I just recently got interested in David Gray's A New Day at Midnight album. Just a nice solid album. Nothing too catchy or melodious. Kinda a male version of a Sarah McLaughlin album. Something to listen to while reading. I'm trying to figure out who he sounds like and I'm thinking Van Morrison/Don MacLean/Boy Dylan. What do you think of him?
Anyone have any info on him? What he's like in concert? What singles he's released? How they did. Etc, etc. Thanks in advance!

On my chart he's had a few hits. 'Babylon' is still a favourite of mine that I listen to regularly and 'Please Forgive Me' is another great. A more recent single is 'Be Mine'. I think he has two albums out but there are prolly more. I'm sure he's good in concert.

I can't keep up with all the solo male pop-rock singer/songwriters that have come out lately

David Gray has been around quite a while. I think he has 5 albums or something like that. He had at least two before White Ladder if not more. He's not pop/rock really. I've heard very few uptempo songs from him. He does remind me a bit of Van Morrison in some ways, but Van Morrison is a lot better.
David Gray's earlier stuff is a little more raw, his voice is a bit more raspy, but it's pretty interesting. White Ladder is still my favorite album, but I really like the earlier ones too.
David Gray was one of Dave Matthews' favorite artists.
Babylon and Please Forgive Me are his two big hits in the United States. Babylon reached number 31 on the pop chart.
I don't listen to him as much these days, but nice mellow music for the right mood. The same mood with which I'd listen to Norah Jones.

David Gray is great. He has at least three albums before White Ladder (Flesh, Sell Sell Sell, a Century Ends... I don't remember if there are more) plus his 92-94 and 95-98 albums. As Ragin said, his only pop hit was Babylon, but he's had a few more on Hot AC (Please Forgive Me and Be Mine) and on AAA, Please Forgive Me, Sail Away (I think), The Other Side, and Be Mine were all Top 10 and Caroline was Top 30. There are a lot of great, radio-friendly songs on New Day at Midnight could have been hits had the record company known what they were doing (Real Love and Long Distance Call especially come to mind.)

David Gray is perhaps the most underrated male solo artist in the past decade.
He has a voice that is so distinct and can get your attention. In fact, David Gray's voice used to sound more angry during the "Flesh" and "Sell Sell Sell" eras. I love how he'd sing on "Who Are You", "Oh, you were singing your own song, now you're dancing...to the same drummmmmm!" :)
His voice remains one of the strongest in rock, though he has lightened up since that era.
David Gray should have had hits before the "White Ladder" era as far as I'm concerned. "Late Night Radio" should have been a big one from Sell Sell Sell, as well as "Wisdom" and "Flame Turns Blue", probably the latter being my single most favorite David Gray track.
Also, "Be Mine" was terribly and unforgivingly overlooked. It should have been the ultimate Valentines Day anthem of 2003.
Otherwise, it is understandable David Gray is left of mainstream in particular. His music may be just too poetic for Pop radio. Still David Gray is an artist that doesn't deserve to be ignored.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton
