What songs have had odd/unique titles, and what song titles have you not understood why the artist named it that. For me, where did Goo Goo Dolls get the title "Iris" from? Goo Goo Dolls probably have some of the most unique song titles, like "Big Machine" does anyone know what the big machine is? "Here Is Gone" has often stumped people. "Hate This Place" for a song that there is nothing to hate about. A lot of songs, but I think that's what makes a band/artist unique is to always keep their fans wondering what their trying to say.

This thread has an odd/unique title. ;)
One title I've never understood is Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" (the one that goes, "everybody must get stoned").

Mary J. Blige's "Family Affair"
The only thing I can come up with is that she's saying everyone, no matter their race ["it don't matter if you're white or black"] or anything else, should just get together and have a good time.

"Here Is Gone" has often stumped people. Yes! (I also think it's part of the reason the song underpermed. Everyone was like, "Huh?") Also some Dave Matthews Band songs... like "Two Step" for instance.

He may say it, you just can't understand it Seriously, that is the norm for Dylan. I have a couple of friends who worship the guy, and he has many others where the song title is not in the name.

"Sliver" ~ Nirvana, I can't figure this one out! Someone help! It sounds like this is about a bad childhood experience Kurt had at his grandparents' house. The refrain "Grandma take me home" sung over and over plus talking about killing his pet toad certainly make it a credible interpretation. Although, I really don't care too much because I just think it's a really cool song to listen to.

Goo Goo Dolls - Iris (although I get "I don't want the world to see me", but it is still a strange title).

Chantal Kreviazuk's 'M'. I'm not sure about that one. I'm thinking the girl's name that the song is about started with an 'M' or something... either that or it's 'M' for Mike B!

My rule of thumb is, if you don't know what a song (or a title) means, then it's probably about sex.

I've always wondered what "Tubthumping" means.
Well, the song's not about sex, but it is about booze, so I guess that's something to consider...

From Merriam-Webster: Main Entry: tub-thumpΒ·er Pronunciation: 't&b-"th&m-p&r Function: noun Date: 1662 : a vociferous supporter (as of a cause) - tub-thump /-"th&mp/ verb

So they vociferously support... drinking? And the subsequent urination.

I remember Casey explaining Chumbawamba's song title.
The vociferous ones would stand on over-turned washtubs and get people's attention by thumping the tub with the bottom of a cane.
Or something like that...

Britney Spears "Me Against The Music"
If you are against music then maybe you shouldn't be a singer. I don't understand the tittle and i don't understand why they didn't call it "In The Zone". Now that i think about it, why isn't it called "Us Against The Music" since Madonna is on the track and it's not only Britney?

It's about dancing in a club and wanting to get so much attention that you upstage the song playing (note the line "let's take on the song"). And Madonna didn't come into the picture until after their VMA performance together, when the album was pretty much done. But who can say no to Madonna? Funny how I can sound like a Britney expert just by having watched MTV a little in the past couple weeks.

I do not know why Atlantic Records titled Angela Via's "Wish We Could Be Free" "Christmas Wish" on the TRL Christmas CD.

I always wondered, ddoes she ever say "Me Against the Music" in the song other than when she whispers it at the beginning?

I always wondered, ddoes she ever say "Me Against the Music" in the song other than when she whispers it at the beginning? Sounds like she says the title in the first verse when she starts to sing fast, though I can't be sure. Another strange title: "Epic" by Faith No More. What does that suppose to mean?
