If you know any of these songs, can you give any info you know about the artists or song. Did any of them chart and on which one? I got this CD from the library and am curious about the various artists. Some I have never heard of. I know the songs by Coldplay, David Grey & Five for Fighting. But the rest of the songs/artists are relatively new to me. I'm curious if these songs are representative of the artist's work. Can you give me any info?? Thanks!

This was a big hit for them in Europe. The lead single from their second major-label album, The Invisible Band. Other songs from them that I really recommend are "Side," "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?," "Flowers in the Window," and "Turn." Especially "Writing To Reach You" which is one of my favorite songs of all-time. They were huge in the UK during their albums The Man Who and The Invisible Band. There was a lot of buzz surrounding them in the States to really take over here, but that never happened. I think their latest album flopped? even in the UK though.

Sing is fairly representative, if you don't like that, you may not like the band, but they have lots of different sounding songs too. Why Does It Always Rain On Me, Driftwood, and Side would be good songs to listen to, if you don't like those, you probably won't like them.

MTV2 HANDPICKED Track Listing 1. Sing - Travis 2. Life On A Chain - Pete Yorn 3. Short Skirt/Long Jacket - Cake 4. Rexall - Dave Navarro 5. Yellow - Coldplay 6. Save Me - Remy Zero 7. Sometimes - Ours 8. Idioteque (Live) - Radiohead 9. Name Of The Game - The Crystal Method 10. Sleeping Faster (US Mix Edit) - Lo Fidelity Allstars 11. Babylon - David Gray 12. New York, New York - Ryan Adams 13. Superman (It's Not Easy) - Five For Fighting 14. Screaming Infidelities (Remix) - Dashboard Confessional 15. The Life - Mystic 16. Pain - Stereomud 17. Wonderboy - Tenacioius D 18. Shinobi Vs. Dragon Ninja - Lostprophets Pete Yorn, I can't say enough good things about his music. Depressing at times for sure, but he's a good song writer, and if you like Life On a Chain you'll probably like his albums. He has two out that are both excellent in my opinion, Music For the Morning After of which Life On a Chain is from, and then Day I Forgot which has the excellent Crystal Village on it. Cake has a large body of work, but the song listed above is NOT necessarily representative of their work. They do have a lot of funky songs like that, but they have a lot of very ecclectic different stuff too. Comfort Eagle is their best album in my opinion of which that song is from, and my favorite song is the title song. Fashion Nugget is another one worth checking out that has the hit Never There. The lead singer is pretty much always monotone, they have clever lyrics and great baselines. Another song worth checking out is their cover of I Will Survive Coldplay has much better songs than Yellow in my opinion. I think their album A Rush of Blood to the Head is a classic album that has great material on it front to back, but my opinion of the album Parachutes from which Yellow comes, is much, much lower. I didn't really care for Parachutes too much. Not a big fan of Ryan Adams, and New York New York is his best in my opinion. Dashboard Confessional is a bit noisy, but they have some very good songs and are worth checking out. I actually do not own any of their albums, but I've heard 3 or 4 songs from them and I've liked all of them. Tenacious D has two good songs, Wonderboy and Tribute. That's it. If you like them as comedy, I recommend getting their DVD rather than their album. If you like the music of Wonderboy, just copy that song. Really. I don't recommend the Lost Prophets too highly, I have a couple of albums and they are in the "eh okay" range for me. I've heard of many of the other artists but don't know enough about them to comment.

Where would I have heard "Sing" by Travis? It sounds so familiar! I think that single was released over here. May have been in a show or movie too. I'm kind of thinking it was.

I love Idioteque by Radiohead....It's so odd, but it's simply an amazing song. I'll leave it at that.
I'll always remember the Cake song for the 2/3 crazy videos it had of people listening to the song and giving those weird reactions to it. LOL.

Where would I have heard "Sing" by Travis? It sounds so familiar! It was released here to Alternative but flopped completely. The video got no play here either. But I definitely heard MTV using the background music from it in for a few shows over the past couple years.

