What's going on with this trend in 2003? "Beautiful" "All I Have" "Cry Me A River" "With You" "There's Gotta Be More To Life" "Here Without You" just to name a few. Why is it so common now for the 2nd single to do better than the the 1st single? What are your opinions on this?
Here is what i think. The reason this keeps happening is because record labels always decide to go for "The radio friendly sure fire hit" for the 1st single, even though it may not be the best quality wise. What they don't realize is that Radio likes quality music, and the record labels always end up releasing those later on. 5 Years ago i would've always thought for sure that whatever single is released first off of an album, will probably most likely be the biggest hit. But this is hardly the case now.

I'd say with some cases, labels just throw out a surprising song to catch people off guard or whatever (ie. 'dirrty') and then work with something more serious as the followup and use that as the real promotion for the album. The first single is more of a "I'm back" type of song.
For new artists, like Stacie Orrico, I'd say it could be a case of the second song being from an artist whose first song was used to break them thru. The first song was a hit so people are familiar with them and will play the second song based on the first. Think of Michelle Branch here too.
Then of course there are flukes. MB20, Jessica Simpson, etc.

Well, for new artists like Michelle Branch and Stacie Orrico they throw out a song ("Stuck" and "Everywhere") with a catchy tune to get everyone introduced with the artist. Then they throw out the secret weapon, the song with substance that still can fit in with what is being played on the radio ("All You Wanted" and "More to Life").

I can see why you listed HWY, but I wouldn't count it quite yet - not till its run is over. In the case of With You, it's that the first single wasn't very good, nor was it likely to catch on. The [friendlier] second single happened to catch on. In the case of Beautiful, it's that the first single was a bit too un-friendly and radio was dying to play the follow-up.

I know MB20's Disease was rushed out to please their label. I read where the band was still finishing the album while hearing Disease on the radio. Disease was a disappointing first single. But then Unwell hit and all was well in Matchbox land. I still can't believe this song has stayed up so high on the charts for months and months. It is an amazing hit for them. But, not my favorite MB20 song.
