This song is great, one of my fave's, but in all honesty am i the only one who sees the illogicality in the lyrics?
"A traffic jam, when you're already late" -this isn't ironic! It's just...i don't know i can't explain it, but it's not irony!
"It's like ten thousands spoons when all you need is a knife" -Sorry Alanis, look up the word Irony, this doesn't apply here either
"It's like rain on your wedding day" -This one isn't nowhere near ironic at all! Rain occuring isn't a rare event, so i don't understand how having it rain on your wedding day is ironic. Now if it was raining on your wedding day in lets say...a desert, then that's ironic.
"It's like meeting the man of my dreams, and then meeting his beautiful wife" -This isn't ironic either. When you see someone at first sight, why do you expect them to not be in a relationship. This doesn't make sense at all.
Even the closest lyric that classifies as being ironic isn't even ironic!
"An old man won the lottery and then died the next day" -This is ironic but also isn't ironic because IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME
Discuss!

Technically ironic means unfortunate but the definition has evolved over time.
Everyone knows "Ironic" isn't ironic, she evn mentioned it herself.

Irony is an unfortuante thing.
Wat a brilliant song.

I remember hearing so much about the "irony" in that the song isn't ironic at all...it's true, but some of the lyrics do show some irony. Like the part about the "no-smoking sign on your cigarette break", and maybe some other parts as well...
Maybe the name of the song isn't really accurate, but what the hell, the song was awesome.

I thought she said part of the irony of the whole song is that many of the lyrics aren't ironic.

Yep, the irony of the song is that most of it isn't ironic. What's more ironic than a song that is called Ironic yet isn't about events that are ironic?

There is nothing ironic about "Ironic" except the title.
The song rather relies on unfortunate coincidences, not irony.
It's not ironic to win the lottery and die the next day. That is just misfortune and coincidental by nature.
It's not ironic to have a fly on your Chardennay. That is misfortune.
It is not ironic to want to take that flight and die in a plane crash. Just misfortune.
It is not ironic to have ten thousand spoons when all you want is a knife.
No, Alanis faulted the meaning of the word. Still, nice, original writing.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Isn't it ironic that this very topic was brought up on I Love The 90's?! Purely by coincidence though, I'm sure. -Josh

Good examples of irony:
A man wants to take a flight back home, but he fears the plane will crash. He has a really bad feeling so he does not go on the plane and will find another flight a different day. The man goes back to his hotel and sleeps. It turns out the plane did crash... on his hotel.
A man who is deeply in love wiht his fiancé gets drafted into war. During the war he loses his right leg. In fear his fiancé will not marry a man with a handicap, he has someone write her a letter stating that he died. One year later he returns to his ex-fiancé's house to try and get a look at how she is doing. As he approaches her house he hears something in the backyard. It sounds like a celbration. As he peaks over the fence he sees his ex-fiancé getting married to a man in a wheel chair.

A few examples of irony - by Alanis' standards.
A radio show you heard so much about, but never got to hear, is finally added by your local radio station. Three weeks later, it's discontinued abruptly.
Waking up with the flu, calling in sick to work, and then, a sudden blizzard causes work to be cancelled that day. That, BTW, happened to someone I used to work with. And, since she had already called in, she had to take the sick time.
Yeah, there's no irony in any of Alanis' examples - they're common, everyday bummers.

It is not ironic to want to take that flight and die in a plane crash. Just misfortune. Actually I think that's the one where she got it right. The man afraid to ride a plane dies in a plane crash. Makes sense. What's really strange about all this is that I heard the song all those times in 1996 and never thought anything of the lack of irony. Then it all just came to me very recently. The very next day, I saw the I Love The 90's take on it.

The song is very ironic.
Alanis wrote a song about irony, however none of the examples turn out to be ironic. That is very ironic; whether Alanis intended it so or not.

I thought she said part of the irony of the whole song is that many of the lyrics aren't ironic. Ugh, if she really said that's what it means, then what a horrible cop-out. That makes me hate the song so much now. Anyway, the song makes no sense and it has no point to it. Maybe that s**t happens, but that's a dumb thing to write a song about. Then it talks about life having a funny way of helping you out, which is true but has no relevance to the rest of the song. I would have given it a D+ but now it's an F[/color] because of the lame excuse.