Travis is an excellent band, very big in the rest of the world. I would recommend any of their CD's, including their latest. which includes "Re-Offender". "Sing" is a great song representative of their kind of music. "Side" is probably my favorite from them, and probably their best known here.
Cake seems to vary quite a bit in the few songs I remember from them, some which I like, some which I don't. They've been around for quite awhile.
"Clocks" is my favorite Colplay song, but they've had a lot of great songs.
I like much of what I've heard from Radiohead but I don't recognize the song listed.
Most of what I've heard from David Gray is kind of boring to me. "Babylon" is his biggest and the best I've heard from him.
I've heard only one, maybe two songs from Crystal Method, and the one I remember I liked (I don't remember the title, but it's not the one you listed). It was pretty lively and cutting edge, I thought.
I'm not too impressed with what I've heard so far from Dashboard Confessional (3 songs so far, not the one listed), but they seem to have many other fans from the board.
I've heard 3 songs from Five For Fighting, and the one listed is my least favorite, but his biggest hit. He has a weird voice.
I like what I've heard so far from the Lostprophets, two or three songs, especially "Last Train Home", but I don't recognize the one you listed. If I hear another good song by them, I might buy their CD.

1. Sing - Travis A- They're pretty good. I have "The Man Who" album. 2. Life On A Chain - Pete Yorn NH but I heard his song "Untold" and it's OK. 3. Short Skirt/Long Jacket - Cake B+ You may have heard "Never There" but just didn't know it. Also their cover of "I Will Survive". 4. Rexall - Dave Navarro NH 5. Yellow - Coldplay A Love it. 6. Save Me - Remy Zero NH 7. Sometimes - Ours NH 8. Idioteque (Live) - Radiohead DR 9. Name Of The Game - The Crystal Method F = Noise. I've heard maybe 3 tracks from them and they don't have vocals. Just noise. 10. Sleeping Faster (US Mix Edit) - Lo Fidelity Allstars NH 11. Babylon - David Gray C I never liked it. I know it hit the 30s region on the Pop chart. British, I think. 12. New York, New York - Ryan Adams C because it's rather dull. He's the lead singer of some band and went solo. 13. Superman (It's Not Easy) - Five For Fighting F from overplay. 14. Screaming Infidelities (Remix) - Dashboard Confessional A for the original. Never heard of this remix. Some say they're a little whiny, but emo-punk almost always is. It's like in the job description. One of their better tracks. 15. The Life - Mystic NH but interesting title/artist name. 16. Pain - Stereomud NH 17. Wonderboy - Tenacioius D NH 18. Shinobi Vs. Dragon Ninja - Lostprophets NH

Chiming in on the Travis appreciation -- "Side" definitely was released as a single in the States, and got a fair amount of video play on VH-1. "Sing" peaked at #37 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart back in 2001. As far as albums go, The Man Who is great. I personally like The Invisible Band, too, but some feel it was a step back. 12 Memories is their most recent effort -- I absolutely love "Love Will Come Through" and "Beautiful Occupation," and "Peace the F*ck Out" is a great track, as well. Basically, Travis is a very earnest, gentle-sounding rock band, that wears its emotions on its sleeve.
The Remy Zero track "Save Me" is the theme song for the show Smallville, I believe. It peaked at #33 on the Billboard Adult Top-40, and at #27 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. I don't know much about their other work, though.
I'm a big David Gray fan...I liked "Babylon" and the whole White Ladder album, but enjoyed the introspection of A New Day at Midnight even more. "The Other Side" is a devastating song, and I also think "Last Boat to America" and "December" are standout tracks.

Save Me from Remy Zero is great, but their best song in my opinion is their song Prophecy from their Villa Elaine cd.
Travis are class. Side is their best song in my opinion.
I believe Shinobi vs. Dragon Ninja is better than any of the Start Something singles. It peaked in the mid 20s on R&R's alternative chart if I'm correct.
Pete Yorn and Ryan Adams are awe inspiring song writers.

Thanks for all your insights, guys. Appreciate the detail. I was listening to "Sing" today on my way to work. And I kept on coming back to the very beginning of it and how it sounded so familiar. Then it came to me - Maroon 5's "Sweetest Goodbye" has an intro melody almost exactly like it. I think "Sing" uses a banjo for the melody, while M5 uses a guitar. But it is a very similar melody.

The vocals are really shaky on it. Can't even listen to it is is so dreadful.
