This has been a thought that has been going through my head, which song is bigger? "In Da Club" or "Unwell." Basically it's my favorite song of 2003 ("Unwell") up against one of my most hated (which still managed to peak in the top 20 on my personal chart for the year because of the excessive hearing of it) So which one is bigger? I can't decide, both hit it big on 3 formats. "In Da Club" went #1 on 3 formats. "Unwell" went #1 on 2 formats, but spent months at #1 on Hot AC and was the longest running song in the top 40 for 2003 and I believe it also spent the most weeks in the top 10 at Pop if I'm not mistaken, 17 weeks. So in your opinion which one do you think it the biggest and why?

I'm going with "Unwell", simply because "In Da Club" sucks eggs!

It's a tough decision, but I think "Unwell" was heard by wide array of people. So I will go with "Unwell."

In Da Club
Aside from this messageboard I don't know anyone that listens exclusively to the Rhythmic format who likes the song. I know people who listen to Hot A/C and Rock that like In Da Club.

Unwell-well I am biased To me, a larger hit is not just the one that was played more. In Da Club was something that seemed almost like...filler. I dont think it made lasting impressions on tons of people. Arg, Im not making sense. To me, meaningless songs that just got to #1 because of catchiness or whatever are not as big of hits as their numbers show.

And your personal opinion trumps all, obviously. No, not really. I was just referring to how very wrong it was for that song to have done as well as it did. (And even more wrong that the freakin' song is STILL ON AT40!)

In Da Club, was a worldwide hit song in America and in Euro! Unlike the crap song, "Unwell"Β Β

Though "Unwell" is the far superior song in quality, "In Da Club" would have to be the bigger hit.
"Unwell" indeed was a massive hit of 2003, with one of the longest Hot AC chart-topping reigns ever, a Billboard Hot 100 run at a year and counting, and an incredible #3 CHR/Pop peak.
But "In Da Club" topped a total of three formats with considerably larger audiences. CHR/Pop, Urban, and CHR/Rhythmic all making this massive. To top it all off, on CHR/Pop, the single has achieved something barely any rap singles can ever do: longevity. As it is, despite "Unwell" being released first, "In Da Club" has been garnering more recurrent airplay.
When we look five years from now, it is possible "Unwell" can then be considered the greater hit. But for now, "In Da Club" has a big edge of advantage.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Chartwise, "Unwell" was the bigger hit on Pop (the only fair format to compare them in). It racked up more inverse points in all ways, Top 50, Top 40, Top 20, Top 40 without recurrent rules (yes, I've kept count).
But despite that, I'd say "In Da Club" was the bigger hit. It was the anthem of the year. It might be the biggest rap song ever (the only other rap song that could make a case would be "Lose Yourself").
I pick "In Da Club" because I think it connected to more people. "Unwell" was probably heard more times, but "In Da Club" was the song that everyone will remember, I think.

They cannot be compared because they got played on very different formats.
On the Pop chart, In Da Club was a bigger hit.

Actually, according to my version of 2003's charts, which are pretty close to the actualy charts, "Unwell" was the bigger hit, since it came out on top while "In Da Club" ranked somewhere in the twenties. Even if I hadn't fudged around with the chartrun of "In Da Club" so it would get a low ranking, it would still have not beat "Unwell".

As much as I can't stand 50 Cent, "In Da Club" is the more popular song of the two.Β Along wth chart performance, 50 has more than triple the album sales, and the song is more widely known.

That's a good one. Unwell hit anywhere from Adult Comtemp, to Hot AC, to Top 40. That's not "widely known"? It may not be "known" on rap radio(thank god), but it reached kids who listen to Top 40, kids who were breaking OUT of listening to Top 40, which would be Hot AC and adults, who listen to Soft Rock. Today, I still hear Unwell out the a** on all of those formats! Never underestimate the power of a "legendary"(in my mind) rock band! Look what happened to U2! In Da Club may be a catchier song, but it's not the BETTER song!

I don't think we should look at chart runs. After all, In Da Club is still receiving over 400 more spins per week as of this week and it did receive more spins in 2003.

