We all get pissed when radio refuses to play a perfectly good song for no apparent reason. Let's make a list of the hits radio screwed over the past year. Mine is mainly CHR-focused.
(I Hate) Everything About You by Three Days Grace (it didn't flop THAT bad, but it should have been a huge Alternative crossover.) Just Like You by Three Days Grace U Should Have Known Better by Monica Rest In Pieces by Saliva Whatever U Want by Christina Milian f/ Joe Budden Echo by Trapt (see (IH)EAY) Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand Ordinary by Train Our Lives by The Calling Dat Sexy Body by Sasha

My list consists of...
"Try" ~ Nelly Furtado (was that this year?) "White Houses" ~ Vanessa Carlton "World on Fire" ~ Sarah McLachlan "Eight Easy Steps" ~ Alanis Morissette "Come On" ~ Ben Jelen (was that this year?) "Trick Me" ~ Kelis "Everything" ~ Fefe Dobson

Stupid and World On Fire both should have been Top 10 Hot AC hits for Sarah McLachlan. They were right up there with any of the Surfacing singles.
The Closer I Get To You should have been a Top 5 Urban AC hit for Luther Vandross and Beyonce. I'm still blown away that this peaked at #15. The track features two artists who have had Urban AC hits, especially Luther who is a staple and has a long list of #1's. It won a Grammy award for God's sake. The only thing I can think of is that they weren't crazy about playing it because it was a cover.
Echo was a way better Trapt song than "Headstrong" was. It should have been bigger at all formats.
It was a travesty that Lisa Loeb's Fools Like Me missed the Hot AC chart by a million miles. If "Underdog" could scrape the chart, there was no reason why this song (which was her most radio friendly since "I Do") shouldn't have.

White Houses Try by Nelly World on Fire by Sarah Penny and Me-Hanson I wish Take Me Out, Float On, Ordinary, Vindicated and Accidentally in Love would have went top 10 on pop (then again...all of these songs going top 10 would be my idea of a perfect world )

Janet's All Nite was one of the hottest dance songs of the year and it couldn't even CRACK the damn Hot 100? Now that's a shame. I can understand the first two doing lukewarm, because they didn't really connect, but I remember a majority of people loving All Nite.
Damien Rice is my man, and I know he had a hit with Cannonball on some format, but I wish he got some of the love Norah Jones had when she was blowing up. I would've loved to see one of his songs crack the top 50 on airplay. I may be dreaming, but hey, he's worth it.
Kanye's Jesus Walks was one of the best hip hop songs released this year, in my opinion. But of course, for obvious reasons, it really didn't do much of anything.
Kelis' Trick Me was hot, but ignored!
Loved JC Chasez' Build My World, and it's a shame what happened to his solo career, as his music was actually better than I expected. But hey, weak first singles can make or break.
Our Lives by The Calling was one of my favorite songs this year. I thought this track was very underplayed. It should've done way better.

ummm that song just barely missed the Top 10 of the Hot 100 Well, that makes me a happy camper. Thanks for the info - I'm completely shocked. I remember calling to request it on my local radio station, and the DJ was like, "We don't play that song. It offends our listeners." And this was a urban station. I guess since I never heard it or found out any chart info for it, I always thought it bombed.

The biggest...Vanessa Carlton "White Houses"
Not so bad: Linkin Park "Breaking The Habit" hyped up to a quick peak, then dropped far to fast.
N.E.R.D. "She Wants To Move" JC Chasez "Build My World" (Shockingly good.) Three Days Grace "Just Like You" Three Days Grace "I Hate (Everything About You)" Crossfade "Cold" Josh Kelley "Amazing" Alanis Morrisette "Eight Easy Steps" Sugarcult "Memory" The Offspring "Hit That" Bubba Sparxxx "Back In Da Mud" Joss Stone...all of them. Kylie Minogue "Slow" Jay-Z "Change Clothes" O.A.R. "Hey Girl" Story of The Year The Darkness "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" Blink-182 "Feeling This"
And they really screwed up for even playing Ashlee Simpson.
Isn't Saliva's "Rest in Pieces" last year? They played the crap out of it here, and it was something like #10 on the local station Year End Countdown.

I'm surprised how many people have listed "World on Fire" by Sarah Mclachlan. I am a fan of her's but this song just doesn't do it for me.

Some of these are a bit baffling.
Just Like You was #1 at alternative for nearly a month, how is that considered screwed over? If you're only thinking about CHR, then all I have to say is well, who needs to be played on pop music stations to have success?
I Hate Everything About You peaked at #3 on alternative, quite respectable for such a crappy song.
Maps from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs cracked the top 10 and although it could have and should have been a #1 at alternative, the top 10 is much better than nothing.
Talk Shows On Mute peaked at #3, which is very respectable. There's no way it could have duplicated or came close to the success of Megalomaniac (7 weeks at #1 on alternative, the longest running #1 of the year.)
Franz Ferdinand's Take Me Out which by all means should have been #1, peaked at #3 on alternative, which is good enough for me.
So, in other words, these songs did not get denied airplay at all. Maybe not on the format you wanted, but they definitely got airplay.

I think when most people do this, they have mainstream in their heads-I did for the most part (though I did add that I wished my songs would have been played more on pop)

Some of these are a bit baffling. Yeah, the only one of those that I could even think of disputing would be "Maps", only because it has literally fallen off this planet. With those other songs though, either their radio's got the wrong presets, or they actually want alternative stations to have their songs played 110 times a week. And anyone actually wishing for the latter deserves jail time.

First of all, I can't believe "Love Is Only A Feeling" by the Darkness never got a chance here at all! That was certain to be some sort of hit, as should "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" deserving to hit bigger than it did.
"Cannonball" by Damien Rice should have hit on Hot AC at least. It had the sound worthy of becoming the next "Babylon"
Mindy Smith was also terribly overlooked this year. "Come To Jesus" should have made waves beyond Triple A, plus "Fighting For It All", an even more radio-friendly track, should have charted anywhere.
Counting Crows should have gotten more airplay for "Accidentally In Love" on CHR/Pop. "Shrek 2" was an enormous success, and this track hit big on Hot AC, yet got stuck at the same peak as "Big Yellow Taxi". It should have went Top 20, and even had what it took to go Top 10.
Vanessa Carlton's "White Houses" SHOULD be a Hot AC smash. It's lukewarm run at CHR/Pop is not too suprising, but this screamed Hot AC hit. It's beyond puzzling how Hot AC could have a huge liking for her debut single then shut her off on every other single.
Lenny Kravitz did everything right in crafting the perfect lead single, "Where Are We Runnin'", yet it has become one of his forgettable releases. "Lady" has already outpeaked the single at Hot AC and may do so at CHR/Pop also.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton
