Considering Unwell will be going recurrent this week or next, it might finally open up the stage for Bright Lights to do great things. Still, it's hard to follow up Unwell. So at this point, I'll make a late prediction and say #14. It'll definitely be between the peaks of Unwell and Disease (though that's like saying the light between green and red is yellow).

Just as I expected.
Now "Bright Lights" has a bullet exceeding +400, I can confidently see this making an appearance in the Top 10.
I believe this is their best single released in their career when it comes to wide audience appeal. This has the charm of Train and Elton John and this is going to help the album approach double platinum status.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I still can't get over this... this is now one of the greatest gainers on the chart... Top 10 seems like a given now. What a pleasant and unsuspected turn of events.

I still can't get over this... this is now one of the greatest gainers on the chart... Top 10 seems like a given now. What a pleasant and unsuspected turn of events. It is true that "Bright Lights" struggled pretty much all of September, but I am not suprised by this sudden surge. Actually, when I first purchased MTYTYA last November, I found "Bright Lights" to be the most radio-friendly track from the album ("Unwell" was second) simply because the song has a wide demogaphic appeal from regular matchbox twenty fans to older audiences as well. Elton John and Train got hits with that advantage, and this will serve well for "Bright Lights" I too am predicting a Top 10 performance for this single, likely not peaking as high as "Unwell" (#3 Peak) but will be a hit nevertheless with longevity of its own. My Prediction: #6Sincerely, Noah Eaton

When I first got the album I didn't know "Unwell" was going to be the 2nd single, I was really thinking that "Bright Lights" would be the best choice for the 2nd single because I thought it would be the biggest hit off the album, well a lot has changed since then, I'm really glad that "Unwell" did as well as it did, but I didn't think it would do that. I have very high hopes for "Bright Lights" I'm definetly going with Top 10 on this one! Another station has added the song, that makes now 116/126, I hope those last 10 add the song sometime, but there will probably still be 1-2 stations that won't add it like "Unwell" but maybe all of the stations played "Unwell" a few times.

"Bright Lights" has slowed down significantly since this topic was last active. I mean, it's not in danger of losing its bullet just yet, but it's been stuck in the same area of the chart for a couple weeks now and the bullet just isn't anything great anymore. I hope this is just a case of "Intuition" where it goes back and forth with big and small bullets before eventually making the Top 10.

This is the blandest single they've ever released (in my opinion), and I don't think it really fits the format well enough right now to deserve the top 10. I can't believe it's gotten as high as it is right now.

Because he believes that the bland songs are the ones that make top 10 on pop.

I hope this is just a case of "Intuition" where it goes back and forth with big and small bullets before eventually making the Top 10. Not exactly. Until Saturday evening, "Bright Lights" got played just over 2700 times since a week ago, but going into this morning, it has gained 100 new spins. Its bullet is not as high as when this topic was made, but the single is picking up again and its bullet can well be +300 again by mid-week. On Hot AC the single also has a +200 bullet even with "Unwell" still in the Top 5. "Bright Lights" is far from over, and can well rise as big as 23-17 by next week with many singles sliding from the Top 20. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Uh-oh...I've awoken the sleeping giant that is "Bright Lights" fans...
Lots of bland songs make the top 10, but they have to have pop appeal. For example:
"Here Without You" is 3 Doors Down's blandest single (it's not even close), but it's a sappy love ballad that not only bails out all the pop stations to allow them to say "best variety of music", but it's the type of song that pop's target demos can't get enough of.
Then you have "Where Is The Love"...bland just as well, and sappy, and trite, and pretentious...but when you have pop listeners and pretentious songs, the pop listeners are the deer, and the pretentious songs are the headlights. Throw in the most popular male singer around right now, and it's a #1 smash without question.
And of course we can't forget Jason Mraz and that song that just wrapped up 12 years in the top 10. Your typical faceless singer-songwriter with typical faceless Matrix production. Everything that women aged 12-34 are asking for right now. Another no brainer to play a song like this.
But I still have yet to see any pop appeal in "Bright Lights". It's slow, overwritten, not very catchy, and just an overall unmemorable song to me. I can easily see how people here enjoy it, but it's very strange because songs like this finding the pop success that "Bright Lights" has achieved seem to have been a thing in the past before now.

Despite liking all the above-mentioned songs, I find myself agreeing with all that.
Everyone knows what the Black Eyed Peas were after when they made Where Is The Love? and roped in Justin Timberlake for the chorus vocals.
Same goes for Jason Mraz and 3 Doors Down.
But how can you not see the pop appeal of "Bright Lights"? It's a "baby, baby" song. That alone should clue you in to its potential to score a Top 10 for matchbox 20 on the pop chart..

