September 1999. Here's the top 20, just for the sake of interest.
1. Vengaboys - We're Goin' to Ibiza 2. Lou Bega - Mambo No.5 3. DJ Jean - The Launch 4. Lolly - Mickey 5. Thunderbugs - Friends Forever 6. Shaft - Mucho Mambo (Sway) 7. Leftfield - Afrika Shoxx 8. Enrique Iglesias - Baliamos 9. Supergrass - Moving 10. Martine McCutcheon - I've got you 11. Geri Halliwell - Mi chico latino 12. Alice DeeJay - Better off alone 13. Moloko - Sing it back 14. Sixpence None The Richer - There She Goes 15. TLC - Unpretty 16. Lyte Funkie Ones - Summer Girls 17. Westlife - If I let you go 18. A1 - Summertime of our lives 19. Ricky Martin - Livin' la vida loca 20. Bran Van 3000 - Drinking in L.A
I like 17 of those songs. That never happens these days. Music really is getting worse and worse.

I absolutely detest the 1. Vengaboys 2. Lou Bega 11. Geri Halliwell 12. Alice DeeJay 18. A1 19. Ricky Martin. The 13. Moloko song is dumb and repetitive.
The 8. Enrique Iglesias and 17. Westlife songs aren't bad and I love 10. "I've Got You", 15. "Unpretty" and 16. "Summer Girls".
I haven't heard Lolly's Mickey but since this is the UK chart we're talking about here, it can only be one thing - a cover of Toni Basil's annoying 80s hit.
Comparing with this week's chart, I only like 2 of the 20. So surprisingly, I have to agree that the 1999 chart is better. :o
Paul Weller - Wishing On A Star - a remake? 411 - Dumb - I've heard "On My Knees" and that one wasn't horrible. Maybe this one's better...

Personally, comparing a 1999 chart with a 2004 chart (chr/pop, that is), I think 2004 may win! It hasn't been THAT bad a year! You people act as if Urban music is the devil but remember, in the 90s it was tough luck to have an Urban/Hip-Hop song go to #1 on the charts. At least now there's a good mix of genres on the chart.

Ryan, have you heard "Gravity" by Embrace yet? You might like that one if you haven't heard it yet (#7 debut on this week's UK singles chart... Chris Martin is involved in it).

Not every "urban" song is bad. I've actually come to like a small selection of them this year (basically Jay-Z and Kanye West's songs). I've also come across a UK song (Estelle's 1980) which I really liked.
The world "urban" or "rap" shouldn't be a curse word, because there's a few good songs out there - you just have to find them.
Hopefully the mainstream rap producers stop turning out crap and start making some quality music for a change. Either that or some less grating genre becomes the next "thing."

Yeah, I don't think urban-free is a good thing at all. Although I haven't checked out the UK charts in a while, they seem to generally be more balanced in almost all kinds of music. Maybe that's because they release CD singles and their charts are determined by people who actually CHOOSE to spend their money on songs of their choices as opposed to two thousand max execs at Clear Channel.

Maybe that's because they release CD singles and their charts are determined by people who actually CHOOSE to spend their money on songs of their choices as opposed to two thousand max execs at Clear Channel. They also have an airplay chart which is quite comparable to the sales chart. They just don't combine the two that's all. I used to see Westlife and Spice Girls songs debut at Sales #1 and fall off pretty quickly (they ended up with 9-10 #1s each) and assumed that only their die-hard fans were still interested in them after the first album, but the airplay charts revealed otherwise. I don't see why you need to have that random dig at Clear Channel but I bet digital sales in the US are probably comparable to the airplay charts as well. I read that "Yeah!" sold very well so it is the bona fide #1 of the year, and in fact, the other urban tracks this year are also bona fide hits regardless of what you may choose to believe about radio programming.

The UK chart really wasn't too strong on Urban singles during the late '90s. That being said, I found all the pop and techno tracks way worse than much of the R&B that is popular in the UK now.
I don't think there's a single song in that Top 20 that I like, except for maybe "Unpretty", which is also the only Urban track there, lol.

No, see there's the problem! It's not a good mix. It's a matter of taste. Looking at the R&R chart up right now for CHR/Pop, here are the songs I like.
Ashlee Simpson - Pieces Of Me Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved Avril Lavigne - My Happy Ending Black Eyed Peas - Let's Get It Started Nelly - My Place
Ryan Cabrera - On The Way Down Houston - I Like That Switchfoot - Meant To Live Finger Eleven - One Thing Linkin Park - Breaking The Habit Usher - Yeah
That's just the Top 20. I like more than half and the rest I either don't mind listening to, don't know or don't really like. I'd say that's better than this time last year.

But you stated it like a fact. I personally think most of the urban music that pop radio plays is repulsive.

8. Enrique Iglesias - Baliamos 15. TLC - Unpretty ^These are the only 2 I really like. ^These 3 I either like a little or am indifferent to. ^These 2 I can't stand. And the other 13 I haven't heard.... and since 13 is more than half of the chart, I can't really say if I think it's a good or bad chart overall.
