Does anyone have any info on this past weekend's Rick Dees show? The chart hasn't been updated on his website. Which chart positions (if any) were switched around? I'll bet Rick skipped over "Never Leave You" by Lumidee to play an "Instant Request" or something. Also, what was the Sure Shot?

Just out of curiosity, did "Never Leave You" get skipped for it's entire chart run, or did he only stop playing it in recent weeks? This trend kind of reminds me of "Ms. Jackson", another big top 15 hit that Rick wouldn't play.

This trend kind of reminds me of "Ms. Jackson", another big top 15 hit that Rick wouldn't play. Just in recent weeks, ever since it fell out of the top 20, I think. That's a similar case to the Red Hot Chili Peppers "Otherside", which was skipped every week during its decline.

That happened to "Building A Mystery" a few times as it was dropping. I'm not sure why since it was such a good song.

Actually this happens to a lot of songs. Rick just got tired of playing them I suppose. It usually happens when the artist skipped already has another song charting (and rising) so we still get to hear the artist on the countdown but in Lumidee's case, Rick probably just doesn't like her.

That is a big reason that I don't listen to his countdown anymore. I wanna hear the whole countdown with all the songs in their entirity. And Rick is an idoit.

Mariah Carey and Busta debut back at #36! LOL Lol, for some reason that song was put at #36 on the website instead of Lumidee; apparently the chart has not been updated yet for this week and the mistake was never corrected during this past week. These inaccuracies and the fact that some songs get played instead of others or do not get played at all really bring down Rick's show IMO. These past few years, though, he has improved, espcially concerning rap songs. It's a great show, and I must give Rick credit as a radio persoality, but he should just keep his chart data straight the way Casey does and people wouldn't be so quick to criticise him. Oh, and also Rick--don't use the same jokes month after month.

I think the first time that started happening on a regular basis with one song was back in 1994 with "The Sign." Rick also played "the short version" which was the last 3 or 4 seconds of the song.

Didn't "The Sign" end up being the #1 song of the year? He did play it on his year-end countdown I assume. (?)

He did play "The Sign" on his year end countdown, but it was not the top song of the year. You see, the chart that Casey Kasem used was an unpublished chart (I'm guessing maybe Mediabase or some company like it provide the chart for his "Top 100 of 1994" countdown. But Rick Dees used the chart from the R&R magazine, which was based on the CHR chart, which in 1994 was a combination of Rhythmic and Pop. That chart was discontinued as of the first of 1995. Since there were many rap songs never before heard on his show, this chart worked out to Rick's advantage, as far as eliminating 14 songs so he wouldn't have to cram 47 songs into one hour. He just edited out those rap songs, although he probably should have played "This DJ" by Warren G, since that was song 94. Anyway, the chart was figured out with a reverse point value system except for the songs that were number one on the weekly chart. Those were ranked above everything else according to total number of weeks spent at number one and, since "I'll Make Love To You" by Boyz II Men was number one for twelve weeks, it came out on top.

Wait a second... so Casey didn't use R&R for the CT40 yearend chart for 1994 but Rick did? What about the weekly charts? I'm sure Casey uses R&R for those in 94 since he did the changeover to PPW that R&R did too.

I'm sure Casey uses R&R for those in 94 since he did the changeover to PPW that R&R did too. ulij can probably correct anything I might have wrong, but the charts went kind of like this: When R&R switched over to PPW, they basically had a "pop CHR" and a "rhythmic CHR" chart. Both contributed to a "combined CHR" chart. With the PPW switchover, both Casey and Rick used the "pop" chart (which lasted until August of '94, when Rick's show was shifted 2 weeks behind the magazine, instead of 1, for whatever reason). When the year-end charts came around, R&R only published a "combined" year-end chart. This is the chart that Rick used. Casey used the unpublished "pop" year-end chart, which I would presume was the actual year-end data for the "pop" chart that was used for the weekly shows. Does that clarify things?

Yes, the unpublished chart that Casey used was compiled using the weekly CHR/Pop charts. However, the reason I mentioned Mediabase was that it looked like the chart ran from January 1 through well into December, since several songs from early in the year seemed to be ranked lower than they would have had the chart been compiled using a December through November time frame, which is what R&R does. Several songs from early in the year didn't even make the survey ("I Can See Clearly Now" comes to mind). Conversely, several songs from late in the year that wouldn't have made it had they used the Nov - Dec time frame were on the chart. The song I predicted to be #100, "You Want This" by Janet Jackson was actually higher. If I can find the charts I made, I'll post them along with the AT40 chart so you can see what I'm talking about.

I'll Make Love To You" by Boyz II Men was number one for twelve weeks, it came out on top.
So "I'll Make Love To You" was #1 for 12 weeks on Rick's show? That's amazing! Unfortunately, I missed everything on his countdown from the time that "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" hit #1 til the end of the year. I went back to college where there was no Top 40 station.
So if it was #1 for 12 weeks, doesn't that make it the most weeks at #1 ever on his chart, even more than "I Love You Always Forever"?

Nope... it was #1 for 12 weeks on R&R's combined chart, which Rick used only for his yearend chart. For his weekly shows, however, he used the same CHR/Pop chart as Casey. (Yeah, it's confusing, and I'm sure those who listened to his 1994 yearend show were probably wondering what the heck was going on.)

I think "I'll Make Love To You" spent only 4 weeks at #1 on Rick Dees... he gave some other songs that peaked at #2 on R&R around this time a few weeks on top.

Those were ranked above everything else according to total number of weeks spent at number one and, since "I'll Make Love To You" by Boyz II Men was number one for twelve weeks, it came out on top. I don't think it was at the top for 12 weeks; I thought it was something like 4 or 5. Natalie Imbruglia and Donna Lewis have the record on Rick's chart with 10 weeks. Anyway, I was wondering why the Top 94 of 94 is not on the site; does he only have archives from '95 onwards? And another thing which confuses me is Rick's chart of the Top 80 songs of the '90s. There are many songs which seem to have been left out of the chart in spite of being huge pop hits; songs like "Two Princes" and "The Sign" (the latter should have been in the Top 10 based on how much time it spent at #1.) I think "Two Princes" was the #1 song of '93 on either Rick's chart or AT40; though I've also heard from other sources that "Dreamlover" and "I Will Always Love You" were the top song that year. Weird.

Weird. Rick ranked those songs according to the number of weeks they spent at #1 on his chart. Even so, there were some glaring omissions, especially several Mariah Carey songs. I guess he didn't want to play a Mariah #1 every hal an hour, so he left some out. I think he also left out Smash Mouth's All Star which spent 5 weeks at #1 just a few weeks before his Top 80 of the 90s countdown.

This post is a reply to several posts since my last one.
"All Star" did make the countdown and Rick said it was the most recent number one song. I guess the week after it fell from the top spot was the cutoff date, which explains why songs like "Mambo No. 5" and "Genie In A Bottle" didn't appear on the countdown even though they were definitely bigger singles than some of the songs that did make it. A song that I think should have made it, due to its chart performance was "Rush Rush" by Paula Abdul. That song spent five weeks at number one. And there were several two and three-week number one songs from before the PPW era, so that can't be why it was left off the list. As for Mariah Carey songs, he shouldn't have left any of them out. If he had to play her every half an hour, so be it. "Two Princes" was the number one song of the year according to AT40, where it spent seven weeks on top. On the R&R chart, it only got as high as number two.
"End Of The Road" by Boyz II Men I think was number one for four weeks, but I can't be sure, since around that time of the year, Rick totally fudged around with the chart. BillboardBoy mentioned that he put "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" on top even though it didn't hit the top of R&R. The same goes for "Wild Night" by John Mellencamp, which Rick put on top for a pair of weeks - or was it Elton John that spent two weeks? Either way, that was three weeks that a song or two was cheated out of in respect to the time they spent on top of the R&R chart, which Rick was following but, as I said, for several months he was rearranging the Top Five. The week that Lisa Loeb's "Stay", after descending for about a month suddenly moved 5-2, I suspected that Rick wised up and decided to follow the R&R chart as it was. I was indeed totally confused with his year end chart until I got the paper and saw that the year end chart was the same one that Rick used. Apparently, he decided not to order the chart that was made for the CHR/Pop chart.

Anyway, I was wondering why the Top 94 of 94 is not on the site; does he only have archives from '95 onwards?. The top 94 isn't on the site because the site didn't exist then. Rick's web site first came online sometime in 1995. Since several might be wondering what this chart looks like, I'll take the liberty of posting it. Only problem is, I've got a small hole. Hey thanks for posting that! I'm pretty surprised with the differences between Rick's chart and Casey's Top 40 (or was that chart for AT40 with Shadoe Stevens?) But I guess the chart sources weren't all the same back then.

I've never even heard of this song before. I don't think it ever made Casey's Top 40, did it? Was it on Rick Dees' weekly survey? I haven't heard of the Heavy D song either.

The Warren G. song at #94...not only did he skip it, but he didn't even say the song title! He just said "The top 94 of 1994...here we go, 94 is Warren G., and at #93, here's Phil Collins..." So I just assumed that 94 would be "Regulate", until it showed up at #34. He pretty much skipped that one too...he did play a 10 second clip of it, and moved on. I don't know what "Regulate" was doing all the way at #34 when it didn't make CT40's year end chart at all, and Rick never played it to begin with. He also skipped the Heart and Heavy D songs at 86 and 83, also without saying the song titles. I think he also skipped Zhane at #70 and Aaliyah at #65. That's about all I remember.

So I just assumed that 94 would be "Regulate", until it showed up at #34. He pretty much skipped that one too...he did play a 10 second clip of it, and moved on. I don't know what "Regulate" was doing all the way at #34 when it didn't make CT40's year end chart at all, and Rick never played it to begin with. Yeah, I remember thinking "Regulate" was song 94 as well. The reason it got as high as 34 was, as stated above, because Rick was going by the year end chart printed in R&R, which was a combination of Rhythmic and Pop. And, since "Regulate" was a major hit on the Rhythmic chart (and a not-so-major hit at Pop - peaked at 38), that's how it got as high as it did on the combined CHR chart. Frankly, I've had it with Rick skipping over so many songs on the year end chart. Why can't he either go to a five-hour show for just two weeks out of the year, or just start fading out certain songs a little early, or edit out the second verse like Casey does on his Top 100 show? That would allow him to play more of the songs on the chart. Another thing that would help would be to quit repeating the jokes that he did on previous shows throughout the year - jokes that were never funny in the first place. After all, other countdown shows don't play all the "extras" that they do in their weekly shows (like Dick Clark's flashbacks and Casey Kasem's Long Distance Dedications). And if Rick just has to include the lame jokes in the year end show, why not skip over songs that are racing up the chart now and will be heard right after the broadcast anyway, as well as songs that were big the previous year but never charted in the current year (actually, he did omit several of those, which is cool) instead of lower peaking songs, especially those from early in the year, that you never hear on radio anymore? Oh well, at least AT40 debuted on a station within my area last year so I got to hear all the songs on the Top 100 show of 2002.

I remember during the Top 96 of '96. There was one song that Rick skipped over without even mentioning the artist or the title. I believe it was "Big Me" by the Foo Fighters. I had to call the radio station to ask them what it was. (I'm surprised it was even listed on the cue sheet if it wasn't played).
