Has your favorite station ever changed formats?

Yes, but before I was born Kiss 108 originally started off as a Disco station...but when disco died, so did the station...so they switched to CHR/Pop. Also, JAMN 94.5 (WJMN) used to be CHR/Pop...it used to be called WZOU or the ZOU (zoo). But i guess when Kiss became a pop, they were too much competition, and hip-hop was becoming big, so they switched from WZOU to WJMN-Rhythmic.

Same here...Z100 actually changed TO a top 40 station about a month before I was born...It's been top 40 ever since and I'm hoping it doesn't ever change...Z100 is the best...

In 1990 WTYX switched from CHR to oldies. In 1994 another CHR station, WZKX in Biloxi-Gulfport, changed to country.

In 1992 (?), the former WMMZ in Ocala switched from Top 40 to Country. And a few years ago, 101.5 in Tampa Bay flipped from Jammin' Oldies to '80s (I still like it though).

My favorite Station 99.9 in Daytona changed from Pop to Country in 2000... I loved it b/c it had an hour at 11 PM when it would only play the songs that the station has NOT added yet and got feedback to see if people liked the songs.

I remember 'em back from their I-100 days in the mid- to late '80s. They had an odd stretch in the early '90s when they switched to the Rock 40 format (anyone remember that?), then went completely in the other direction to a Top 40 Rhythmic/Crossover format, and by late 1994 to Adult Top 40. I lost track of what they were after that when I moved to Tampa.

It wasn't my favourite, but I did listen to Kiss 92.5 when it flipped from Rhythmic to 80's or whateer it is now...I had been answering phones at Kiss the previous summer for DJ X's show, haha...but I grew disgruntled with them and got annoyed that they played the same songs over and over, so when they flipped formats I was actually kinda happy
but back in the summer of 2000, Power 88.5 flipped from Dance/Rhyhmic to Country...ugh! I really liked Power 88.5, it played all the hot music, I dont know if anyone in the Toronto area remembers it
that feels like ages ago...wow
and Energy FM 95.3 (previously Energy 108...107.9 FM, and then they moved to 95.3 in late August 2001) CHR/Pop Energy FM flipped to country
I listened to all of these stations before they flipped, so now it's just 3 less stations to listen to, which sucks

One of my favorite stations was plagued by identity crisis, The former 96.7 KLIS/Palestine, TX. I first discovered this station when I was a teenager, it was a Top-40 station "Star 96". Then it flipped to country "Texas Country 96-7". So I ignored it for the better part of a decade. Then they switched to classic rock "Texas Rock 96-7". They had crummy imaging, only one decent DJ, but the playlist was good! Two years later, they were bought by Waller Broadcasting, and changed calls to KOYE, then switched to Spanish "La Nueva 96 & 7...K-Oye"

KZQZ changed from CHR/Pop to Classic Rock in 2001. Now it's something else. Country, maybe.

KKUA AM 690 was the affiliate for Countdown USA in the mid 1980's. They later simulcasted with KQMQ-FM. It was the Radio Disney affiliate until recently when Hochman Hawaii Radio took over. ----------- KLNI AM 1380 was the home of Dr. Demento and Scott Shannon's Rock N' America Top 30 Countdown for a while in the 80's. That station went silent. ----------- KWAI AM 1080 This was for a short time a top 40 station in the 80's. They sped up songs but I seemed to like it anyway. They flipped to Talk. ----------- KXPW Power 92X (CHR/Pop) Once a Scott Shannon affiliate. They had John Lander's Hit Music USA. They- like KWAI sped up songs but I liked them anyway. Today they are 92-3 KSSK. (AC) ----------- 93.1 KQMQ A CHR/Pop station with a very limited playlist. Once the Rick Dees affiliate. They also had Future Hits and On The Radio. They flipped to an 80's format. ----------- Maui's KAOI 95.1 The "Quality Rock" station. Lots of AOR. Similiar to WRHQ in Savannah that The Music Man mentioned. Today it's AC "I-FM". ----------- Maui's KMVI-FM 98.3 Late 80's? was a Hot AC. I remember just barely hearing it at Turtle Bay Hilton (They were 3,000 watts at the time). They flipped to Classic Rock around 1990 (boosted their signal) and a few years ago flipped to CHR/Rhythmic KJMD Da Jam 98.3. I love it today. ----------- KHFX 105.1 The Fox was a Classic Rock station. Today it's KINE "The Hawaiian Music Station". ----------- KGUY 107.9 Started as a Classic Rock in the late 80's. Changed calls to KGMZ and flipped to Hot AC leaning CHR/Pop Z-107.9. Later flipped to a simulcast from KAOI. Today it's Oldies 107.9.

Rumour had it that my pop station would change to rhythmic and it totally freaked me out! There's still a good chance they might change, that would suck. I would have no motivation to follow the pop charts.

In 2001, Jammin 105 [Jammin Oldies] in NYC changed to Power 105 [Urban]. I don't know what it actually sounded like, but at least according to the ratings it was Urban Adult Contemporary in between, and it must of contributed to WRKS being much less popular then than they are now. WRKS fell below a 3.0 if I remember correctly, and a 3.6 is its lowest of its last five seasons. The change to Power was in 2002.

