IE, acts who had considerable chart success, came back with strong material, but still failed on the charts.
A good example that springs to mind is Wilson Phillips. 3 #1 hits, a 5xplatinum album, then they come back after a relatively short break with one of the best singles of their career (You Won't See Me Cry) and barely scraped top twenty. The album did OK to go Platinum, but it was still a poor showing.

Nelly Furtado, Hanson...Im almost afraid Brandy might fit in as well (or would she count because she had Full Moon which was considered a stumble for her?)

Def Leppard with their X album. The "Euphoria" album too. "Promises" was a minor hit yet the album did nothing.

The Cure is looking to join the fray! :(
Live also would fit on the list!

Actually, right now, MANY veterans would fit the list. There have been a number of quality albums put out by well known acts that haven't gotten the time of day.

Yeah, just look at Never Say Never and the army of hits it had...then look at the 2 lackluster singles she had for Full Moon. What About Us? went to #1 on Urban and Full Moon went top 10 on that format as well. On pop, What About Us? peaked in the upper teens and Full Moon in the low 20s. Both tracks got airplay on RHY and the latter track also got attention on Urban AC. I wouldn't call those "lackluster" singles.

Actually, right now, MANY veterans would fit the list. There have been a number of quality albums put out by well known acts that haven't gotten the time of day. Yes, very true. There are some veterans, however, that have yet to experience their downfall from the charts: *********************** matchbox twenty (Three multi-platinum efforts, seven Top-10 Pop smashes, consistent Hot AC and CHR/Pop charting ability) Incubus (Two consecutive double-platinum albums, a third pretty close in status, consistent Alternative success) Red Hot Chili Peppers (Despite the slumping "One Hot Minute", has continued to dominate Alternative radio and came back sales-wise as well with two multi-platinum releases) U2 (Continues to grace Alternative and Triple A airwaves, has achieved two major comebacks sales-wise already in their career, once with "Achtung Baby" and the other with "All That You Can't Leave Behind") ********************** Here's some veterans that have been slumping as of late, but have a large devoted fanbase and can soar again any minute: R.E.M: Though their sales have slumped since "New Adventures in Hi-Fi", not to mention their days of dominance on CHR/Pop and Alternative have come to an end, their fan-base is huge and loyal and they are capable of making a huge comeback with just one hot album. Pearl Jam: Album sales have been weak since "Vitalogy". They can only pull off one Top 10 Alternative hit an album. Still, they are a massive touring force and Eddie Vedder left quite an impression that can influence another generation.) Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Sincerely, Noah Eaton U2 is the only one I'd really consider veteran, I'm talking from back in the 80's, maybe early 90's. The Red Hot Chili Peppers really didn't hit their stride on popularity until the 90's, so while I realize they are veteran, they don't have the same "washed up" label that seems to be at the root of radio failure in the other bands' case. Even U2 isn't doing as well on radio as they have in the past.

Even U2 isn't doing as well on radio as they have in the past. By modern standards, U2 is doing excellent in recent years. They STILL managed to earn multiple Top 10 hits on Alternative from their last album, not to mention a couple more CHR/Pop charting singles. As for the "veteran" argument, I think anyone who either releases three albums or is out for at least five years is a veteran artist, to me at least. Red Hot Chili Peppers have been out for over fifteen years now, R.E.M twenty-five years, Incubus is going on a decade now. So I think matchbox twenty is probably the only band that is arguable I listed. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

There aren't many exampled of this, a veteran act + strong material usually = some success. "Full Moon" does not count, definitely not, but "Afrodisiac" may count if she doesn't get a hit. The lead single missed top 10 R&B/Urban... and let's not talk about other charts & formats, or the album sales.
No one else comes to mind.. the big acts like Mariah, Whitney, Madonna, etc. all had weak material.
Oh-- I'd say TLC. 3D was good.

I dont know how you can call a platinum, #6 debut album a flop. The GRAMMY nominated singles "Girl Talk" and "Hands Up" were TRL hits. GT peak #3, HU peak #8.. GT was also #2 for awhile on 106 & Park. :o GT was top 25 at 3 formats. Fun fact: "Damaged" won over X-Tina's expensive "Fighter" video during MTV's Video Clash! now Lenny Kravitz... there's a flop.

I tend to go by position on the Hot 100 because it's most important, it's the best indicator of actual success-- and on there, 3D did very poorly. "Girl Talk" got what, top 20 if that? And then I don't know if they even broke top 50 with the follow ups, I don't think they did.
