This is for songs that were released by two different artists but performed better on the Hot 100 when covered. CHR/Pop on R&R hasn't really been around long enough. In some cases it has, but I'd prefer to stick with the Hot 100.
I Still Believe Brenda K. Starr [1988] [#13] Mariah Carey [1999] [#04]
I'm Going Down Rose Royce [1977] [#70] Mary J. Blige [1995] [#22]
Respect Otis Redding [1965] [#35] Aretha Franklin [1967] [#01]
The Power Of Love Air Supply [1985] [#68] Celine Dion [1994] [#01]
Something He Can Feel Aretha Franklin [1976] [#28] En Vogue [1992] [#06]
Love Ballad L.T.D. [1976] [#20] George Benson [1978] [#18]
I'm Every Woman Chaka Khan [1978] [#21] Whitney Houston [1993] [#04]
I Will Always Love You Dolly Parton [1982] [#53] Whitney Houston [1992] [#01]
In some cases, the original was released but didn't make the Hot 100 at all, so I didn't include them.
I'll list those here.
Glenn Jones's "Stay" didn't chart, but Eternal took their version to #19.
The Four Tops's "I Believe In You And Me" didn't chart, but Whitney Houston's made it to #7.

Correction: Jennifer Rush originally covered The Power Of Love before Laura Branigan & Jennifer's version peaked at #57 on the Hot 100.

I know of some remakes that KILLED the original artist... but that's a whole other topic and we won't go there tonight ;)

Hmmm... looking at it again, "Power Of Love" is a really interesting case... Jennifer Rush wrote the song, but wasn't the first to chart with it in the US. And each subsequent charting went higher than the previous one:
Air Supply [1985] [#68] Jennifer Rush [1986] [#57] Laura Branigan [1988] [#26] Celine Dion [1994] [#1]

Also "Lady Marmalade" by the four hobags spent five weeks at #1 and the original by Labelle got one week at #1.

I don't know about on the Hot 100, but Angela Via's "I Don't Care" peaked at #75 on the CHR/Pop charts in 2000, while Delta Goodrem's "I Don't Care" peaked at #64 on the Australian ARIA charts in 2001.

Getting released continuously by the same artist. That's offensive. :(

Yes it is. I bet Patti was really demonstrating her notorious scream when she heard their cover.

I was going to point out Lady Marmalade but I see you've got that. I think another one would be Jimi Hendrix's cover of The Byrds All Along The Watchtower, but I can't give you specific chart positions. You might also want to check to see if the Beatles didn't outperform the Isley Brothers with their cover of Twist & Shout. I'd look it up myself, but I don't know where to get this information.

Tanaa Gardner's "Heartbeat" made the black and club charts in 1981, but not the Hot 100. Seduction took their cover to #13 in 1990.
Rose Royce's "Wishing On A Star" made the black charts in 1979, but not the Hot 100. In 1992, the Cover Girls took their cover to #9.

I heard Jaheim: "Put That Woman First" is a cover of "I Forgot To Be Your Lover." How did "I Forgot To Be Your Lover" do?

Although that does bring to mind:
I Forgot To Be Your Lover - William Bell [1969] [#45] To Be A Lover - Billy Idol [1986] [#6]
Same song, just slightly amended title.

I was thinking more along the lines of the word "hobags" being offensive!

I was thinking more along the lines of the word "hobags" being offensive! I know. ;) I'm not expecting a PM from Lil Kim, Christina, Pink, or Mya telling me that I need a warning though.
