Good year:Justin Timberlake-Leaves one of the most successful boy groups in pop music to have a killer successful year. All of his singles this year have been big in pop music. I may not like his music, but I have to hand it to him.
Bad year:Fred Durst-Leader of one of the most successful nu-metal bands self destructs this year. Chicago was a mess, Results May Vary was a hit, but I think will be a commercial failure nonetheless, and his latest verbal sparring with a DJ proves that he and his band are in decline.
Good Year/Bad Year-Evanescence-Barring 50 Cent, this is the biggest new artist of the year. Bring Me To Life was a top-5 most played song in 4 different formats (Pop, Alternative, Hot AC, and Christian) hitting #1 in 3 (Christian, Alternative, Pop). Going Under is a strong recurrent in alternative radio. My Immortal has the potential to be another worldwide smash. So then what happens? Ben Moody, the guitarist and creative co-captain, leaves the band possibly for good.

The good: 1. Norah Jones (big Grammy wins, album stays in the 40 despite being almost two years old) 2. 50 Cent (I think this is self-explanatory) 3. Linkin Park (three alternative #1's, 3 million in album sales proves no sophmore slump) 4. Toby Keith (2 country #1's, a huge debut week, and Unleashed is still selling strong) 5. 3 Doors Down (album stays on charts all year, two pop #1's) 6. Beyonce (two pop #1's, shows she can sell as a solo act) 7. Hilary Duff ( who would have thought she would cross over like that. Her best sales weeks are yet to come) Others: Evanescence. Justin, Xtina, MercyMe, Kenny Chesney, Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken
THE BAD: 1. Pink (last year's top artists has two disappointing singles) 2. Limp Bizkit (album is looking like a flop) 3. Madonna (album failed, singles failed) 4. John Mayer (should have had a stonger follow-up than he did) 5. Ja Rule (has turned into a joke) Others: J Lo, Michael Jackson

************Artists With A Good 2003*********
matchbox twenty: Almost everyone laughed even at the thought of "Unwell" being a Top-10 hit and thought "in your dreams". What happened? "Unwell" not only graced the Top 10, but also had the CHR/Pop chart's longest chart run of 2003 (34 weeks). The single helped "More Than You Think You Are" sell a million more copies and it's heading double-platinum with the smaller success of "Bright Lights". The perfect touch-up for a band going into veteran status.
Jack Johnson: Despite lacking a hit single from "On And On", this talented artist still managed to sell a sophomore album near platinum status, nearly matching the sales figurs for his debut "Brushfire Fairytales". Another underrated artist still finding silver linings.
50 Cent: He has this year's best-selling album in the U.S and one of the most-played singles of 2003 ("In Da Club").
Christina Aguilera: As many previous pop sensations have died down in recent years, particularly the divas, Christina came back strong when all seemed lost with "Dirrty". How "Beautiful" a year it is for Christina, with a triple-platinum album domestically that has sold far more millions worldwide, and a handful of Top-10 hits.
Evanescence: The top-selling debut rock act of 2003. They earned their first #1 and another Top-10 on Alternative. Their album is also selling upwards of double-platinum status.
Coldplay: Their debut sold a successful 1.4 million records domestically. Now, their sophomore has sold twice that amount and going. In addition, Coldplay graced the AAA chart this year with flying colors, got another Top 40 CHR/Pop hit, and critical raves all around.
Kid Rock: Who knew that a fourth single from an album that was bound to crash and burn when being followed-up by a diamond-certified "Devil Without A Clause" would turn out to be the sleeper mega-hit of 2003? Well it sure paid off. Thanks to "Picture" with Sheryl Crow and Allison Krauss, Kid Rock sold about another three million copies, and now "Cocky" has drifted into the sunset again, only with success.
Toby Keith: Wow, his first-week sales for his latest "Shock'N Y'All" are quite close to what britney is expected to sell in her opening week. Toby is clearly the new talk of the town on Country and is biger than he has ever been. "Americsn Soldier" can well earn him another #1.
*************Artists With A Bad 2003***********
Michael Jackson: Must I explain again?
Madonna: "American Life" hit a huge pothole for Madonna, and she has lacked the ability to continue to produce Top-10 hits like she used to this year. Her children's books are not selling well, and on top of it all, she just doesn't seem to have the Material Mom logo anymore.
Pink: Considering her previous album "Misundazstood" went quadruple-platinum, 147,000 copies sold of "Try This" in its opening week is a massive disappointment. If "God Is A DJ" can't do anything, this album is going to crash and burn.
Jewel: OK, so it's not a total loss. "Intuition" did give her her first Top-10 hit in quite a long time. However, many of her previous fans just couldn't buy her new image, and with particularly negative reviews, only a gold album status sales-wise for "0304" and all single follow-ups tanking as of yet, Jewel must fit into the "bad" realm.
Limp Bizkit: This looks like the end for Limp Bizkit's Alternative dominance. He better throw in the towel to Linkin Park, as "Results May Vary" falls far below the six-times platinum success of "Chocolate Starfish and the Hot-Dog Flavored Water"
*************The Good/Bad 2003 Artist*****************
Dixie Chicks: First, the bad news. The Dixie Chicks remain barred from country airwaves and a number of its conservative fan-base have abandoned them. However, the sun is also shining on the other side for them. They had one of the most successful tours of 2003, including the Most Successful Country Tour, and "Home" still held at #3 on the Billboard Country chart for a few months after the March comment by Natalie Maines. In addition, they have a loyal fan-base, particularly more moderate or liberal, still embracing this already legendary country trio.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

