Just listened to Fallen by Evanescence for the first time. I love Bring Me to Life, like My Immortal, but other than those two songs I feel like the songs all sound pretty much alike. I am surprised this album was nominated for best rock album. I guess my overall opinion was that I got tired of Amy Lee's vocals. By the time I got to song 11, I was sick of her voice! What's your opinion?

Agreed! That's why I've only listened to the CD two times in full since I won it last March. I liked the three singles from it but I can only handle so much of her voice. I'm sure I could listen and like the songs individually but I just can't bring myself to listen to the entire CD in one sitting again.

I noticed also that a lot of the songs sound very similar. Still, I really like the CD, and have listened to it a lot since I got it.

You already know what my opinion is lol so I'm gonna leave this one alone.
Well, ok so I'm lying.
Fallen is a well produced record, with very good musicians. Amy Lee (who I've heard live) has an amazing voice. The way she uses it though, she might wind up losing it if she's not careful.
It's a solid album. If you listen to it as a whole and not as 11 individual works, it's a very very good album (if that makes any sense).
The best songs in my opinion are Going Under, Bring Me to Life, My Immortal, Imaginary, Hello and Whisper. With the exception of Hello, I can see all of these songs as singles 3 of which already are.
I'm not going to say Ben Moody's the best guitarist in the world, but the solos that he put into the songs really make the songs what they are.
Josh Freese's drumming is key to the 4 heavier songs that I mentioned (he did Avril's record and even Kelly Clarkson's) However, it's not their best work. As a matter of fact, I'm also surprised that Fallen not only got nominated for Best Rock Album, but for Album of the Year. I'm not gonna lie though, it's a good surprise :)
Origin is their best work. It doesn't count as an album which is why they are considered new artists, it's a demo that they gave to some record labels, but it's more of a natural record than Fallen's processed sound. It shows off Amy's voice better and it shows more talent than what Fallen had to offer. Songs I would check out from Origin: Fields of Innocence, Lies, the original My Immortal, and Even in Death.

Her voice does get annoying and the album is repetitive.

I love it, but it's not a cd for popheads.
Here's how I'd rank them: 1. BMTL 2. Going Under 3. My Immortal (just a coincidence the top 3 are all singles -- they've been the top 3 since before "GU" was released) 4. Imaginary 5. My Last Breath 6. Whisper 7. Tourniquet 8. Haunted 9. Everybody's Fool 10. Taking Over Me 11. Hello
I heard some of the songs from Origin before the album came out, and "Away From Me", "Field of Innocence", and "Anywhere" were songs that stuck out.

My friend has the CD and I'm asking it for Christmas, I really liked what I heard! One song that really stood out to me was "Touniquet."

I can see why people don't really like it that much. I'm not that blind. I've heard the repetitive thing over and over and understand why.
I just think that they made a really good debut album and have the potential to be something even better and bigger than they are right now and that's saying something.
I'd just like to say that Ben Moody is an underrated musician. He helped produce Fallen and Origin. He wrote songs like My Immortal (which I believe will be even more successful than Bring Me to Life), Imaginary, and Haunted. It's sad to see him gone because when Amy and Ben worked together, they produced something that was unstoppable. However, Ben is busy on other projects (such as Avril Lavigne and a couple of major soundtracks).
That's not to say that Amy isn't a good musician either. She writes most of the songs, she made the choir parts and conducted them on Fallen. She plays the piano at live events (because David Hodges an original member of the band quit after musical differences) and you can't say that about too many acts (there's Sarah MacLachlan, Tori Amos, and some others).
I respect both of them for their dedication to their music.
Also, lyrically it may appear that they are the same as every single third rate nu-metal band that writes about angst, but that's not true. The thing that seperates them is the ability in those angstful songs to not leave the listener depressed. For example in Going Under, throughout the song it seems as if the world is coming down on this person, but the line "I won't be broken again" while simple, makes the song better lyrically.
Again, as I said before, I can see why people don't like them, but then again, how could you not?

I agree with cfw.
Yes the album can be a bit repetitive. But I also believe its better than a lot of albums out there. And for their first major label debut, its great. The next album, I am hoping they will work on making every song unique and more distinguishable. I think they have a lot of potential.

Can she do a full concert with just her and her piano and no one else and pull it off? ;) Sorry!
I like Evanescence though, don't get me wrong. Just in limited amounts. They're like... hmm... those peanut butter chocolate things. They taste yummy but you can only eat so much before you have to run to the bathroom!

She only does a couple of songs on the piano live (My Immortal and a song called Breathe No More). She does all of the piano work on the first EP Evanescence did in '98 too, but I'll say that she does more than enough for me. I only really expected an artist like her to sing and maybe write, but she does more than that and earns my respect for that.

It is one of the two best albums of 2003.
I could contrast a few of the songs on the disc (primariliy "Bring Me To Life" with "Taking Over Me"), but I've always thought that if you really have a problem differentiating between these eleven songs then you just aren't listening very hard at all.

Amy Lee is such a beautiful girl... I bought this CD last week. I LOVE "Touniquet".. such a great song! The CD is very good, but once I'm nearing the end of the disk, I get sick of it. I'm obsessed with "Going Under" LOL!

Some questions: is Ben Moody gone for good? How will this affect the band? Is it still Evanescence without Ben Moody? Will this "break-up" affect whether they win at the Grammy's? Will the religious overtones on Fallen hurt them with Grammy voters?

As far as I know, Ben Moody is gone. Amy confirmed it in a Muchmusic interview that Terry Balsamo is the permanent replacement.
As far as Evanescence without Ben Moody? I think it is, but the masses won't. It's the Amy Lee band now because Moody was the only other public face of the group. In my personal opinion, I think Moody left because Amy just got way too much attention.
I don't think the breakup should affect whether they win or not at the Grammy's. Whether they show up at the Grammies together or not is anybody's guess.
For the final question, it is possible that Fallen can hurt them, but I will say unlikely. I say they can win 3, Best Rock Song, Hard Rock Performance and Best New Artist.

"Bring Me To Life" had absolutely almost shyed me from ever purchasing that album. It is the most overrated hit of 2003 in my opinion and I don't see what is so special about it.
Now "My Immortal" on the other hand is a single I really am enjoying. While I give BMTL an F, I'd probably give My Immortal a B+.
Hearing "My Immortal" gave me the decision of just hearing the album. However, I didn't purchase it because I also found the album bland and repetitive, and just like Trapt's self-titled album, is nothing groundbreaking but has a few worthy tracks ("My Immortal", "Tourniquet")
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

SingingSparrow, would you say that My Immortal is the best track on the album, or is it something else? I'm curious as to how you would grade the album.

SingingSparrow, would you say that My Immortal is the best track on the album, or is it something else? I'm curious as to how you would grade the album. 1: Going Under: C-2: Bring Me To Life: F3: Everybody's Fool: C+4: My Immortal: B+5: Haunted: F6: Tourniquet: A-7: Imaginary: C+8: Taking Over Me: D9: Hello: C10: My Last Breath: D11: Whisper: CSo I'd rank "Tourniquet" as my favorite, with "My Immortal" a close second. "Everybody's Fool" and "Imaginary" would be tolerable tracks to me, while the others are either bland, mediocre, or just terrible in my opinion. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

This is where my fanhood comes in lol. Whereas you think BMTL is overrated (and others), I think the strength of the album rests on that song.
I think if people liked Bring Me to Life, people would like the album because as you said, a lot of songs sound similar or the same to Bring Me to Life. I personally think BMTL isn't the best song on the album, but it is one of the best. Lyrically, I guess, the song just does it for me. Here's how I'd rate the album (obviously since I'm a fan of the band, the ratings are going to be higher.
1.Going Under A- (Good thing they got picked up by Daredevil, or else this would have been the first single for Ev. It's a good song, but of course we all know what happened to it in pop.) 2.Bring Me to Life A+ (I don't really need to talk about this song, do I ;)?) 3.Everybody's Fool C (Other than My Immortal, the most popish song on this album. I'd think this song could be a single because of the lyrical appeal to pop) 4.My Immortal A++ (best song on the album and could be their most popular song) 5.Haunted B (This is the song that personifies what the band truly sounds like according to Ben and Amy. I like the live version of the song better because it's a little bit more what's the word for it...suspenseful? darker?) 6.Tourniquet A (When I first listened to the album, this was my favorite track on the album, which eventually changed to... 7.Imaginary A+++ (Best track on the album in my opinion. The song lives up to the title) 8.Taking Over Me B- (This song is decent, I prefer the live version better because it's heavier) 9.Hello A+ (Amy wrote this song. There's a rumor as to what this song is about and if it is true, then my rating makes all the sense in the world. Depressing and yet beautiful.) 10.My Last Breath B- (Great drum solo at the end of the song by Josh Freese bumps this song up a whole letter grade. As important as Amy's voice is, had it not been for Freese at the end, it would probably be my least favorite track on the album) 11.Whisper A+ (The song I expect to be the fourth single. Heavy hitting, fast paced, rock 'em sock 'em nu-metal at its best. Love the choir part at the end and the orchestra part at the end.)
Bottom line: I know this. The album is either consistently good or consistently bad. In my case, consistently good. No song falls below a C in my opinion.
With the exception of Bring Me to Life, Evanescence is not Linkin Park with a female singer. I'm a fan of both bands and should be able to tell the difference easily.
As I said before, the band has room to improve, but with the potential they possess, improving doesn't seem impossible.
