Every year we have a handful of artists that breakout in a big way on the radio and become staples. Last year we had
Beyonce Christina Aguilera Justin Timberlake 50 Cent Evanescence
This year I feel that the tide is changing and it has
Outkast Britney Spears Hilary Duff Jessica Simpson
in its clutches. Outkast seems to be destined to be a mainstay on the radio since they have had monster 1st singles, it has definitely opened them up to a newer audience. Britney might finally get a chance on radio this year now that Z100 and KIISFM are really starting to give her support. Her newest single is flying high on the pop chart and she has other potential hits like Shadow, Breathe On Me, and I Got That Boom Boom. Hilary Duff is doing great so far as well since she seems to be bringing back real pop to pop radio so I think the matrix will help her find a yearlong stay on the charts. Jessica Simpson is also someone that seems to be getting a second chance on radio. With "Take my Breath Away" she could earn another hit.
What do you guys think?

I agree with Outkast. With this album they have hit their peak. I don't see Jessica being a staple in 2004. She is running on pure luck and that will end. My hopes are that Britney will return to radio but i won't be surprised if she doesn't. I think Janet will have lots of airplay in 04. I don't see Hillary Duff being a huge player on radio in 04. Sometime this year everyone will relaize her music is crap!!!! Destiny's Child has a new cd coming out. They will get massive amounts of airplay so they could be a huge factor in 04. As for others I am not sure.

In trying to pick some underdogs or new artists I'd say Switchfoot have a shot, and I'd also pick Nickelback (thinking more than Someday will be a hit). This is tough though. Fuel is running strong with Falls On Me, if they pick the right singles, they could be a surprise and have a bigger hit with their second single at pop.

Hmmm, I'm not sure if Outkast can recreate the success with their next two singles that they've had now but I do agree with them anyhow. I wonder how many hits will come from their double CD. ;)
I'm tempted to choose Kelis too.
I don't see Hilary or Britney being it all year however.
Maybe Lil'Jon or some rapper....

I am not sure if OutKast will get airplay on CHR/Pop with "Prototype"... but I am pretty sure "Bowtie" will do fairly well... that track is just catchy.
As for Hilary Duff, she seems to be at the same stage as Jennifer Lopez during her "On The 6" era, so she should do fine during the first half of 2004.
As for Britney, now this will be interesting. I just have a feeling that "Breathe On Me" will be released later this year; and since it's not a typical pop song, it's gonna get dayparted... I am just interested to see what her upcoming single choices would be... They are likely to be "(I Got That) Boom Boom", "Breathe On Me" and "Everytime". Apparently, Britney performed these songs during her Asian promo tour back in December?
As for Jessica Simpson, I think that radio will finally give her a chance once again, afte her successful MTV show and single "With You".
So overall, pop music will be coming back this year.

I agree. "Prototype" will probably make the Top 50 at CHR/Pop based on "Hey Ya" alone. It really wouldn't surprise me if it made the Top 20 in the same way that "A Woman's Worth" made the Top 20 after "Fallin'" became a big hit. It should have no trouble blowing up at Urban though and Urban AC will eat it up. Kelis has atleast 2 more Urban Top 5 hits this year. 50 Cent should be back just as big as he was last year. He was getting airplay at all his core formats with songs that weren't even singles. Eminem should get a few more hits. It's really difficult to guess exactly who will be doing well at CHR/Pop. I think we're going to have a lot of new artists doing well.

I think Eminem is done, and 50 Cent is almost done. (Remember what happened to Ja Rule?)
Unfortunately, it seems that 2004 will be the year for hard rock/metal.

2004 will definitely be the year for Outkast. Expect "Bowtie" to follow-up most likely with a couple other possible hits.
Nickelback's latest album has plenty of radio-ready tracks. After "Someday" can well have a shot at finishing #1 for 2004 with "Hey Ya" being the main competitor, look for "Feelin' Way Too Damn Good" to follow up as another Top 10 smash on CHR/Pop.
Linkin Park may get not one, but two CHR/Pop hits this year. "Breaking The Habit", which will be the fourth single from "Meteora" has a shot also.
Eminem should come back strong, considering both his last two albums went eight times platinum. Interscope would be crazy not to promote him heavily again, and thus the first single should explode on the airwaves.
Hilary Duff, whose album is selling extremely well, shoud continue to grace mainstream radio through the "Metamorphosis" stage.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Eminem will get off to a good start and fizzle quickly. I think Kelis will be a staple as her album has lots of radio worthy material on it. Outkast typically has only one or 2 hits off of every album so I am not so sure they will be a staple on radio past the begining of June/end of May. I think Britney will get more radio love than she did with her last 2 albums as evidenced by the #11 showing of MATM and the currently #18 Toxic which is still gaining a whopping 1400+ spins. Alicia Keys will be on the radio for another single or two. Janet will be a staple for the first 2 singles if the first single is good. Beyonce should continue to perform well. Ruben will get some good airplay at Rhythm and Urban markets. J-Kwon, Young Gunz, & Chingy seem like they will be staples at Rhythm for at least the first half of this year. I just love Hilary Duff and Jessica Simpson. They are a breathe of fresh air to me.

I heard Andre 3000 decided (or, the fans decided) on a new single which is "Roses." I saw the lyrics, and I very much hope this is not the case!

Faith Evans should have a hit or two at least at Urban, if the release schedule pans out.
You all forgot to mention Alicia-- If I Aint Got You should be huge, 3rd and 4th singles could be, too.
Janet will definitely have a good year.
Usher I think will have 3 hit singles, probably all top 10 on the hot 100.

Usher, Janet and Destiny's Child should all do fairly well
Nelly is also returning this year, and I think he will continue his success on crossover radio.
Eminem and 50 Cent can't be discounted, either.
While I think OutKast won't fall off the face of the earth, their next singles won't come close to the longevity and huge impact of Hey Ya and TWYM.
I agree about Kelis, and I think ALOT of people are sleeping on Kanye West. He will breakout big in 2004. His debut album is due on February 10th and his new single "Two Words" features Mos Def and Freeway. Radio (urban and Rhy, at least) should eat it up. His third singe is the Lauryn Hill sampled "All Falls Down", but he couldn't get Lauryn to clear the sample, so he had Syleena Johnson record the verses instead.

Usher, Janet Jackson, Destiny's Child, Nelly, Eminem, Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears and 50 Cent.
Hmn... the rock bands might not, because their songs tend to stay on for months, and the next single might suffer recurrentitis or will simply never be released.
I expect a +2400 for Eminem in his first full week out.

Kanye West is definitely going to be huge this year.
I really hope Kelis will be. "Keep It Down" better be released.

I thought I would update this with how everyone is doing.
So far, Britney, I think, is having a better time at pop radio then Christina did. I dont think Dirrty was as big as MATM and Toxic looks to fall short of Beautiful but still be a sizable hit for her.
Jessica has a top 3 hit, which may be her one and only hit off her album
Hilary Duff is having modest success
Janet and Usher look like they are doing to have a great 2004.