THE BAD: 5. Ja Rule (has turned into a joke) :'( 50 Cent has definitely had a good year, with his 8 million album sales, or whatever. Ashanti has had a good year. 2 #2's on the Hot 100, plus an additional top 10. #1 album for 2 weeks, and over 1,000,000 sales. Angela Via has also had a good year. Over 280 fans have come together and signed an online petition for her album release, which will happen in 2004. She has also been #1 on YourMp3.net for multiple days with her hits "Papi Chulo" and "Picture Perfect (Boy Wonder Mix)."

Good year
Delta Goodrem (Career wise she's had the most amazing success above any other artist, even if she hasn't gone worldwide yet... it's a shame she was diagnosed with cancer at the height of it all but she'll be stronger at the other end) Christina Aguilera Justin Timberlake 50 Cent Beyonce
Bad year
Holly Valance (sued by her ex-manager, she claims she has little money left, and now her album has flopped in Australia and UK). Madonna Melanie C

Bad year Holly Valance ( sued by her ex-manager, she claims she has little money left, and now her album has flopped in Australia and UK). And had to paid him about $500,000 too. Good Delta Goodrem - a year any artist dreams of; meaning the kinda success she has in UK and Australia. Emma Bunton - two top 10 singles and doing better than Melanie C. Outkast - they're bigger than ever. If my rock friend, who despies rap/hip hop likes atleast one song. Then whoa! Disappointing Sophie Ellis Bextor - her album plummet from #19-#56 and now off the top 100. Her lead single "Mixed Up World" spent 4 weeks or so in the top 50. If "I Won't Change You" does well, she things could turn around... hopefully.

I wouldn't consider having the #1 Urban song of 2003 to be a bad year. No...but over all, it wasnt a good year. Her album flopped after getting pushed back numerous times, and her second/third singles not doing well at all.

She's the next Amanda Latona! All those loyal fans for an artist who has only had limited success. J Records, here she comes. Mixed year, verdict is still out on: Amanda LatonaThe good: - Scored her second Top 125 CHR/Pop hit with "Do You Still" in May.
- Almost shot a music video.
- Billboard Magazine said "the enticing 'Do You Still' [was] a fine, hook-ripe midtempo track that is a better listen than 90% of what's on today's top 40 airwaves."
- With over 2400 votes, "DYS" was voted as the Hitmakers choice of the week.
- PeopleBase welcomed her back with open arms, "Do You Still" went Top 4 and stayed on for a relatively long time, placing it in the Year-End Chart.
- PeopleBase members voted "Do You Still" as the "sexiest debut" last week, triumphing over Chantal Kreviazuk (disqualifed because of being a re-entry) and Melanie Doane! (Week of April 19 '03)
- R&R Forum posters predicted "DYS" would get 15-20+ adds when it impacted!
- Music Choice Hit List added "DYS"
The bad: - J Records closed her street team
- J Records dropped Latona with no explanation. :'(
- Her debut album was not released.
- "DYS" ONLY got about 2 major adds its impact week.
- "DYS" did not last long in CHR/Pop Top 125.

