Other covers that topped the chart that haven't yet been mentioned: "Can't Help Falling In Love" "When A Man Loves A Woman" "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You" "Baby I Love Your Way/Freebird Medley (Free Baby)" (2-for-1 deal here ;) ) "MacArthur Park" "I Shot The Sheriff" "The Loco-Motion"
Other top tens that come to mind: "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" "Endless Love"

What about "Time After Time"? Was it one of the ten most popular covers?

Torn and I Shot The Sheriff were covers?? "Torn" was a cover of an album track by some barely known artist. As for "I Shot The Sheriff"... Bob Marley -> Eric Clapton

"Torn"?? Which song are you talking about...not Natalie Imbrugia I assume because that's not a cover.

Maybe count only songs that were hits previously. ;) I'm just saying this because songs written by other people could have easily been recorded before and then redone again for someone else. Kinda like with Christina Aguilera's 'I Turn To You'.

There's a remake of this that's sung in half English and half Asian.

"You Can't Hurry Love" ,"Groovy Kind Of Love", and "True Colors" by Phil Collins. (TC was a minor hit for Collins.)
"Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam (this and the original 60's version both peaked at #2 on the Hot 100)

Blue Suede Shoes I Saw Him/Her Standing There Venus Everlasting Love SH-Boom Don't Be Cruel Can't Help Falling In Love Hazy Shade of Winter Lady Marmalade Boys of Summer
Just guesses. There are many more from the late 50's early 60's as covers were far more common then.

Here is the Top 10 (or so I think)
"I Will ALways Love You "- Whitney Houston "Without You" - Mariah Carey "I'll Be There" - Mariah Carey "Can't Help Falling In Love" - UB40 "The Loco-Motion" - Grand Funk Railroad (not Kylie's version) "Lady Marmalade" - Xtina & friends "When A Man Loves A Woman" - Michael Bolton "Torn" - Natalie Imruglia (didn't know it was a remake until now) "La Bamba" - Los Lobos "If You Don't Know Me By Now" - Simply Red

Is there a way to reduce this to a top 10? Top 10 list, eh? Could be tough, but I've made an attempt. Since chart methodologies changed so much over the years, I suppose one possible way to start would be to rank the covers that topped the R&R pop chart by weeks spent at #1. This gets us down to #8. I haven't the energy to look at all of the covers that peaked at #2. Any corrections? Additions? Feel free to chime in. "Title" (Original Artist --> Cover Artist) -- Wks at #1
#1"Torn" (Ednaswap --> Natalie Imbruglia) -- 11 wks #2"Lady Marmalade" (LaBelle --> Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya, and Pink) -- 9 wks #3"I Will Always Love You" (Dolly Parton --> Whitney Houston) -- 7 wks #4"I'll Be There" (The Jackson 5 --> Mariah Carey) -- 6 wks #5"The Loco-Motion" (Little Eva --> Grand Funk Railroad (later a top 10 by Kylie Minogue)) -- 4 wks #6"MacArthur Park" (Richard Harris --> Donna Summer) -- 3 wks "Nothing Compares 2 U" (Prince --> Sinead O'Connor) -- 3 wks "When A Man Loves A Woman" (Percy Sledge --> Michael Bolton) -- 3 wks "Can't Help Falling In Love" (Elvis Presley --> UB40) -- 3 wks #7"Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band" (John Williams --> Meco) -- 2 wks "Jacob's Ladder" (Bruce Hornsby --> Huey Lewis & The News) -- 2 wks "Lean On Me" (Bill Withers --> Club Nouveau) -- 2 wks "La Bamba" (Ritchie Valens --> Los Lobos) -- 2 wks "I Think We're Alone Now" (Tommy James & The Shondells --> Tiffany) -- 2 wks "Groovy Kind Of Love" (Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders --> Phil Collins) -- 2 wks "Baby, I Love Your Way/Freebird Medley (Free Baby)" (Peter Frampton and Lynyrd Skynyrd, respectively --> Will To Power (the former, later a top 10 by Big Mountain)) -- 2 wks "If You Don't Know Me By Now" (Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes --> Simply Red) -- 2 wks "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You" (Laura Branigan --> Michael Bolton) -- 2 wks "I Swear" (John Michael Montgomery --> All-4-One) -- 2 wks #8" I Shot The Sheriff" (Bob Marley --> Eric Clapton) -- 1 wk "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" (The Beatles --> Elton John) -- 1 wk "Mony Mony" (Tommy James & The Shondells --> Billy Idol) -- 1 wk "You Keep Me Hangin' On" (The Supremes --> Kim Wilde) -- 1 wk "Killing Me Softly" (Roberta Flack --> Fugees) -- 1 wk Some honorable mentions. Here are a few that made it to the top of the Billboard chart but not R&R's. Since I only use Billboard up through 1991, the chart is pretty comparable to R&R. Thus, these were probably top 5s (or darn close). "Please Mr. Postman" (The Marvelettes --> The Carpenters) -- 1 wk "A Fifth Of Beethoven" (Beethoven --> Walter Murphy & The Big Apple Band) -- 1 wk (Yeah, I know. It's a stretch) "Venus" (Shocking Blue --> Bananarama) -- 1 wk

Well, you can take just the three-week or more #1s and you'd be at 9.

Just a small correction to Cerebro's post, "Nothing Compares 2 U" was originally performed by The Family, not Prince, although he did write and produce the song for them.