This has happened to me a couple of times.. First there was my favorite CHR/Pop in Modesto, CA, FM 104.1 KHOP which flipped to AOR back in October of 1992...
Then I started listening to the local Alternative Station, 105.9 The Edge out of Fresno, CA which ended up going bankrupt and flipping to a AAA style of format in November of 1993 (the AAA format folded 6 months later and the station went 70's, then Classic Rock, and is now Spanish)..
Then Modesto AOR 95.1 KDJK switched to Alternative in November 1994 which was great!! But, then got bought out in April of 1996 and flipped to Active Rock..

Yeah, back when I was in NE there was this station 104.1 The Point in Lincoln. I wasn't familar with radio formats back then and I think it was something in between what are now AAA & New Alternative. It probably was Alternative back then, when Alternative was good. It was about 2 hours from where my home was but I could get it pretty well in the car & on rainy nights. Then they flipped to become Kiss 104..... ugggggggh. Lincoln already had a pop station, now they have 2, and the non-Kiss one is still so much better.

Lincoln already had a pop station, now they have 2, and the non-Kiss one is still so much better. And the non-Kiss one is doing much better in the ratings. It only gets updated every six months with an update coming soon, but it's last four ratings are bad. KFRX has gone way down but it hasn't helped KSLI. KQKQ Omaha-Council Bluffs also appears in the ratings. I liked one of the formats WNEW was last year better and I feel sorry for the people without a Country station, but I don't have a big problem with any of the format changes while I followed the ratings. I like getting another CHR-Pop station in WXPK, but it failed from a ratings standpoint.

As I was reminiscing about Hawaii radio in days gone by in my earlier post, I could have posted that in the Hawaii Radio & TV message board. They have a "Hawaii Radio Memories" forum. EvanJ, I REFUSE to post there. These boards are way better.

[glow=red,2,300]BEN'S REPLY [/glow]TO[tr]THIS TOPIC[/tr]Star 104.5 switched from Hot AC to Classic Rock as Alice 104-5 in 1999. However, Alice 104-5 became my favorite station around April 2001 when they slowly morphed back to Hot AC. In July 2002, Alice 104-5 switched to AC/Oldies as Sunny 104-5.
96.5 The Point became Hot AC in late 2002/early 2003, then switched to Rhythmic as "W*LD 96-5" Now, that's wild! W*LD will never be my favorite station!
MIX 95-7 Best mix of 80's 90's and today!

KZZP 104.7 in Phoenix has gone through a lot of changes. It was Top 40 Mainstream at least until 1991. Then they flipped to a Traditional Hot AC and changed the call letters to KVRY. In 1996, they went back to KZZP and went to Modern AC. In 1998, they slowly evolved into Top 40 Mainstream once again (they'd play one rhythmic song an hour mixed in with the more alternative-type songs). Then in 2002, they flipped to Top 40/Rhythmic.
Also in Phoenix, 95.5 KYPT was Top 40 until the spring of 1994. Now they're Smooth Jazz.

Well, this isn't an official format change, but...
When WHTG in Monmouth-Ocean became G106.3, it started at as a sort of an Alternative meets Hot AC/Triple A station (although I believe it was always listed as alternative). It would play stuff like Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, and Sarah McLachlan, as well as Alternative hits, but nothing too heavy. I wasn't crazy about this format.
However, the station started gradually evolving, moving away from the Hot AC-ish stuff and becoming more Alternative - in fact, more truly alternative than K-Rock. It was still a softer-leaning station, but moved away from stuff like John Mayer and started playing artists that were softer but also truly alternative, like Jack Johnson and Guster....artists that neither K-Rock nor WPLJ would touch. In addition, they considerably upped the amount of classic alternative (particularly '90s) they played, allowing me to hear a lot of songs that I hadn't heard on the radio in quite some time. This became my favorite station...my only gripe was that they played stuff like Good Charlotte and Simple Plan.
However, now it seems like they've reverted back to their original format, with the Hot AC-ish stuff intact (although at least they're not playing Avril this time), and have significantly cut back on the classic alternative. This wasn't a gradual change either...it just suddenly happened one weekend. They even dropped the "Your Rock Alternative" slogan that they had from the beginning (they don't seem to have one at all now). And they're playing GC and SP more than ever!! >:(
So, now my favorite station is K-Rock again.

yes Radio 104 was an alernative station and it became Power 104 a hip hop, which we didn't need, we already had one, but Clear Channel wanted our market. Now, Hartford has NO alternative stations at all. It has one "mainstream" rocker, which is independent, and plays anything from Led Zeppelin to Van Halen up to Godsmack. As long as it rocks. And on Sundays they air Patriots games. So forget rock in Hartford on a Sunday in the fall. IT sucks that Hartford doesn't have a decent alternative station.

When I was in college, the only Top 40 station in that area, KISZ 98 from Cortez, Colorado, flipped from Top 40 to Rock-Altnernative.
I lost Casey's Top 40, Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 and Joel Denver's Future Hits all in the same week. Needless to say, I was devastated.