THE GOOD 1. 50 Cent - Selling over 8 million copies of your first major release is no easy feat, unless you knock the most popular rapper of 2001/2002. 2. Beyonce - After leaving one of the most successful girl groups in the world and having your first solo flop in 2002 Beyonce was a clear winner this year. 3. Justin Timberlake - Two huge singles in 2003. 4. Christina Aguilera - After "Dirrty" flopped everone wondered if Christina still had it, but she proved everyone wrong with "Beautiful", "Fighter", "Can't Hold Me Down", and now "The Voice Within". Major props to Christina! 5. Evanescence - A huge act this year.
THE BAD 1. Michael Jackson - After the recent events, his career is likely to be over whether or not he goes to jail. 2. Madonna - "American Life" was the flop of the year, not to mention the platform for many jokes. 3. Pink - With the flop of "Trouble" and her only selling around 150,000 of the album in its debut week, it leads one to wonder if Pink will ever another "Missundaztood". 4. Ja Rule - After being slamed many times by 50 Cent, Ja's own fans turned there back on him. Although, "Clap Back" has manged to go top 50 on the hot 100 and his album "Blood In Eye" did debut in the top 10. 5. Mariah Carey - After 2001's breakdown Mariah released two singles in 2003 "Boy (I Need You)" and "Bringin' On The Heartbreak", neither of which were able to reach the top 100 on the hot 100, which is almost unheard of for Mariah's standards. She also moved from large arenas to small venues after her 2003 tour was not selling.

Sorry i havent got the energy to do a bad list, so i'll just do some which i think are highlights generally and some personally to me The good1. 50 Cent - Very popular, however I dont agree with the way he dissed another rapper to get popular and use extra hype ie- wearing bullet proof vests when they arent neccesarry, its all about the hype, and as someone else said, the timining for him dissing ja rule was perfect, probably when a lot of people needed a break from ja, which caused even his own fans to stop feeling his music and turn on him 2. Sean Paul - One of my personal faves, very nice and addictive music, even though when it gets old I would probably not listen to it very much (ie - i probably would never listen to baby boy again despite how much i liked it when it was very first out) 3. Outkast - Great idea with the dual single albums! its like 2 albums in one, and the double single thing they're doing is cool! also you can choose which singles you want next from www.outkast.com and then they're planning to do another dual-single release which is a very unique idea, also the fact that Hey Ya can get spins on most major formats, including urban ones, pop ones, AND even rock ones is a very clever idea 4. Jay z - very consistent career and very clever idea to say this will be his last album, its a win-win situation, because saying its his last album will generate attention, and would make more people anticipate his comeback if and when he decided to drop his next album 5. Justin - hats off to him, very nicely produced album no matter how much of a pop background he had, i just wouldnt want him to do another nsync record (which they probably are going to do) i feel sorry for him if he ends up doing that. Very nice album though, a few good tracks, one I like is Take me now (And she said) - Timbaland is a genius :) 6. Pharrell - despite me liking him in the early days of Jay Z's I just Wanna Love you record, he has gained even more popularity this year and is in so many records this year, hats of to him for producing some amazing songs and also becoming a successfull artist name in the hiphop and even rnb world just to add a little something.. Dont forget she was part of a top 3 hit just a few months ago, and despite no promotion whatsoever, album sales for charmbracelet are nearing 5 million worldwide (thats quite good considering) aswell as having arena dates in Asia with over 25 thousand in attendance, the voice is now back in perfect form after getting it back 'into shape' from the first few dates she did, all in all kept it moving and I am very optimistic about the next album which i think may come out late 2004, along with much stronger, non-whispery vocals :)

ALL of that sounds pretty bad to me. Even the "good" stuff Well, Latona fans are pretty happy for her success. I mean, if I was a new artist like Amanda Latona, I would be over the moon if I cracked the Top 125. Another bad: -Denise McLean (A.J.'s mom) slammed Amanda in her book, "Backstreet Mom." She accused Amanda and her family of luring A.J. from his own family. She also said Amanda did not try and stop A.J.'s wild behavior, but instead stood by and watched. Denise hinted that Amanda was using A.J. for her popstar diva career. I don't believe that crap because Amanda has stated she wanted NO help from A.J. for a record deal when he offered to help... if it was true she got help from him, it didn't seem to influence how she nailed her J Records deal.

The Good: 1. Lady Christina - She dominated pop radio, and she outsold her tourmate. Her album went 3X platium and "Stripped" and "Beautiful" are both on the list of frontrunners for Grammy 2004. She established herself as an artist rather than your run-of-the-mill entertainer.
2. Justin Timberlake - Will end the year as the second or third most played in pop radio. Album was successful and critically applauded. "Justified" andn "Cry Me a River" are frontrunners for Grammy 2004.
3. 50 Cent - sold a whole bunch of records, had some hit singles, will dominate the Billboard Music Awards. Seems as though people have had enough. His year was great though, definitely the most played artist on radio and had the biggest album.
4. Beyoncé - Album did amazingly, so did her two singles. Albums came with mixed reviews, but will score her 4 or 5 Grammy nominations.
5. Tim McGraw - Still a country radio favorite, and released the best album of this his career (although that was at the end of last year). Finally looks like he might crossover with "Tiny Dancer".
The Inbetween: 1. Monica - Came out strong with "So Gone", but was unable to follow it up, and album was essentially a flop. Might score one Grammy nomination, but will fall to Aretha or the more talented Heather Headley.
2. Heather Headley - "I Wish I Wasn't" was a big hit on two formats, though the album didn't sell. She was THE new artist in her genre though, and will score multiple Grammy nominations (might even get an Best New Artist nomination if the whole genre backs her, though this is very unlikely)
3. Stacie Orrico - Two top tens on pop radio, but yet again, the album didn't sell. It's looking more and more like she's going to be one of the five names read for Best New Artist in two weeks. Fan base is growing, as apparent with radio airplay. Her next album may take her to the next level of stardom.
4. Jason Mraz - One huge single, but the album didn't sell. He's not only looking like a Best New Artist nominee, but he looks like the frontrunner to win.
5. Mya - Remaintained her mediocre success.
The Bad: 1. Madonna - Weak music produced terrible album sales and no Grammy buzz. Has been reduced to being Britney's bitch. Lets hope she can graciously ride off into the sunset.
2. Mariah Carey - Quality of her music has fallen, and so have her record sales. It's hard to belive the most successful artist of the 90's isn't even making a dent this decade.
3. Pink- "Trouble" was brilliant, and I don't know why it isn't doing better. The Parent Advisory sticker on her album isn't helping. She doesn't have the diva voice to pull off her diva attitude either.
4. Ja Rule - I knew he couldn't make a hit without a female singing the hook for him. Looks like he faded out with his girl J Lo.
5. Faith and Shania - Faith had argurably the biggest country single in 30 years and a huge crossover hit with "Breathe" she succeeded in alienating the country auidence with her pop/R&B blend of music. It was ashamed, because "Cry" was by far Faith's best vocal performance on any of her albums. Shania's album may have shipped 5 or 6 million copies, but she didn't have one crossover hit, and the album didn't do the type of numbers the other two did. Looks like the only female country artists to have crossover success were The Chicks.

Please, I highly doubt Shania had a bad year at all... bullcrap... 2003 was one of Shania's glory years, especially worldwide... and Faith just won an American Music Award... and both Shania & Faith had #1 AC singles this year...

I stand by my list. Country radio showed no interest in Faith Hill, and neither did pop. Shania had a good year if she was any other artist, but based on what she has done in the past, it was a huge step down. Pop radio didn't grab one of her songs. Besides, hitting number 1 on AC doesn't qualify someone as having a good year.

I saw this topic a few days ago but I wanted to think about the past year before I posted anything. So here is my list of the good and the bad
THE GOOD
50 Cent - No matter if you like him or not he was huge this year.
Beyonce - She had a very successful solo debut with two huge number one songs. Hopefully there won't be any backlash (ala JLO)
Christina Aguilera - She pretty much ruled pop radio ,along side Beyonce, this year with 3 consecutive top 5 hits and a very successful tour.
Daniel Bedingfield - He had two huge hits here in the US and probably one of the best UK crossovers I have heard in years. I am hoping for a grammy nomination for IYNTO
Outkast - Strong album sales , two huge top ten hits at the same time and mass critical praise all adds up to a great year.
Toby Keith - I dislike his music and him as a person but it is hard to deny his success over the past year. Topping it all off was the huge debut of his new cd "Shock N Y'all"
THE BAD
Mariah Carey >:( I thought she deserved more success this year. She had a lot of good songs on "Charmbracelet"
Jennifer Lopez - She started the year off really good with another number one but it all went downhill from there.
Pink - She is in definite trouble. Let's hope GIADJ catches on.
Justin Guarini - Justin's biggest accomplishment thus far is being the runner up on AI. His album was pretty much over looked by the public and with no promotion his career is in need of some serious medical attention.
Dixie Chicks >:( "Home" is probably one of the best country cd's in a decade. They made me a huge fan with "Travelin Solider" and "Top Of The World". But country radio is still not accepting the chicks after the infamous W comment. Even a huge tour couldn't sell there double disc live cd.

Good year Delta Goodrem (Career wise she's had the most amazing success above any other artist, even if she hasn't gone worldwide yet... it's a shame she was diagnosed with cancer at the height of it all but she'll be stronger at the other end) Christina Aguilera Justin Timberlake 50 Cent Beyonce Bad year Holly Valance (sued by her ex-manager, she claims she has little money left, and now her album has flopped in Australia and UK). Madonna Melanie C aren't these charts very fast moving? i'm just wondering because it seems like 10 weeks would like a MAX on the chart
