I've always wondered how you learn to be a drummer. Are there songbooks or something specifically for drummers? Do most drummers play the exact same drums the same way each time they play the same song? Wanna learn about this. Anybody know??

Supposedly, playing the drums is the hardest thing to play. I think when reading music, there's a seperate line for every part of the drums that you have so instead of playing a C and an A note on the piano simultaneously, you'd have to hit the symbol and bass drum or something like that. I listen often to just the drum of some songs and it's weird that so many songs have such similar drum beats. I'm kinda surprised you can't sue for copying and stuff. Yet sometimes a song can have such a different and original drum section.

I've always wondered about how the drum parts get written, remembered, etc. Like when you do a cover of someone's song. Does the drummer copy the exact way that the original drummer played it. Agree about how hard it must be. I just got the MB20 DVD "Show". You can see their drummer flailing away in the background. What a workout! I have a new respect for drummers. Anyone have any songs where they just love the drums? I love the intro to Smooth and think the drums on Cold by MB20 just make the song.

Martina Sorbara's song 'This Ship' has a great drum/percussion section in it. There's a one minute percussion solo in the middle of the song. It's a jazzy type song so that could explain it. Personally, I don't think drummers and drums in music are given enough credit.

I played percussion in high school and I did the drums ocassionally. It's hard until you get the hang of it. You have to have GREAT coordination. There's different lines for the snare drum, bass drum, and hi-hat/cymbals. I was never really any good, but I could do a little bit with them. A lot of drumming is improv, too. But I agree with you when you say drummers don't get enough credit. They work their ass off back there.
Thanks, Ben
