First single from the long-awaited fifth album from the Deftones, now officially titled Saturday Night Wrist, and with a finalized tracklisting which is as follows.
01. "Hole In The Earth" 02. "Rapture" 03. "Beware" 04. "Cherry Waves" 05. "Mein" (feat. Serj Tankian) 06. "U, U, D, D, L, R, L, R, A, B, Select, Start" 07. "Xerces" 08. "Rats! Rats! Rats!" 09. "Pink Cellphone" (feat. Annie Hardy) 10. "Combat" 11. "Kimdracula" 12. "Riviere"
You might remember track 3 as "Beware The Water", which was originally thought to be the single but instead was just a leaked track.
Apparently Paul Banks from Interpol is also on this album somewhere, and this album was produced by Aaron Sprinkle and Revolution Smile vocalist Shaun Lopez. Bob Erzin was originally producing, but they scrapped his work early on.
EDIT: Changed to the real tracklist, just for ease.

It's good to hear that the Deftones are still as beautiful, experimental, melodic, heavy, and unconcerned about mainstream-friendliness as always. I've been anticipating this release for a long while, and I'm so glad that it's almost here, and sounds like it was worth the wait.

I'm immediately impressed with this. Glad to see they chose a hard song for their first single. I'm expecting big things from it in the next few months and hope its not a Minerva chart-run repeat.

I loved this from the very first listen . It's surely one their most accessible sounding songs but still so unique and typically Deftones-sounding . I noticed it's already breaking out on AR and Alt. , but I have a feeling their career at rock radio might be in trouble as they're often unfairly lumped in with nu-metallists like LimpBizkit , CoalChamber etc. I still think there's more to their music than just that alt-metal sound , loud/soft dynamics and tough guy with a sensitive side attitude that characterize nu-metal for me. I'd even go so far as to put them in the same category as Tool (maybe A Perfect Circle would be a better match).
Anyways, this definitely deserves to go top10.

Well, of the two nu-metal groups you just mentioned, one is disbanded and the other hasn't had a "real" album since 2003. What about Korn, Mudvayne, Godsmack, Disturbed, Slipknot, Linkin Park, and Staind? That covers a wide range of sounds none of which the Deftones really easily fit with, but the point is that all of those bands still perform incredibly well at radio, as does Tool if you want to pair the Deftones with them.
No, I doubt their place on rock radio is in any danger.

All of the bands you mentioned are much more successful on Active Rock than on Alternative (Korn and Linkin Park excluded) , but in my opinion their continued success isn't due to their association with the nu-metal movement. Most of these bands have been around for so long that they've become staples at AR (just like Def Leppard , Bon Jovi and Guns N Roses were still having rock radio hits after most of the other "hair-metal" bands had faded into oblivion during 92/93). Many bands that were linked to the nu-metal "movement" have had terrible flops recently (Cold, POD , hed pe , Trapt ...) . There are some facts that me worry about the Deftones future career at rock radio . They only had one (maybe two if you count Minerva) monster hit whereas Korn , Disturbed and Godsmack had quite a few . They don't share the crossover appeal of Linkin Park and Staind .
I still hope my fears will be proven wrong . Mudvayne's success might be a good indicator.

One? I assume you're talking about Change, but what about My Own Summer and Be Quiet And Drive? Do those not count?
Plus I think Deftones has a lot of cred outside the nu-metal genre as shown by their headlining of the Taste Of Chaos tour, as well as a good number of fans inside as shown by their current run with Korn on Family Values. I don't think they have anything to worry about.

I don't consider the two songs you mentioned monster hits. Around The Fur went gold mainly because of MTV support. That was 1998 and CD sales were much higher back then.
I really hope you're right about their credibility outside the nu-metal scene, but I know many people who still associate them with this "movement".

The Deftones are so widely influential and accepted/respected beyond the new-metal genre that they'll be fine. They transcend the genre, like System of a Down, but without as many hooks, nor the quirkiness. I don't see why they'd dry up at rock radio, unless they keep killing the momentum of their albums with bone-headed second single choices, like they did three years ago.