But how can you not see the pop appeal of "Bright Lights"? It's a "baby, baby" song. Hahaha. Ryan wins my favorite comment of the week unofficial contest. Anyway, I agree with Steve that many of the songs that Pop plays are very bland. They account for the 2nd largest category of songs, lagging only the "absolute trash" category. Although, our current chart is about 15 times better than the one we had 8 months ago or so. About "Here Without You," I don't dislike the song at all but I can't get into it one bit either because it's just plain and boring to me.

Even though I do like Here Without You (Im a teenaged girl, Im allowed to fall for sappy bland love ballads every once in awhile ) I am shocked and fully agree with "And of course we can't forget Jason Mraz and that song that just wrapped up 12 years in the top 10. Your typical faceless singer-songwriter with typical faceless Matrix production. Everything that women aged 12-34 are asking for right now. Another no brainer to play a song like this." this. It seems like most people think Jason Mraz is beyond brilliant, one of the best musicians out there, a shoe in for Grammys, etc... I think he is typical, underwhelming, and boring-I cant believe he is getting the praise he gets. But then again, I feel the same way about Michelle Branch.

I don't find "The Remedy" bland at all. The song really grew on me. However, I think its the song, and not the artist that people really like. The song is super catchy, well written, and well sung. Plus the whole "I won't worry my life away" line is kind of anthemic. The song deserves its success.
After having listening to a couple of other songs of his, I think he mayturn into a one hit wonder. He's not super talented, but just happened to stumble across a great song.

wow I think its almost unbearably boring. To me, it sounds too Matrix-y. Standard, typical, same old same old.

It seems as though I've overestimated the average pop fan once again, as sometimes that's all it takes. As for the state of the pop chart, the boring songs have always received higher marks from me than the bad songs. So yeah, I guess you could say it's better now. But on the other hand, I like neither boring nor bad songs, so to me, it doesn't seem much different now. But that's okay, because on this format is the brilliant idea to give the top songs 9,000-10,000 plays across roughly 125 stations. That's just plain too much exposure, and 99 percent of the time, I don't want any of the songs that I like having any part of that. So Pop can overplay all the garbage they want and that'll be fine by me.

Hopefully this starts losing lots of spins, really fast. MB20 is SO overrated. And the song is incredibly bland. To the above quote: I think some people on here just like to be "haters", because it's a certain band, they're destined to hate the song, reguardless if they think it's really good(in denial).

I think there are both, but unfortunately, rather than balance things out, the two groups make discussing music rather unfun. I do not get the sense that most, or any for that matter, Matchbox Twenty fans are lambs though. Each seem to have both favorites as well as singles they don't like from them.

I think no matter which band you're talking about, you always have a tendency to get defensive about that artist and offensive to other artists. It's just the way it goes, and I like seeing a blending of lamb and tiger in each fan. Though I am a huge matchbox twenty fan, I hugely disliked "Disease" and I bet many other fans did if it tanked on the CHR/pop chart. I found it to be a more aggressive spawn of "Smooth" or "Bent" and the whole Mick Jagger lyric in the song sounded cheesy to me. Other than that, I've been happy with all the singles they've released so far, particularly "Bright Lights", and I'm fine with others who have beef on the other singles of theirs I love. I'll argue, but I'll let them argue. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

When I first heard "The Remedy" around December or January, I thought it would be the sleeper hit of 2003 on hot AC but would be ignored by pop. I am rather impressed that pop radio did pick up on it. I don't think Jason will be a one-hit wonder. How "You & I Both" performs will tell how much future success he'll have on CHR/pop.

The only part that is catchy is the "baby, baby, baby" line and when tuned in to it during the middle of the song, I thought I was listening to the old Raydio song "You Can't Change That". I am somewhat puzzled in the fact that KHTS just added "Bright Lights", but never touched "Unwell". What gives?

I personally get that "let that city take you in" part stuck in my head constantly. I can see pop latching on to this song. "Beautiful" went to #1 and that was way more boring than this song. If "Beautiful" can do it after a #14 peak, Matchbox Twenty can do it after a long lasting #3 hit. Unless, of course, it slows down due to recurrentitis. I'm not saying "Bright Lights" could go to #1 (but you never know, "Here without You" did), but atleast Top 10.

I personally get that "let that city take you in" part stuck in my head constantly. That's the same part that sticks out in my head the most too. I have to say though, I didn't even like this song the first time I heard it and now I like it a lot. I still don't love it as much as I like most MB20 singles, and think there are better songs on the album, but this song is still growing on me.
