to it......but it still managed to do well on my end of yr chaRts....I STILL DON'T LIKE IT! I guess bcuz it was such a huge hit u cant even deny it!

I'd like to base my chart on how much I listen to stuff because really, that's a good accurate way of determining how much I like stuff, but I use at least two different programs to play music on my computer and I think both keep track of what I play but I also listen to music on my CD player and stuff and unless I begin writing that down (which I'm not willing to do), I can't keep track of those.
But my iPod also keeps track of listens, which I will start to take into account now. Maybe I could combine all of my iPod/computer airplays somehow...!

That's the thing. I don't feel like putting the data into excel every week and also some weeks I favour different music programs. I think my iPod listening should be fairly consistant so right now I'll probably just use that somehow.

On my 10/28/05 chart, Nickelback's "Photograph" debuted on my Top 50 countdown at #49. I'm not sure if I was swayed by the song's popularity... I'd like to think I was just struggling that week to come up with 50 songs lol, but there it was.
Inexplicably, the song moved up to #48 the next week and stayed there another two weeks, before finally dropping off. I should've sent myself a hate e-mail explaining what a hack and loser I was.... not only would I have felt better, but I would've been motivated to knock them off my countdown sooner.
