Now that Hey Ya! is BY FAR Outkast's most successful single on the pop chart, people would think "Wow, this song has potential for top 5 or even top 2 status!" But, looking at the 50s of the pop chart on Mediabase, The Way You Move is gaining about 150 spins and may make a debut on the pop chart next week. On RHY, the opposite happened: The Way You Move vaulted to the top 10, and then Hey Ya started gaining plays, and now the former is losing spins on that chart.
So the question - do you think that Outkast could be hurting themselves by sending two singles to pop radio? By hurting, I mean hurting their chances for a big top 5 single or even #1... My thoughts are yes - I mean, in the past, while pop radio has been friendly to multiple rising songs from an artist on the chart at once (e.g., Shaggy, Ricky martin), there has always been a tradeoff, making singles fall quicker or others not pick up.
What are your thoughts?

They didn't send two singles to Pop. Stations are picking up on "The Way You Move" on their own, as far as I know.

I was hoping that they'd delay "The Way You Move" on pop so "Hey Ya" (which I like better) would live up to its full potential. I'd hate to see "The Way You Move" eat into "Hey Ya"'s gains too early.

Honestly, i don't think Outkast cares how well their singles do on Pop. They don't depend on Pop airplay, never have, and probably never will.

I don't think they care much about chart positions this time around... After all, singles are released to promote the album... so as long as their double-album sales are good, that's all that matters to them... and the record company.

Yes, but I'm sure their record company does.

Does ANYONE care how their singles do as long as the album sales are good?
I mean honestly, would an artist rather have their album at #1 or their song at #1?
And in a different light, who cares if 'Hey Ya' doesnt make it to the top if 'The Way You Move' did really well too?

I doubt the success of either single will suffer too much... all you have to do is listen to them, they sound like they're by two completely different artists (which, in effect, they are). If it was Big Boi on both singles, or Andre on both, then they might have a problem with self-competition. The fact that "The Way You Move" is almost in the pop top 50 prior to its adds date (with "Hey Ya" in the top 10 and gaining over +1000) is a good indication that they'll be fine.

Which singles was it for Ricky Martin and Shaggy? Shaggy - It Wasn't Me & Angel Ricky Martin - She's All I Ever Had & The Cup Of Life (and at that time Livin' La Vida Loca was also charting, but was descending the chart).

Yeah, I don't get this at all. Why aren't they both performing on the singles? I mean, if a single is by Outkast, I would expect contributions from both of them... not just one... oh well.

It Wasn't Me and Angel rose at the same time?? I thought It Wasn't Me charted before Angel.......
IMO, Sean Paul has sort of been the replacement for Shaggy, and there is yet to be one for Ricky Martin. Can anyone think of one for Ricky Martin?

It Wasn't Me had just peaked when Angel started flying up the chart.
IMO, it's too soon for this kind of speculation. I'd give 2 or 3 more weeks before it can be said for sure.

I think Eminem had the same problem (possibly with 3 simultaneous singles). It shouldn't be a "problem"; if they're really popular it wouldn't be a problem. I just don't understand why people call the song Outkast instead of Big Boi or Andre 3000. I mean, I understand they consolidated to make a double album, but the fact that it's a double album should make them be recognized separately.

If it was Big Boi on both singles, or Andre on both, then they might have a problem with self-competition. But on charts and when announced on radio, both tracks are by "Outkast". I think most people wouldn't differentiate between the two. After all, the albums come together. But those weren't official singles. When Sing For The Moment was released pretty soon after "Superman" was, it really hurt "Superman" and I'm still seething mad about it.

I know "Sk8er Boi" was a released what seemed too soon too. Wasn't "Complicated" at #1 when "Sk8er Boi" was quickly climbing up the charts? Maybe "Complicated" would have spent more weeks at the #1 spot.

What I meant was, the songs don't sound anything alike, so radio stations shouldn't have any problem playing them both in high rotation (although I'm sure some stations use a computer generated playlist, which would prevent two songs by the same artist from being played too close together... that might hurt them). As opposed to, say, two Eminem singles, where the voice is exactly the same and the production is similar, and you end up with artist burnout.

I love the "Hey Ya" song and video.
"I Like The Way You Move" is good, too. They're both really good songs.

I think it just depends on the individual program directors...if they consider both songs to be by Outkast it could hurt spins, but some will consider them to be different artists and play each without consideration for the other.

I believe that there were some pop stations playing the two P. Diddy tracks simultaneously for "I Need A Girl" Part One and Part Two in 2002. Both songs managed to hit the top 10. So I don't think there is going to be much of a problem with Outkast.

I actually wish that instead of "Hey Ya" and "They Way You Move" being listed as Outkast, "Hey Ya" was listead as Andre 3000 and "The Way You Move" was listed as Big Boi.
The big difference is that "Hey Ya" is a pop record and "The Way You Move" is a rap record. I think "Hey Ya" won't be denied because it's so innovative and original. I couldn't imagine the song peaking lower than number 1.
The way you move is a good Urban and Rhymtic song, but I doubt pop radio will be impressed. I say it will stop at number 18.
The format to watch for these two is Rhymtic though. Andre is going to eventually pass Big Boi on thaht format.

Because the concept of their current double-album is to have each members individually record one album on their own and then they would sell them both together.
"Hey Ya!" isn't exactly affecting "The Way You Move" on CHR/Rhythmic either. "The Way You Move" is still gaining +136, that's not bad for a song that's in the Top 10.

I wonder what singles are they (Outkast and Arista Records) going to release after "Hey Ya!" and "The Way You Move"... They were definitely having trouble deciding what would be the first singles from this double-album. I have a feeling that "She Lives In My Lap" and "Ghetto Musick" will be the next singles released from "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below"

"Angel" was released while "It Wasn't Me" was popular. "Wanksta" and "In Da Club" had big bullets on CHR-Rhythmic like the two Outkast songs do now. Nelly replaced himself at Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. I don't know if Outkast would care if it hurts one of the songs on CHR-Pop but doesn't hurt them on CHR-Rhythmic. The question is how high "Hey Ya" can get on the Billboard Hot 100 from CHR-Pop and CHR-Rhythmic airplay but not Urban. If they release three singles each, it could be the first album I've seen six songs make the Billboard Hot 100 from. They're doing well enough to maybe become the first rap artist I know of to release two greatest hits albums, if they have six hits from this album they would need two more studio albums at three singles each before another greatest hits. At the rate they release albums that would take a while. What is Outkast's career album certification and can they reach the list of artists with at least 20,000,000?

"Hey Ya!" also has Alternative airplay. Right now I don't think it has enough Alternative airplay to make a big difference. We'll see if it can get as much audience as "Lose Yourself" on Alternative.