To me, when people look back on 2003, they'll see 'In Da Club', because that song pretty much defined the year or will prolly be used as a presentative song of the year (in the same way that 'Livin' La Vida Loca' will "define" 1999) whereas 'Unwell' doesn't scream "massive hit" to me, probably because it was so spread out and stuff. I think the "type" of hit 'Unwell' was was different from 'In Da Club' so that they can't really compare. 'Smooth' and 'In Da Club' for example are probably the same kind of hit and if asking which one was bigger, they would have a better discussion.
So which was bigger 'Smooth' or 'In Da Club'?

If you survey kids only, "In Da Club" will surely come on top. If you survey adults only, "Unwell" will overwhelmingly beat 50 Cent. If you take all music lovers, adults and kids alike, "Unwell" wins easily. Personally, I'm not a fan of either, but I've noticed that when songs are rated here and elsewhere, "Unwell" to my puzzlement always does well, while the results for "In Da Club" are very mixed, hated by more people than it is liked.
But I'd rank both songs behind "Bring Me To Life", and the 2 3 Doors Down Songs, "When I'm Gone" and "Here WIthout You" for top song of 2003, and probably also "Clocks", "Rock Your Body" and "Headstrong".

On the latest Billboard 100, "Unwell" is in its 52nd week. Second longest is "Why Don't You & I" at 34. I think "When I'm Gone" had a similarly long run, but "In Da Club" wasn't nearly as long. But I'm not sure. Does anybody know how long they spent? The Billboard 100 measures airplay on all formats as well as sales.

I'm not a kid (I'm 25), but I have heard 'In Da Club' all of the way through. It's a song comprised of an infectious clapping beat and nothing more then a few lines of repetitive lyrics, that you hear in any teenage club. This coming from a rapper who has been "shot 9 times"? I know nothing more about him, then that.
On the other hand, Unwell is a very thought out, planned, song, comprised of imaginative lyrics that make one think, and picture the song in there minds. It also comes from a solid rock band, that have been on the scene for 7 yrs, and a lead singer who has been married for 4 yrs, who still has many insecurities(which is what the song IS about).

In Da Club may not have spent nearly as long on The Hot 100, but the audience it had during any one of its 9 weeks at #1 is probably more than the audience total of Unwell's past month on the chart. Also, as I've already mentioned above, In Da Club continues to receive strong recurrent airplay even until today. I also just realized that In Da Club was my #100 song of 2003, while "Unwell" was my #1.

Normally, rap songs don't tend to be too successful as recurrents, but "In Da Club" seems to be a big exception; it's still getting massive recurrent airplay on pop, rhythmic, and urban formats. However, the song lost airplay on both pop and urban stations at around the same time -- this explains why it was moved to recurrent so early on the Hot 100 (ie. it fell below #50). "Unwell" lost airplay on pop stations months ago, but is now getting AC spins which explains why it's still on the Hot 100. Therefore, the number of weeks each single spent on the Hot 100 really isn't a good indicator of the song's longevity due to recurrent rules.
Taking Mediabase recurrent charts into consideration and looking at multiple formats, "In Da Club" actually has both more spins and more total audience impressions than "Unwell" at the moment. So if we take the total number of either spins or audience impressions of both tracks over the past one year, "In Da Club" will undoubtedly come on top; this isn't even mentioning the fact that "In Da Club" had plenty of sales and that "Unwell" wasn't even commercially released -- not an important point though.
I actually like both songs (not a fan of 50 Cent though), but I prefer "Unwell" by miles. Which song will be remembered more in a decade is hard to say, but I won't argue that "Unwell" has way more quality. But taking the past year into consideration, it's actually obvious that "In Da Club" has been the bigger hit.

Both songs are good, but "In Da Club" will have a more lasting impression. In ten years, you'll get more reaction from hearing "In Da Club" than "Unwell" whenever they're played as flashbacks on the radio.

In Da Club may be a catchier song, but it's not the BETTER song! We're not taking about BETTER, but BIGGER. "In Da Club" is the more popular song amongst all listeners 6 and over.
