Britney Spears - Toxic
Ok - Everyone is a very generalised statement but Toxic is stirring up a lot of attention here in the UK.
It seems to have suprised people because it's a really cool song and it's good 'pop'. It really isn't cool to like Britney if you're older than about 10 but a lot of people I know can't help admitting they like this song.
Obviously the video is causing a lot of the attention but a good video can't carry a crap song.
The song is doing well in the UK airplay charts and In The Zone has started climbing the UK album charts and there has been a lot of interest forming about the album at school and with my friends.
I love the song. I think it has a real good chance of getting to number 1 here in the UK.
What do you think?

I thought everybody in the UK was talking about Clea's "Stuck In The Middle"?

This topic is a month too late, "Toxic" is just about to enter the "I am so sick of this good song" stage here in America.

Well, this pretty much confirms what I've speculated all along: that the UK has bad taste in music, even worse than Americans.

I thought everybody in the UK was talking about Clea's "Stuck In The Middle"? Please let be a joke. If you think the singles charts refelcts the UK's taste of music you are very very wrong. The singles chart is aimed at little girls who stand outside Smash Hits Poll Winners Parties with their autograph book and their mummys. Our album chart reflects the adult taste in music which is generally a good one but you will get the odd bit of trash floating around the top ten. Anyway, Toxic is a good little jingle. Why not enjoy it while its around because like someone said; we'll all be bored of this in a couple of weeks. One more point. Isn't Toxic 3 in the US charts? Because a UK number 1 is worth about 50 US number 1s so you do the sums.

Is ''Toxic'' really that big in the U.K.? Hmm, Radio 1 actually has ''Toxic'' on the A-list... so that's a bit surprising...

I think it will be a close one next week when "Toxic" is released along with the new single from veteran Kylie, "Red Blooded Woman" My prediction is that they will take the top 2 spots. And we'll just have to see who'll claim #1

And we'll just have to see who'll claim #1 That will definitely be a major chart battle. I'm not at all surprised "Toxic" is getting massive airplay in the UK; it's almost certain it would top the singles chart had its release date not been the same as Kylie's. I actually still think it will debut on top with Kylie as the runner up. For the record, I actually can't stand either song. Because a UK number 1 is worth about 50 US number 1s so you do the sums. Please explain your math.

I would think a US #1 is probably 50X harder to attain than a UK #1 simply because any song that doesn't make the Top 10 on the UK charts is considered a flop and so many more songs hit #1.

Yeah, I thought the US was tougher to break into than the other parts of the world. A lot of successful foreign acts come here and try to break threw and they fail, but American artists seem to have an easier time doing the same in places like Europe, Japan, and Australia. ??? Elaborate. I agree 100%, except, I think that the bulk of her material from her entire career is wretched, she's had very few songs that aren't awful or filler, or both.

The burnout factor on "Toxic" is amazing. I thought it was one of Britney's best singles ever until I started hearing it constantly. Now I'm burned out on it.

The reason U.K acts always flop here is because the US can't stand that kind of crappy music.

The singles chart is aimed at little girls who stand outside Smash Hits Poll Winners Parties with their autograph book and their mummys. Good! Because Clea was only #23 with "Stuck In The Middle." We need more mature-sounding songs aimed at adults like "Stuck In The Middle." Be sure to pick up their debut album "Identity Crisis" out April 2.. it's for grown-ups and not kids. That's why their music video is in black and white.. cos it's very sophisticated.

"Tipsy" by J-Kwon. That song has grown on me so much and I can't seem to get it out of my head. I also, didn't know he's only 17 years old.

Please explain your math. Ha Ha Ha! Sorry! I got muddled up! I meant a US number one is worth about 50 UK number one's. There was me trying to be all witty and sophisticated and I fall flat on my face! Sorry!!! Concerning the battle in the charts Kylie won't do that brilliantly because her song hasn't taken off that much. Britney's challenge is Peter Andre (no wonder everyone thinks we have crap taste in music). If she can beat him then she's done it I think.

The musical elitism that goes on between the UK and the US is pretty ridiculous IMO.Β And it's not one-sided by any means.Β
The fact of the matter is, sh*tty music is universal.Β Look at the UK charts, and look at the US charts; both are covered with horrible songs.Β To argue which country has the best musical taste is a moot point, because crappy songs prevail on both charts.Β Get over yourselves please.

Britney's challenge is Peter Andre (no wonder everyone thinks we have crap taste in music). If she can beat him then she's done it I think. Apparently, both Britney and Kylie are releasing their singles next week...I just checked the UK charts and Peter Andre's "Mysterious Girl" is #1! This could only happen in the UK, I'm telling you -- this song first came out almost nine years ago and this is the third time it's charting! I grew sick of it back in the '90s and don't really want to hear it again. Taking the topic of this thread into consideration, is "Mysterious Girl" also a song that everyone is talking about in the UK?!

People are talking about Mysterious Girl but it's only really number one because of publicity around I'm A Celebrity Get Me Outta Here (reality TV show) so again - THIS DOESN'T REFLECT OUR TASTE IN MUSIC!!! It just reflects that we are a country obsessed with the media.