I think Deftones will do extremely well this time out.
I just hope there's more odes to My Bloody Valentine like there was on the last album. Battle-Axe and Minerva were greatness.

Hm. This is going to take more than one listen for me. It was decent, but I wasn't overtly impressed or anything. Then again, "Change" and "Minerva" weren't immediately memorable, particularly.

This song is quite impressive. I see why this band has received so much respect and attention, especially after the nu-metal movement around 2000.
I haven't listened to much from these guys pre-"Change", but this sounds edgy but, at the same time, radio friendly enough. Can anyone enlighten a brother and care to endulge on how this compares with their older material. Many of my friends love this band, but I can honestly say I haven't heard much beyond their big singles and a couple of older ones.
I was also going to point out that it seems like smaller bands like Dredg and Apex Theory (pre-2002) and pre-2004 Lostprophets are/were trying to do. You know, take nu-metal to different heights.

Rapture is really good too. It's up on their Myspace. They've put it up periodically.

Yeah, that reminds me that the tracklisting changed. It's now like so.
01. "Hole In The Earth" 02. "Rapture" 03. "Beware" 04. "Cherry Waves" 05. "Mein" 06. "U, U, D, D, L, R, L, R, A, B, Select, Start" 07. "Xerces" 08. "Rats! Rats! Rats!" 09. "Pink Cellphone" 10. "Combat" 11. "The Earth" 12. "Riviere"
By the way, yes the track title for 6 is what you think it is. Deftones are brought to you by Konami.

06. "U, U, D, D, L, R, L, R, A, B, Select, Start"
Wasn't there a band or another song that had a name similar to that?

Yes. The Ataris on End Is Forever. They win because their utter video game geekery is forever etched in their name.

This seems a bit more immediate and radio-friendly than any of their past singles, but not to the extent where it sounds like a "sellout" song. In any case, I like this.
Some of the song titles on this album are rather eccentric to say the least, especially "Rats! Rats! Rats!" and the aforementioned "U, U, D, D..."

I think it's pretty lame for them to have a song titled after the Konami code. A) The Ataris already did it years ago, B) I think there's even a band with this name, and C) The Deftones' integrity is taken down a peg with a frivolous title like that.

C) The Deftones' integrity is taken down a peg with a frivolous title like that. Come on, don't you think you're overreacting just a little bit with this comment? I sometimes shudder at the world we live in, where an artist can build up an incredible catalogue of original, complex, genuine, and intriguing rock songs and then one little song title can give someone a cynical point of view of them from here on out. I guarantee you if Kurt Cobain marketed a song to Tide Detergent or Heinz Tomato Ketchup company, if even for a short period of time, everyone in the rock community would have labeled him a cheap sell-out, and his entire catalogue of music would have been spit on from there on out.

Look, it's not even really a song. It's an interlude. Chill guys.

I don't know how I feel about this album yet.
It's good, that's for sure, and I think "Xerces" might be one of the best songs they've ever made, but it's not White Pony like they want it to be. It's not radio-friendly, even indirectly like White Pony was. I don't know what they'll do to follow up "Hole In The Earth". Maybe "Xerces" would work, but I know a lot of songs wouldn't for one reason or another.
I actually think Chino took a lot from Team Sleep and applied it here, although songs like "Rats! Rats! Rats!" and "Rapture" are certainly a lot heavier and faster than anything Team Sleep did. But I hear the same atmosphere and progressive tendencies here. It's more pronounced than in previous Deftones albums, but again, not like White Pony.
It's hard to say whether it's better than the self-titled, since I think the self-titled was a very underrated effort and "Hexagram", "Minerva", "Deathblow", and "Battle-Axe" were all great songs. But so far I guess I like this. It's a Deftones album.
"Pink Cellphone" is way too weird for me though.

I take it back, "Kimdracula" is maybe the best song they've ever written. That has to be a single.

I like Beware. I'd heard a leaked version of it a while ago. It has a "Change..." vibe.
