A cover as a lead single? Ehhhh.... Actually, it's the second single from the Darfur benefit album. "#9 Dream" was released as the lead single, which R.E.M covers. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Ok then, but Green Day just released a cover song... They also released a cover of Sonny Curtis' "I Fought The Law" as a single in 2004. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Yes, but that wasn't right after another cover song. Who do they think they are, Jessica Simpson? ;)

Okay, so does this mean they won't be releasing an album? It's just a single? I guess it's better than nothing at all.

Okay to clear up the madness, the Darfur benefit album that Scorpio mentioned is the album coming out in June, NOT a Green Day album. Green Day is one of many artists presenting covers for the album, which is called Instant Karma, and includes nothing but John Lennon covers. Other artists on the effort include U2, the Black-Eyed Peas, Christina Aguilera, The Cure, Regina Spektor, Willie Nelson, REM, Snow Patrol, the Postal Service, and Jack Johnson among others.
Green Day's new album will be out either winter 2007 or 2008 at the earliest.

Awesome! I should get that album! Is there a complete tracklisting? Apologies for not seeing this topic sooner... I did briefly look too.

You *did* mention him in your post when you were clarifying the information about the album this song was from.

This is probably a lie, and I'll tell you why. Green Day said a long time back in an interview that their next album could go one of three ways. It could be an American Idiot type album, it could be a straight punk album, or it could be something totally offbeat that they compared to The Clash's Sandanista! "on acid". This does not mean that they are writing three albums. I think that someone found the old interview and got confused by what Billie Joe meant. Either that or they're writing three albums, but I doubt they can pull that off.

Either that or they're writing three albums, but I doubt they can pull that off. Yeah, I doubt it either. You just don't hear much about triple albums EVER. If they do though, that surely explains why it will take almost four years to release them. I could see them making a double album though.

Then again, The Clash did do it. So maybe Green Day can do it.

And I guess the Early November did it, too, although they don't interest me at all.

Green Day would be more likely to follow in The Clash's footsteps though is my point.

Didn't know if that was Billie Joe or the actual John Lennon singing in the last ten seconds of the song. Guess now I know the answer.
The fact that the refrain doesn't rhyme with the rest of the song kind of takes away from its meaning. I'm not all about perfect rhyme schemes, but come on, Lennon, you were better than this! (OK, not to insult a legend...)

I'd give that dishonor to "Poprocks & Coke".
I think this is a pretty decent cover - nothing mind-blowing, but hey, it's for a good cause.
