I didnt really pay attention to the video, but I've been hearing the song more on some Toronto radio stations, particularly CHUM FM 104.5 (Hot AC), and it's the type of song that would grow on me the more I hear it.
It's a fun song...too bad it flopped on US CHR/Pop
One question about her new album, did Timbaland produce any tracks?
I know there was word of them collaborating again for this album, but that was a couple of years ago, when Nelly F. was hot off the "Get Ur Freak On" remix with Missy, the Timbaland produced "Turn Off the Lights" remix featuring Ms. Jade, and Jade's own "Ching Ching", so she was 'in' with the whole Beat Club camp.

Nelly is still hanging on to #31 with no spin gain or loss. It looks like it is almost over for "Powerless" >:(

Another example of crappy promotion I think.
I had heard the song on the radio, and didn't think much of it.
Finally, this week, VH1 and MTV start playing the video, and I'm connecting more with the song. But of course it's dying at radio already, because the video came so late.
What is up with labels not being prepared to promote their artists properly? If you're sending a single to radio, have a video ready and on its way to the channels at the same time.
This has been happening a lot lately, and its hurting perfectly good artists, because the labels are all more concerned with launching new artists.

Well if the song took as long to come to CHR-Pop and peak there as "I'm Like A Bird" did, the video would be out in time. "I'm Like A Bird" was out by August (source: chebingeo's American Top 40 site) and peaked in June. Having a video out late ("Dilemma" and "A Moment Like This") or no video ("Butterflies") didn't keep the songs from being hits. "Thong Song" got high on the Billboard Hot 100 before the video came out.

Well, videos are always good promotion. It gets the song more known, I bet many people didn't know Nelly Furtado was coming back because there was such a lack of promotion and the video came so late.

People always blame flops on lack of promotion. You can flop with an overload of promotion [ie: Mariah Carey] and you can have a huge hit with nearly no promotion [ie: Nelly & Kelly]. It's how radio friendly or appealing the song is, not how much promotion it gets.

So you dont think any outside factors (such as videos, radio tour, etc...) affect radio airplay?
I think several songs prove that they can. I understand that a video will not magically save a doomed song, but I have seen videos and other outside promotions (especially radio tours and even a good awards night) give a song a little boost.

If you ask me, Nelly and Kelly got lucky. Sure there are other examples, but they got lucky too. Nelly Furtado needed more hype if you ask me. A product will hardly ever sell itself, it needs promotion.

Sure you can! Sometimes will be able to be picked up without any promotion and others need a boost.
So do you think all songs shouldn't go for adds? Because Nelly and Linkin Park didn't but they still went to #1!

I prefer that songs do go for adds. However in the case of Nelly and Kelly, radio decided to push that instead of "Air Force Ones". In the case of Linkin Park, they had a huge alternative hit, and CHR/Pop radio thought they could have success with pushing the song at the format.

And I prefer some songs have videos.

IT does not have to be luck or promotion-every song case is different. Some songs get lucky and some have needed a boost of promotion. Some had a little of both. I think Nelly would have profited from more promotion earlier on in the song release. I mean, I havent even seen her on TV much, or doing interviews-the only way I know she even has a song is through this board

Thank you! I mean, Hershey's was huge without and advertising at all, that doesn't mean that will happen with every product.
Also, Beanie Babies' only promotion was a website, and they went huge! I wouldn't expect any other children's toy to just sell itself.

Well if there are people out there like me who didn't really connect with the song until they saw the video, then it would have been advantageous to have a video out earlier, is all I was saying.
Nelly Furtado's music is a little out there, not the kind of thing everyone can just hear on the radio and love it, but it's still good.

Just saw the video today, it's very cool.
Unfortunately... the song still sucks, it is really a pile of crap. I am surprise someone who had 3 fantastic singles before has released such a bad song... THAT is why it's flopping IMO, it just is NOT appealing to most people, even those that like Nelly like me.

Not for anything, but I think I've reacted to this song better than 'I'm Like A Bird' and for that matter her other singles.
It's not going to be as successful, but if it grows on me more, it'll definitely be my favorite single of hers.

I've heard this song enough to know it's pretty good. Unfortunately, I have to admit it's the least best of her five singles (I'm counting "Hey Man") And it's not really inspiring me to buy the album. I thought Whoa Nelly was great though.
And I thought Nelly and Kelly were so successful simply because it was Nelly and Kelly Rowland singing a song together plus it was on the heels of "Hot In Herre".

My point was that it wasn't even a planned single. They were going to release "Air Force Ones" but stations played "Dilemma" right into the Top 50 and they just let radio keep on, and they eventually took the song to #1. The video didn't even come out until after it hit #1.

What has "Powerless" done on the Canadian charts?

Around no. 11, and I don't expect it to keep climbimg, but who knows.
I can't believe this is the lead-off single, not that I've heard the rest. Nelly F was never really about being radio friendly or mainstream, but this is sure to cement her as a one-album wonder.

Nelly Furtado seems EXACTLY like a typical one album wonder to me. She put out an album that got surprise success and then she decides to go totally artistic. It's no wonder she's flopping. You have to realize that success and quality don't go hand in hand. You either get one or the other... for the most part.

it is really a pile of crap. lol It probably won't make my personal top 10, but I do somewhat like it. It has nothing on her first album, though. Even though "On The Radio" flopped on my chart, it only flopped because I had already played the song 100x before it was released here.

I think Nelly Furtado is the new Paula Cole!
Breakthough album that sells a lot over a period of time, but never really sells a lot in any particular week (no Top 10 peak).... with 2 big radio hits followed by a minor radio hit. Wins a Grammy.
Then comes out with a new album, that everyone would expect to be huge, a few years later to good reviews but fails to get a hit! And hence, fails to sell albums... and becomes a 1 album wonder.

I happen to think "Powerless" is quality. I don't care what rebirth, radio or anybody thinks. This song gives me chills. I think it's fantastic. oh i heard a remix on hot 89.9, it sucked nobody puts any thought in remixes these days. they just use the same vocals, remove the music and add a simple hip-hop or dance beat.

I'm dissapointed the song isn't doing well at Pop...But at least Hot AC is supporting it.

We can't really say Nelly Furtado will now be forever hitless, she has not peaked on Hot AC yet.

well, the thing about "Powerless" it's far too different from her last album, and even too far from what she was featured on... The song is pretty good (anyways, i think so) but it's miles beside everything else currently on the pop chart... you can't expect a huge success with that
