Top 40s of anybody on the chart according to the archive site, unless there's somebody who I passed by on the chart without checking. 1. Britney Spears: 13 1. Sheryl Crow: 13 (I'm including "The First Cut Is The Deepest" which is now in the Mediabase Top 40, but I don't know if it was there for the final update) 3. Christina Aguilera: 11 3. Pink: 11 3. Matchbox Twenty: 11 (12 for Rob Thomas) 3. Beyonce: 11 if you include 8 from Destiny's Child (I'm including "Me, Myself, & I" which is now in the Mediabase Top 40, but I don't know if it was there for the final update) 7. No Doubt: 10 7. Santana: 10 9. Enrique Iglesias: 9 10. Nelly: 8 I included all collaborations.

Bear in mind that the archive site is still incomplete for chart data prior to July 1983. So acts that started their chart careers in the 70s may not be, completely, accounted for at present.
EDIT: Never mind. Misread your post. You're talking about artists who are "currently" on the chart. My bad.

He'd be the only artist possibly affected by the incomplete archive, as no other 70's artists are currently charting. Hard to believe Britney's now had as many top 40 hits as Sheryl Crow now!

It's really not that hard to believe. As much as I can't stand Britney, she sells lots of albums. Tons. That's at least one factor that affects airplay, so pretty much every release of hers goes at least top 40. Try comparing top 10s though. ;)

I didn't include Beyonce. Then she'd have: Say My Name Jumpin Jumpin Independent Women Part 1 Survivor Bootylicious Emotion '03 Bonnie & Clyde (if it includes featured appearances) Crazy In Love Baby Boy So that's 9, including Destiny's Child, and her featured appearance with Jay-Z.

I would not have guessed that, I guess I should have included her then.

Of course, if you are including featured performances, then Madonna is currently on the chart and you'd have to include her.

Britney Spears only has five top ten hits??
...Baby One More Time Sometimes (You Drive Me) Crazy Oops! I Did It Again Lucky
Well, those are the only five I can remember right now, but I could have sworn she had more. You mean she hasn't hit the Top Ten since the fall of 2000?

It is indeed bizarre beyond reason that the biggest selling act of the last 5 years (someone who stands at the centre of pop music) should have seen such limited ariplay at CHR/Pop radio. It truely is a paradox.

Britney has been the most successful pop act of the last five years, except for maybe BSB and N Sync. Chart position is just one factor in deciding how successful an artist is. Album sales, q rating, and ticket sales are more important factors.
I'd say she ranks in the Top 6 of all formats over the last five years along with the two boy bands, Shania, Creed, and Dave Matthews Band.

You guys forgot to include J.lo! She has 9 top ten hits as well.
is Christina Aguilera the #1 artist of this era? I remember someone on the old message board, i think it was Bry that said the top artist of this era was Pink, and MB20, Christina, and J.lo right behind. Well i would like to know, now that Pink and J.lo have had a string of flops, and Christina has had a string of more hits, does this put Christina in first place?

We were comparing acts that are currently in the top40. I think for the reason someone mentioned above we can't say Christina is #1. It is more than just hits on pop radio, it is touring, album sales, the whole bit. I don't think you can really argue that Britney isn't #1 based on all the factors.

I'd say Santana might not own the record either. Didn't Casey say that 'Smooth' was hit 9th Top 40 hit or 11th or something?

Didn't Casey say that 'Smooth' was hit 9th Top 40 hit or 11th or something? Probably... on the Hot 100, "Smooth" was Santana's 11th top 40 hit. That'd make "Why Don't You And I" the 14th top 40 for Santana (R&R history may differ, though).

Well, you'd have to do this with almost every artist probably, but "Me Against the Music" DID enter the top ten, but fell out right before the official chart update. That could count as six top ten hits.
Thanks, Ben

I would say it counts for Mediabase but not for R&R! ;)

Uhh, ok.. and that's supposed to mean..? I was just asking a question Why the heck would you say "quality"? Most of your favorite acts would equally be good examples of that as well...

Did I mention any names in regards to the quality comment? I was just wondering if quality was also being factored into that, simple as that.
My favorite artists have nothing to with anything.. not that you would know anything about who they are or why.

I wasn't talking about the #1 artist overall, i mean is Christina the #1 artist when it comes to Pop Airplay.

I suppose anyone can have the label of #1 artist if you apply it to different criteria.
I would say, unfortunately, probably Justin Timberlake as being the #1 artist of airplay in 2003..... Ugh!

Would quality be factored in there anywhere? Unfortunately, no. I mean if quality was factored in very few of the CHR/pop acts would even be considered. It's a matter of popularity (pop) and in that regard it is hard to argue against Britney's popularity. I can't stand her anymore on any level, and I never really liked her music that much, but I am not the target demographic either.

Would quality be factored in there anywhere? Quality is purely subjective. I think there is no quality whatsoever in the Strokes' music, yet music critics can't get enough of these guys. They cannot sing, nor play instruments well. Back to the point, you can't judge success on quality. Just objective numbers such as ticket and album sales and airplay, and nonbiased polls.

Back to the point, you can't judge success on quality. Just objective numbers such as ticket and album sales and airplay, and nonbiased polls. This is yet another measure of popularity, critical success. As you correctly point out, critical success is not an accurate measure of quality either. What is quality anyway? Different things are pleasing to different people. To some a particular percussion sound is pleasing and so they like any song with that particular sound, to others it is melody, to some it is harmony, to others a combination. Perfect pitch may be pleasing to many, but some are pleased with out of key offerings as well. A poorly sung and played song can still resonate with someone in such a way that they think it is a quality song, and a perfect song can still be displeasing to one person's ears. That's why quality can not be a factor in popularity.
