With x-tina's 5th release on the verge of becoming her fourth top 10 from Stripped :o, I was wondering how many other albums out there had had such successful releases after an initial disappointmet like Dirrty. It's probably much more common for new artists, not anticpated CD's.

Sheryl Crow's Tuesday Night Music Club.
Also Celine Dion's Let's Talk About Love, I think. Wasn't "Tell Him" the first single? OK wait never mind. She didn't have a string of hits from it anyway.

Paula Abdul "Forever Your Girl". "Knocked Out" bombed which was followed by five top 10's.
Def Leppard "Hysteria". The first single "Women" bombed, followed by six Top 20's.
Matchbox Twenty's first album had four top tens after "Long Day" bombed. Their new album shouldn't count as two hits doesn't represent a "string of hits"

Matchbox Twenty's first album had four top tens after "Long Day" bombed. Their new album shouldn't count as two hits doesn't represent a "string of hits" I don't think "Long Day" was ever released to pop. So whether it, officially, bombed is debatable. Dave Matthews Band seem to have made a career of failed first singles. - "Too Much" didn't chart, "So Much To Say" and "Crash Into Me" became modest hits. - " Don't Drink The Water" didn't chart, "Stay (Wasting Time)" and "Crush" did. - "I Did It" was overlooked, "The Space Between" and "Everyday" weren't. But, again, two hits doesn't really constitute a "string".

On Country, the first single was pulled and then Lonestar had many hits starting with "Amazed." From "...And Then There Was X" by DMX, the second and third singles did better on the Billboard Hot 100 than the first single. The same goes for another album released near the same time, "Unleash The Dragon" by Sisqo. Jimmy Eat World had two big Alternative hits after the first single, "Bleed American." Although the flop wasn't put on her album, Beyonce had "Work It Out" and then three hits. Some albums where the peak position got better from the first single to the second single to the third single were "Toxicity" by System Of A Down on Alternative and "Tragic Kingdom" by No Doubt, "Justified" by Justin Timberlake, and "Jagged Little Pill" by Alanis Morissette on CHR-Pop, although the first three/only three singles were all Top 10s in the three of those examples. From "Sweet Kisses" by Jessica Simpson, the first and second singles peaked in the same area and the third single did much better. From another album released in 1999 by an artist who worked with Jessica Simpson, "The Writing's On The Wall" by Destiny's Child, the third and fourth singles did better than the first two singles. Looking at the archive site, Taylor Dayne's four singles from her first album and progressively better peak positions but like in other examples I gave, all were Top 10s, and Taylor's singles did not have progressively better weeks on chart.

Didn't Simple Plan release a single that completely tanked before "I'd Do Anything"? Or maybe it wasn't released to pop in the US... ???

You're probably thinking of "I'm Just A Kid". A few pop and alternative stations played it some, including one of the ones here, but I think it was never officially released.

Would Nickelback's "Silver Side Up" count as one of these?

I see you finally married and changed your last name. You shoulda kept your name and been Mega248249. Anyways, I think 'I'm Just A Kid' mighta been released in Canada. My station played it and they only play released singles... well, except for that odd case where they played 'Front Row' by Alanis... and 'Drowning' by Hootie & The Blowfish... but they were huge at the time! Simple Plan was new! ;)

this actually happens quite a bit...
Donell Jones crapped out with "Shorty (Got Her Eyes On Me)" but then hit it big with "U Know What's Up" and then "Where I Wanna Be".
in a way... Monica did it with "All Eyez On Me" flopping and then hitting jackpot with "So Gone".
i had more examples but my mind's crapped out

And what string of hits did the album have? Well on Active Rock and Rock but not CHR-Pop.

*Shrug* This is a pop forum. Yes, but the event we're looking for could happen on any chart. Would you rather there be a topic for this in every format forum or all in here?

U2's "The Fly" was the first single off of Achtung Baby and it didn't hit the top 40. The next song, "Mysterious Ways", became one of their biggest hits, followed by "One", "Even Better Than the Real Thing" and "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses".

Apparantly, if someone starts a topic on a song in Rock/Alternative and then it crosses over to CHR/Pop and Hot AC, starting new topics on that same song in those forums is not allowed and you'll be led back to the original Alternative-based topic so I'm assuming it's the same with other topics as well. *shrug*

Fuel. There was a release before "Hemmorage" and "Bad Day." Really? I thought "Hemorrhage" was the first single. (BTW, "Innocent" came between "H(IMH) " and "BD".) What was the first release then?

Paula Abdul "Forever Your Girl". "Knocked Out" bombed which was followed by five top 10's. Knocked Out and The Way That You Love Me were the first two singles and bombed. :) The re-release of The Way That You Love Me did much better later on.
