In 1994 the best metal band ever made their debut. Yes you guessed it folks Korn released their self titled debut album. One of the best ever with such classics as "No Place To Hide" , "F**et" , & "Shoots & Ladders".
Mariah Careys "Without You" was my song of the year
"To speak without thinking is to shoot without aiming"
In late 1994, TLC came back new and improved... the once baggy-clothes-condom-wearing looking hip hop stars, debuted with their new single "Creep"... dancing in sexy silk pajamas.
One of my favorite bands, Green Day, released their debut CD, Dookie. To this day I still love listening to that album. It was also a big year for another awesome band, Pearl Jam, who replaced Dave Abbruzzese with former RHCP drummer Jack Irons. Pearl Jam released one of their best CD's in my opinion, Vitalogy, at the end of the year.
Some of my favorite tracks from '94:
- Counting Crows - "Mr. Jones" - Green Day - "Basket Case" - Boyz II Men - "I'll Make Love To You" - Soundgarden - "Black Hole Sun"
My favorite college football team was on their way to a national championship....
oops we were talking music weren't we?
Well I had lots of favorites from back then, it seems I was listening to a lot of Judybats and OMD at the time. their releases I think were 1993 though.
Aaron mentioned R&R splitting their CHR chart into two different formats but, most importantly, the figuring system dramatically changed when songs were ranked by actual number of plays (actually, there was some weird point system, which I still don't know what it was). As a result, songs began sticking around on the charts much longer - sometimes as long as 30 weeks - and lower peaking songs were included on the year end list (I believe two songs that only got as high as #27 made it - "Beautiful In My Eyes" by Joshua Kadison was one of them).
On a personal level, 1994 was one weird year. I had these unexplainable mood swings - I'd be in a great mood for no reason at all and at the slightest annoyance, I'd become very upset (I think I had a mild case of manic depression, or whatever it is). In late August, I came the closest I've ever been to committing suicide. I was down in the dumps about basically nothing at all and I actually made up my mind to go to the drug store after work, buy two packages of allergy capsules and something to chase them down with, and then go to a wooded area about a mile from my house and take them and die peacefully. Fortunately, by the time we were done, I was feeling better and I thank God every day that he helped to steer me away from that horrible decision. When 1995 rolled in, the weird mood swings, which started around mid-April, 1994, suddenly came to an end. And I haven't had them since, thank God!
Some of my favorite songs from 1994: "Crying In The Rain" by Art Garfunkel & James Taylor "I'd Do Anything" by Gerald Levert "(You're The) Only One Who Knows" by Jack Wagner "Crazy" by Aerosmith "In Your Eyes" by Dan Hill featuring Rique Franks "All For Love" by Bryan, Rod & Sting "Dreaming" by Lori Russo "The Color Of The Night" by Lauren Christy "When We Dance" by Sting
And a whole host of others. 1994 was indeed a great year in music and it takes me back to only the happy times of that year (I've learned not to associate them with the horrible times in 1994, especially August 30).
1994 was the year O.J. Simpson went in search of "the real killers", Republicans won back key seats in the Senate with Newt Gingrich becoming a household name.. "Grace Under Fire" became a TV hit, and Ric Ocassic from the Cars made a comeback.. Not as a musician but as the producer of the debut album by a new band called, Weezer..
Also in 1994, Salt N' Pepa were singing about "Whatta Man", while 20 Fingers (featuring Gillette) was singing about a "Short D.. Short Man".. Exciting Dance pop was moving the charts with Crystal Waters and Real McCoy having HUGE hits..
In the world of Alternative music, Toad the Wet Sprocket went for a "Fall Down", As mentioned above Berkeley became a hot spot with Green Day revolutionizing punk-inspired pop music, and other Gilman Club alums like Rancid starting getting played on the radio.. Veruca Salt sang about a doll named "Seether", Liz Phair was looking for a "Supernova", Soundgarden was staring at the "Black Hole Sun", and Stone Temple Pilots were showing us the many uses of "Vasoline" ..
Melissa Etheridge came out of the closet and decided to "Come to My Window", Tragedy struck as Kurt Cobain died.. Courtney Love proved that she could "Live Through This" with Hole's 2nd album.. The Smashing Pumpkins had a great year as "Disarm" broke through!! Erasure was there as "Always".. Des'ree gave us strength with "You Gotta Be".. Beck was a "Loser", Live was "Selling the Drama", and Pearl Jam was showing who was a "Better Man"..
